That's because Sony pulls all sorts of shenanigans with their numbers.

For example, they write off 'repaired' units as being 'units sold.' There's a very good reason why these hardware sales don't reflect in the software sales at all. DS and Wii had several titles that sold tens of millions of units. PS2 only had GTA and Gran Turismo.

I think we need to address that Playstation really only appeals to one specific niche. Niggers. Niggers will buy Playstations just to play GTA and Gran Turismo.

Meanwhile, Nintendo consoles have widely successful games that appeal to different audiences. Take Style Savvy... the fanbase for that are not generally speaking, interested in Xenoblade. Nintendogs exists. Titles like Breath of the Wild, Arms, Mario Odyssey, Metroid, all appeal to completely different people.

It's the same concept as a hypothetical situation in which Donald Trump received 50 million votes and Teddy Roosevelt received 50 million votes -- the US population was 324 million for Trump's election and 83 million during Roosevelt's time. That means Roosevelt was more impressive, because the total US population wasn't the same at both points.

Eyeballing the chart at the 12 quarter mark, PS4 looks to be about 180% the value of the PS3. If the gaming audience is more than 1.8 times the size between 2009 and 2017, the PS4 is actually underperforming in the market.

All I own in the current gen is a PC and PS4, so don't even type what you're about to type

Raw numbers don't matter shit when the gaming audience is at different sizes at different points in time. Selling 10 million consoles in 1994 would easily be 40%+ market share yet doing the same in 2017 would be a sub-Dreamcast tier flop.

It's the best selling console of all time, including handhelds.
Not even Nintendo with their pandering (and perfect timing) to attract the modern phone "gamer" managed to sell enough with the DS (whose playerbase is currently a ghost, much like the Wii. Both of those consoles touched a market that wasn't interested in gaming and will never come back).

Of course PS2 clearly got some of that beyond-casual market but it still mostly had casual and core gamers in mind, which remained in vidya for the next generation, unlike Nintendo that went form a 100m+ seller (Wii) to a 13m seller (WiiU). Altough a lot of people who had a PS2 got a 360 afterwards instead of a PS3 due to its launch disaster, much like what happened now with 360-to-PS4 users.
