This is typical Nintendo. Brawl is a prime example. Nintendo feels the need to level the playing field so "everyone has fun" but that inadvertently means hindering players that are really good at the game.
Mario Kart does this through items.
Smash Bros. does this through items (and tripping for Brawl)
Mario Party does this through random chance favoring others losing.

This is why their multiplayer games are shit and their singleplayer games are more favorable. However, Nintendo has at least acknowledged the competitive scene lately and has given them some options (no items) and Splatoon is somewhat balanced. Arms is shit though

The item fix for spinning boxes and lower placed racers were necessary. Lost so many races because I pick up an item box trying to get something to protect myself only for the box to spin for 20 seconds. Of course 2nd and 3rd place have triple red shells so I end up in 6th behind this. They still need to fix 1st place only getting coins. Gimme green shells at least.

Well, it probably serves to make the game more balanced actually, since right now it's much easier to stay in the lead if you happen to get it than trying to survive while in the pack, because when you're in first place you will never get hit by a barrage of items the same way the guy in 6th will.

Mario Kart through the start had always done this, and some of the games let you have the option to turn off the items for certain functions.

Smash has always had the option in every game to turn off items and random tripping was removed in Smash 4 for both versions.

Mario Party was always suppose to be a clusterfuck of bullshit since the first game that you were never suppose to take seriously and laugh it off for better or worse.

Nintendo makes games specifically for all-ages, that are meant to have a skill floor that isn't too far from the skill ceiling, with ways for anyone to have fun playing them. They aren't competitive games.

With the Air Horn item, it's safer and easier to be in the lead than ever before. Being in the lead doesn't necessarily equal skill to a certain degree in Mario Kart 8, it most likely just means you were lucky enough to get ahead without getting hit too much after the first few rows of item boxes.
