The insta shield wasnt good enough. In sonic 3/k, tails was special because he could fly, and knuckles was special because he could glide and climb walls. what could sonic do? oh yeah, he could shield himself, or something. but only when he is jumping, where he (and the other characters) is basically already invulnerable anyways.

This is something every character can do after hitting jump while in the air. Sonic 1 and 2 made you commit into your jumps if you jumped while rolling on the ground, which sometimes led to shit like bouncing forever (until the timer runs out) on the bumpers in Metropolis Zone. In Sonic 3, you can control Sonic in the air like usual after pressing jump in midair even if you jumped out of a roll, while the other two characters also give control back to you by using their midair moves (flight/glide)

The other anon explained it better than I did, it gives you back air control. This isn't that useful but there is a video that shows this trait being used to get you out of an otherwise impossible pit in Ice Cap between two pillars.

Yes, some of the devs of the game have been fans of the series since it started. but that doesnt make it just a fangame.

These are the guys who remade sonic 1, 2, and cd so well that even the head guys at sega acknowledged that they remade the game better than the originals were.

Plus, alot of the original devs of the classics are still working on it, like Iizuka. If Iizuka isnt happy with the quality of what they are making he makes them improve it. There is a quality filter to it still.

These guys have been wanting to work on sonic games since they were kids, and have had years, most likely decades of ideas in their heads.

Some of the devs of newer mario games were probably guys who grew up with mario as kids and wanted to work on mario games. does that mean that all of the new mario games are fan games too?

I can't speak for anyone else but my problem is that it's yet another Sonic game to recycle the same levels with only the bare minimum in terms of updates.

You go into the caves of Green Hill Zone, okay, we already did that in Generations. Junk piles in Flying Battery, who fucking cares? Did they just throw in the first idea they came up with?

Chemical Plant looks decent, but couldn't they have had the balls to make it *look* a little different? Different colors, or have it take place later at night so everything is dark?

If the revealed zones' ratio of old to new levels wasn't 2 to 1, then I might be singing a different tune. It just kind of looks like more of Generations style bullshit.

Those animated cutscenes would have been nice to have in the game, too.

What is a "traditional" Sonic game?
Sonic 1-3+K era was only a 4-5 year period out of Sonic's 25+ year lifespan.

That's how bad Sonic's legacy has been since then that the "golden" age of Sonic ended 20 years ago.
Occasionally you'd get a solid game like Advance, but generally they were mediocre at best with half baked ideas.


"What is a Sonic game?" Is something that SEGA themselves seem to struggle with because they try the same broken thing over and over again rather than revisiting the games that were actually good. The old Sonic games were all about preserving momentum when possible, the drop dash is an awesome mechanic that will assist in that immensely.
The game has bosses at the end of each act as well, many of which are using some new mechanics we haven't seen before.

The entire game is "romhack tier", in the sense that for the last 20 years romhacks have come closer than anything else to being legitimate followups to the classic gameplay. Only romhacks have consistently displayed appropriate physics. Only romhacks have made sensible expansions on the roster. Only romhacks have given us what we actually wanted: more of what 1, 2, CD, and 3K already gave us.

So now a game like Mania is coming out, and it actually looks like an honest to god followup to the classic gameplay. Of COURSE it looks like a romhack, because only romhacks have ever come this close to being a worthy successor to the original games. Being "like a romhack" in this sense is nothing less than a badge of honor.

The only difference is that this "romhack" has a budget, is built from the ground up, is officially licensed, and could possibly serve to further cement the dev team's ability to make a fully original game.

But no, it's apparently a "romhack", in a negative way, because we're revisiting familiar locations. Nevermind the improved visuals, significant level design overhauls, remixed music, etc., because the NAME. I guess Generations and Forces are romhacks too. Super Metroid is a romhack of the first Metroid. Fable II is a romhack of Fable.

Sonic 4's off the hook though, because it changed the names.

Nobody promised a completely original experience. I don't understand this complaint. Yes, the rehashed Zones bog the game down and I wish they didn't, but you shouldn't be surprised whenever they reveal an old Zone again after being told that they would be the majority multiple times over.

Cheap character creation that was probably implemented last minute when Sonic Boom flopped and they realized they needed something else to replace him in the new crossover game.

Marble Garden's vertical cynilers that you run down are in SSZ.
Carnival Night's tube/chute things are in CPZ.

Ice Cap and Launch Base might have their musical issues, but that leaked new Zone looks "water Zone"-ish, so I could see them not bothering with that either.

What I really want is some fucking Azure Lake. It can take gimmicks from shit like Aquatic Ruin and the like.

I've been on that train of thought since the reveal trailer, but as time has gone on, and Chemical Plant got revealed, I've more and more warmed up to the idea of Azure Lake instead.

Just thinking about it, it would count as an "Old Zone", but it would have almost 100% new and original level design in both Acts. And there's no way they'd have two "grassy lake throwback levels".

Same with Mystic Cave, actually. I really wanted that in, but I think it'd be better if it was relegated to donating gimmicks to a more 'fresh' classic Zone, like Hidden Palace (Sonic 2) or Endless Mine.

And I'm saying this as someone whose two favorite Sonic 2 Zones are Aquatic Ruin and Mystic Cave.
