Unless you're using .50 all pistol calibres are equally worthless in terms of terminal ballistics.

I'm fairly certain there is a considerable difference between a .380 and a 357 Magnum.

Apparently Pistol caliber differences are enough that Police went from using .38 to 9x19mm to .40 S&W, and refuse to use .45 or 10mm

>I'm fairly certain there is a considerable difference between a .380 and a 357 Magnum.
Nah. There's a quantitative difference in things like muzzle velocity and pressure and whatever but the terminal ballistics are equally ineffective.

Unless your pistol is producing projectiles with rifle-tier energy then you could be shooting basically any calibre you want. Pistol rounds don't have enough energy to cause a stretch effect so the only damage they do is crush damage, and an expanding 9mm round is just as effective at that as a .45 or a .357.

>but why did the police do X
They didn't. I guarantee you that nothing except a few dumb departments have done that, and the overwhelming majority of everyone else still uses 9mm.

>I had heard that 10mm's were rejected because they had a tendency to kill people through excessive hydrostatic shock
Unlikely. Firstly because anyone buying ammunition for guns isn't going to be concerned about it being too effective. You don't shoot at anything you're not trying to kill.

Secondly because hydrostatic shock is inconsistent and varies from individual to individual and even within individuals shot to shot. It's not a criteria for anything. Bigger bullets give you bigger pressure waves but nine times out of ten that's not going to matter.

More likely it was rejected because it's a bigger round that is no more effective than the smaller one it's replacing, and if all pistol rounds are effectively equally bad then you take the one that you can take the most of.

>What's the point of tacticooling
The M45A1 is a modernized version of the 1911 for use by the Marines.
>obsolete
Now I know you're just talking out your ass. Pick up an M9 and tell me you don't get a "I have tight tolerances" vibe from it. Pick up a 1911. Tell me it doesn't give you a "I'll fuck someones day up and keep functioning" vibe from it. Now watch this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CGWvJOXP9k
The 9mm overpressure (what you want when shooting through vehicle windshields and light body armor with a 9) over-penetrates and leaves a relatively small cavity. The .45 (punches through windshields and light body armor without a +P load) leaves a larger cavity, expands more, and doesn't over-penetrate. The .45 +P over-penetrates, but at the same time it leaves a massive cavity. They say that 9mm is better, but only because of mag capacity. 9mm has a much more noticeable recoil than .45, meaning harder followup shots. If that first shot doesn't do the trick, you'd better hope you have a .45.
>>382216970
Your opinion is shit, but I will begrudgingly respect it.
>>
>>382218386
Even if you swear by .45, there are much more modern platforms for using it, ones that have double-stacked magazines. 7 shot capacity is just silly today.
>>
>>382218386
>Pick up an M9 and tell me you don't get a "I have tight tolerances" vibe
M45A1 parts are hand-fitted and non-interchangeable between two different pistols. How's that for tight tolerances?
>9mm has a much more noticeable recoil than .45
How so? The projectile is faster but also lighter, the muzzle energy is actually quite similar.

Well, that also depends on the mass of the gun (and operation method).

The point of using a firearm (especially a short range one like pistol) isn't really killing somebody through inflicting long-term bleeding, it's incapacitating/killing them to the point where they can't return fire.

>So whats the point of there being so many handgun calibers?

There really isn't as many as you think (that are actually viable). A lot of them were made to address certain needs in a handgun or percieved needs. The only three that are actually 'out there' are 9mm, .40 and .45.

.40, 10mm and .357 magnum are good choices for shooting at critters like wolves, coyote, hogs but it would be otherwise impractical to carry a 5 inch .44 magnum holding 6 shots to deal with 3 armed, violent attackers as it holds less rounds, is less shootable and does not allow for quick reloads or malfunction clearances. I can go more in depth to this shit but I don't even bother with this on /k/, let alone a vidya board.

Some specialist cartridges do exist for a reason. Subsonic ammunition, for example, doesn't create a sonic boom and so is quieter (and thus makes more sense in silenced weapons).

Mostly though, in pistols, it's meaningless. Bullets, like everything, kill you by destroying your brain. In the case of bullets they do this by either making you bleed so much that you lose blood pressure and your brain tissue begins to die, or by stopping the flow of blood to the brain directly (e.g. by destroying your heart or severing vital arteries).

To accomplish this bullets have two wounding effects - stretch effect, and crush effect. Let's consider a rifle bullet. When a rifle bullet hits you it has so much force that it literally blows your tissue apart. This is the stretch effect. It creates a "temporary cavity" where the tissue is blown apart - this cavity disappears when the tissue returns to its position, but the damage has been done. The crush effect is simply the destruction caused by the bullet moving through your tissue, and it leaves a "permanent cavity." The stretch effect in a .50 is so severe it can stretch your torso apart completely, but the crush effect is barely more noticeable than a 5.56mm.

Pistol bullets are so small, light, and slow that they have no stretch effect. You are essentially poking 9mm holes in someone. Upgrading that to a 10mm hole will 99.99% of the time never ever matter at all in any way. But it will mean that instead of being able to poke 14 holes in someone you can only poke 7 because the bigger bullets and the bigger cartridges needed to propel them take up more space.

This is why pistol wounds have an 80% survival rate. Unless you hit the heart, the brain, or an artery, you have done very little actual immediate damage. Even a lung shot can be fixed with a chest seal pretty easily.

As far as penetration goes, so long as you have 12" you have enough. There's no points for overkill in real life.

>But ive heard stuff like some rounds work better with silencers
Suppressors, first off, not silencers. Second, yes, the speed of a round and the amount of gas it puts out is important when it comes to noise suppression.
>some have more stopping power
10mm, .45 ACP and its variants, .45 Colt, and all sorts of other rounds are known for their stopping power. Stopping power comes from several things; penetration, fragmentation, cavitation, and expansion. When a bullet hits flesh, it begins penetration. The deeper it penetrates, the worse the wound. If a bullet over-penetrates, the damage it does is reduced, and your immune system and surgeons have an easier time dealing with the wound. Some bullets have a tendency to undergo fragmentation, which is a nightmare for both living tissue and the surgeons who might not even get there in time. Cavitation is the forming of a cavity inside a solid body. If you look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CGWvJOXP9k, you'll see what look like massive cavernous bubbles forming inside the gel behind the bullet. This is good to see in someone you want dead. Finally, when a bullet is penetrating, it's "expanding" or "mushrooming." See the attached image for a visualization. When a round expands, it tumbles, rips worse holes in tissue, and overall just fucks your day up. Expansion also causes drag, which reduces the chance of over-penetration.
>and others have better penetration
That would be stuff life 5.7mm. Those rounds are meant for punching through body armor using high speed and a reduced cross-section. Think of it like a needle. It'll punch through your clothes, hurt like a bitch, and fuck you up, but a lead ball hurts even more if it can penetrate through your clothes and flesh. Likewise, bullets meant for punching through things aren't fit for staying inside people.
>Are these thing barely noticeable or just straight out bs
The differences in performance of two different rounds can be quite noticeable.

Long Guns are legal in Japan, but the process and harassment you get from police on a monthly basis make it not worth even attempting to get one.

You basically have to have a spotless criminal record, recommendations, a secured gun safe in your home, provide a highly detailed map of your home to police showing where the guns AND ammunition are, and subject yourself to random searches of your home every month for a year after you get approved for the gun, then once a year after that, where the police will enter your home, verify the guns and ammo are where you said they were, and verify that you did not use any unaccounted for ammunition.

Purchasing ammunition requires written permission.
You'll need to pass a safety course,
The tests and permit lasts only 3 years and must be re-taken.

You need to demonstrate mastery of the weapon, and pass a shooting test, get a psychological evaluation, and get a form signed by the psychiatrist.

Additionally, if you go to a gun range in Japan, you need to turn in your brass casings and a form signed by the range master certifying you used those cartridges for target practice.

If you go hunting, you need a separate permit and associated tags to hunt the game you requested.

Oh, and you can only own a 12 gauge shotgun at first.
If you demonstrate yourself an upstanding citizen and own the shotgun legally for more than 10 years, you can go through the process again and apply to own a rifle.

This will all cost you about $1500.

On a positive note, you CAN sell your game meat through a licensed butcher.

it's a Lebedev PL-15, developed at Kalashnikov, designed with input from sports shooters, police and spetsnaz for military, government and recreational use.

Almost perfect bore axis, super durable (supposedly 10k rounds lifespan with super-hot russkie 9mm ammo, 3x that with commercial 9mm and 5x-10x that with sub-sonic ammo), ergonomic design, 100% ambidexterous.
>>
>>382226091
>3x that with commercial 9mm
Glocks have a warranty life of 40k shots of commercial 9mm, not sure I'd call 3/4 of that "super durable".

Also I've heard Izmash had some production quality issues. This gun does look pretty cool, but it's only a prototype.
