Yeah, STALKER seems to surprise and kick rookies' butt, especially nowadays. You rambo and play it like a generic console trash, you get killed. Simple as that.

Now, to get smoothest start with STALKER games, Consult this Starting Guide,
then see the /vg/'s huge Stalker General for more tips and links: >>>/vg/stalker

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.

I got stuck for days in Clear Sky when leaving Clear Sky base (I thought I could sneak by the machine gun unnoticed, a fucking fool) and that was the reason I dropped the game at this point and never came back.
I got stuck in Call of Pripyat when controller possessed all my team mates and I wanted to keep them all alive, and when I was trying to kill the chimera. Shit was awesome.

But SoC? It was easy. Still great, but I expected it to rape me anally and leave me to die in a trash bin and was disappoint (the same I expected from Gothic series after reading and hearing multiple times that it was "so hard" and yeah, it was a bit difficult, but not even close to what my friends and the reviews said).

I still crave for a game which would be fair in all its systems and difficulty, but would be so fucking unforgiving that I would cry my eyes out.
Maybe Souls series will scratch that itch (haven't played them yet), or Ninja Gaiden as I heard it's hard af, but I learned to treat every "omg this game is so hard" with a grain of salt after Stalkers and Gothics.

Is it just me, or is hipfiring while crouching more accurate more accurate than trying to aim down sights? ADS don't even seem as accurate, especially with the pistols having chunky ironsights and kicking up with every shot

It's not a meme. Tons of rookies have cried for help / "game fixing mods" at the VERY beginning of SoC, as they've gotten their asses raped by the very first mission in Cordon. Usually followed by not being able to get across the train tracks in same area.

Yes, modern gamers are THAT inexperienced, and yes - STALKER differs from modern, typical shooters and their pacing THAT much.
Yeah, I had no major problems with it either back in 2007, as the game merely reminded me of a mixture of System Shock 2, Far Cry (1) and some Fallout 1-2. All titles that a typical /v/ goer has almost certainly never played.

CoC does NOT combine all the games into one!
It simply slams all the MAPS from all 3 games into one huge SANDBOX EXPERIENCE, with no plot or anything to deal with. Thus, it becomes a bit better DayZ clone, but totally misses the major appeal of the STALKER games; You're not just surviving for the sake of survival, but actually progressing somewhere, towards a major goal.

tl;dr: CoC is boring as fuck, TFW3 did sandbox experience better, and no mod is a replacement for the original vanilla games.

Bought the bundle in summer sale, started with SoC. Vanilla graphics was a big off-put for me, and once I tried autumnaurora I couldn't go back.

One of the worst examples I've seen during the years of lurkin' and postan' on STALKAN' threads has been an Anon who did not realize that you can TRADE with the NPCs.
It all just works as an evidence towards the theory that modern games are too casual-tier handholding and simple.

all there is to do in coc is do randomly generated quests and sell shit until you have the best gear in the game then reroll as another faction and do it all over again. rerolling doesn't even make the experience any different except for which factions shoot at you and where you go to dump all your shit. there's not even real faction wars, just faction patrols shooting at each other if they happen to spawn in the same area.

Not this anon, but I agree with him. When I played SoC for the first time it felt like the pinnacle of gaming to me. I fucking loved everything about the game - the world, the NPCs, the mechanics, the plot, the atmosphere.. It's one of these games that I compare other games to, not the other way.
Yet when I finished the main story line and came back to Cordon, I just couldn't do generic "kill boar" or "find artifact" quests, because I just got to the reactor and saved the zone, I was a fucking god and I would have to literally drop the mouse and throw my keyboard away when fighting a boar for it to pose any threat.
The plot not only gave you direction and a goal, but also thrown increasingly difficult and dangerous obstacles at you. When you're done with it, there is nothing demanding or just interesting to do anymore.

That's why I don't like the idea of free play. Games should end, and they better end in a way that will make you sleepless for the next 3 days.
