yes. it's one of my most favourite games of all time but it really is a diamond in the rough and far from perfect.
the graphics are dated, controls take some getting used to and the story isn't groundbreaking.
however the level design, the gritty atmosphere and quests are second to none.
if you're still interested, then buy the gothic universe edition for 4 bucks and start with gothic 1. the series has a lot of recurring characters and you'll get the most of your experience if you start at the beginning.

i replayed both gothic 1 & 2 with a controller using xpadder last year and it made the controls a lot more enjoyable.

if you don't mind all the problems listed above and zero handholding (gothic 1 will shit down your neck because you're literally the new guy in prison) then go ahead and enjoy one of the best rpgs of all time.
