that's fucking sick when it's done right and you know it
>>
>>382209309
How is it done right, though? The games I've played that had it used it as either an effect of some insanity mechanic, or as something that a boss does. It definitely messes with you, but it also completely breaks the immersion.
>>
>>382209429
undertale did it right imo. it's impossible to not break the immersion doing that but it's gotta be able to bring you right back in when you realize it.
>>
>>382209429
MGS and Eternal Darkness did it well. Also what the hell am I meant to be looking at in the OP image?
>>
>>382209429
Conker's bad fur day.

He thinks it looks like an anime girl face.
Imagine being so autistic you see shit like this. Reminds me of people who pretend they see Jesus or something in splat patterns.
>>
>>382209968
Undertale got a bit obnoxious with the 4th-wall-breaking.
>>382210181
Those are good examples of breaking the immersion, which was especially bad for ED because it was supposed to be a horror game. Yeah, nothing more horrifying than being reminded that you're playing a videogame, right?
>>382210224
Ok, that one was pretty good. You got me there.

That being said, both my and your assumptions were wrong.

I don't like frequent 4th wall breaks, but one per game or unpredictable mentions make me giggle for a brief moment, you intolerable faggot

Games playing with the fourth wall as a well executed plot device>Games with no fourth wall breaking, even contextualizing tutorials and UI>Games that break the fourth wall once or twice for a shocking moment or decent joke>Games with minor fourth wall breaking where necessary>>>>Games that make dumb fourth wall breaking jokes to lampshade tropes that they are still using

The problem is that they're too lighthearted and popular for cool, mature, intelligent people like us, right guys? Now let's go back to posting memes and having console wars like cool, mature, intelligent people.

When Undertale did this I didn't even restart it since I was so disappointed with the game.
Also 4th wall breaking in an RPG is retarded.

Pirate Garry's Mod had a false crash along with an error code, that if you ask what means the code in Facepunch or Steam Forums you get VAC banned. It was a trap all along.

Garry's a cheeky fuck.
>>
>>382214559
Why?
>>
>>382215813
There are probably at least 45 people in this condition at all times each day.
>>
>>382216907
Because you're breaking the immersion in a role-play game just to be cute?
>>
>>382215813
I wonder what that would feel like.
>>
>>382214113
Even the obvious sarcasm and the fact that the gist of your post is correct does not save it from being really, REALLY stupid.
>>
It honestly didn't even make sense in Undertale. At least when Conker did it, it had some kind of payoff because it ended up being part of the plot. In Undertale, the final boss can cause the game to crash and save and load but it's never really acknowledged in any way. It's just something that happens for no reason.
>>
>>382216012
>VAC ban for piracy
And I thought garry couldn't be more of an insufferable cunt.
>>
>>382207472

>>382217349
Except the whole game plot is built around meta mechanics being in-game superpowers.
All 3 endings use that.

>m-muh self aware fiction
It was okay when Shakespeare and Moliere did it (once each in Hamlet and Harpagon) but this retarded trope has gone too far.
>>
>>382212687
What was that on consoles? was it still artifacting or did they have something else platform appropriate?
>>
>>382214979
IWBTG is full of shit like that

You can die at the very end of the end credits and have to start the entire final boss over again to win the game
>>
>>382209429
I thought it was effective in Arkham Asylum. Was the first game I played to do that to me, and really got me.

Of course, it can be pretty shit and annoying if the game didn't earn it first.
>>
>>382210782
>Those are good examples of breaking the immersion, which was especially bad for ED because it was supposed to be a horror game. Yeah, nothing more horrifying than being reminded that you're playing a videogame, right?
But ED isn't scary at all, the scariest thing is finding a room full of supplies only to find it's an illusion.
>>
4th wall breaking is objectively bad since it ruins immersion, that's why Deadpool is an overrated movie.

Doesn't DragonQuest 3 do this?
All I remember is that the game told me I was a great person so I dropped it immediately
>>
>>382219376
Yes it is inherently good, it's the whole reason people get invested in things, the greatest movies of all time wouldn't be nearly as good if they kept reminding the viewer it's fictional for example. Maybe if your game is shallow, like some shitty indie 8bit rpg where immersion wouldn't redeem a goddamn thing, it wouldn't matter.
