I've never seen these images before, didn't know anything, other than quotes from old magazine scans, about the early time travel concept had come out.

I think the cut levels and Sonic 2 Beta were a lot of people's earliest experience with this kind of thing. If you grew up with a Megadrive/Genesis it was pretty mind blowing. Like finding out years later that Metropolis Act 3 was Genocide/Cyber City Zone all along (reskinned).
