Budokai 2, 3, and Tenkaichi 3. I haven't played Infinite World or Burst Limit, but those seem to be very good Budokai successors also (especially since IW seems to just be 3 with a touch-up and more GT content). Super DBZ also seems to be a very interesting take, but I never got to play it. I played Xenoverse 1 for an afternoon a while back and it seemed alright. DBFZ is going to shit on them all though, even the good ones; it looks that perfect.

Honorable Mention to Advanced Adventure which is a DB game rather than a DBZ game but is fucking fantastic nonetheless.

The lack of true depth (beyond all the little tricks you can do with flying around, knocking people certain ways and teleporting and such during your physical attack strings) is fine because that's not what it was going for. Tenkaichi went for gameplay that looked and felt more like a fight in the anime than an actual fighting game, and even though I like fighting games I appreciated what it did and enjoyed the roster size that allowed, even if a lot were similar.

I usually ended up playing 5 Randoms vs 5 Randoms over and over on either Kame House or Hell. Doing the motions in the Wii version was fun as fuck.

Tenkaichi 3 all day every day. Like one anon said, it was the only series that felt like you were playing a fight from the show. They had TONS of combos and techniques that you could utilize along with that fuck huge roster. I guess the longer you play it, the more the characters seem different from each other. The combo strings feel different on different characters based on their speed and regular square only fight strings.

Best way to play it is to spend a good while adding red portaras to every character. Only the health ones though should be like only 2 reds on each person. Matches are longer and it gives you time to read your opponents moves over the course of the fight.
I still play that shit with my friends and family every now and then surprisingly.

Hyper DBZ is without a doubt the best Mugen game ever that trys to have depth, and DBFZ is an actual Dragonball fighting game that will have a huge playerbase and probably be at EVO at least once.

BT3 had tech. The camera would get in the way a lot because splitscreen but it was the closest I've seen a DBZ game from being a legit competitive one

It was a combination of a messy airdasher with some tekken block mechanics and high/mid/low strings. It also had something akin to korean backdash/backsway and 1f parries (on fucking HIT lmao)

It was broken and not really balanced, but it was fun and it kept you on your toes

Budokai 3 is the typical choice, but people forget the bullshit that was dragon rush and how it butchered the fighting in the game and couldn't be turned off. Technically Infinite World corrected this and is objectively better but got reviewed worse for its late release and was completely forgotten due to the next generation of consoles.

Burst Limit would have been better then all the budokai games if not for its shitty character roster and short story mode. They should have continued with this franchise.

Raging Blast series would have been better than the Tenkaichi series if it actually had a relevant story mode.

Honestly I'm going to have to go with Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2 here being the best of the DBZ games. You got character creation, a large character roster, mod support, decent gameplay (not great but decent) character customizeation, online etc

Tenkaichi 3 for its time was the best but it has aged worse than the original budokai games have.
