Like, 1 year has passed, I got 5-6 dudes, a stone fort, maybe geothermal and a few gun turrets, but then fucking rape raids start to hjappen with 15 or so enemies and I just get swarmed the fuck out of me

Some animals to move via pasture designation to attack enemies is a nice bonus

That's It, it isn't even that hard, dammit. I used a modded storyteller, who sent me a raid every other day and I still managed to get bored.
And no, I wasn't even using killboxes, just good old shoot from behind door thing.
Most of the time I had two-three shooters and two melee fighters to defend gunners.

It's easier if an early raid gives me a good weapon, but if I'm still at shit weapons-tier when snipers and assault rifles roll around I'm toast

If you're having problem with snipers, just let the enemies get closer.
Tactics 101, dammit - avoid fighting at disadvantage.
At least it worked in 16 version. Haven't played 17 much yet, kind of ragequit when pirate with incendiary launcher burned down my wooden storage rooms. Yeah, that's what I get for not using at least steel.

I bred and trained bears one colony. Then the top trainer got shot during a raid and died. All the bear friends he had went berserk and mauled my other colonists to critical condition.
By the time the named bears calmed down the other bears completed all the hauling tasks. The colony was very organized but everyone was dead.
After that I stuck to boars. While boars are dangerous too they aren't nearly as deadly as bears are.
