The only problem with the FE fanbase is how fucking divided it is. I'm pretty sure a good portion of the fanbase only like a single game out of all of them and hate the rest. And it doesn't matter how similar they are to each other, they'll like one game and only that one. You can't just like it all as a whole, pick a side or you are cancer, basically. It's not entirely different from most of the series that have been running for 30ish years, everyones going to have a different favorite if they've been paying attention for a while. FE has been a bit different though because of the full embracing of waifuism, which is going to cause a more bitter divide than something like the difference between Mario Galaxy and SMB3. But, the franchise was seemingly on its last legs before Awakening anyway, so maybe it had to be this way, who knows.

The older games, at least the first 5 Kaga games, were just medieval fantasy SRPGs with an anime artstyle. Kaga just wanted to make a fun SRPG series with plots revolving around warring kingdoms.

However after he left ISIS made the GBA games and the tellius games, and while there were some tropey characters, they weren't made just to pander to fetishes. It's once awakening happened they realized that they could just make every character pander to some fetish instead of writing interesting characters.
