Paladins have been cross faction (in game) since roughly BC (since thats when horde got paladins) as we've always had Tirion as our leader

Druids, Mages and Shamans have always gone cross the faction boundries with Cenarion Circle, Kirin Tor and Earthen Ring

Outside of Warlocks, the rest are really just drifters in their factions, warlocks only really rank as assholes cause of the atrocities they perform on people for their meme shit
I guess you can also say rogues too, but only the ones that are involved in espionage/assassination, which is a small proportion in lore

Not to mention if you wanted to do the most damage or the most healing or the tank the most damage you always went with the tried and true builds and MAYBE deviated a few points here or there which again would have more than likely only been percent increases to an abilities damage or healing which imo is not very interesting.

it does. The Light and The Naaru are not magical gods that you have to worship in order to use the light. All the light asks is that you have faith and it will work. If you gave an Ogre a rock and told him it would give him command of the light and he truly believed it did. You'd have an Ogre Paladin. it's why you have shit like the Scarlet Crusader who can use the light for evil ends.

Lorewise? In TBC Belfs enslaved the light but at the end of the expansion realized that was a dick move. They worship the light in the same capacity human paladins do. In context of other races, all they have to do is believe that a god is granting them boons and they can command the light. It doesn't have to the Naaru or the Light it just has to be a god. For the Tauren, it is An'she the right eye of the earth mother. (You were technically right, in lore they consider themselves sun druids but mechanically they are paladins) for Trolls, its often times the Loa that they channel their faith in the light from. Most cultures have their own little gods. Its why most races can play as priests but not paladins

Its a bit more tricky. Paladins use the light differently than priests. They channel it directly through their bodies rather than simply borrowing its power. This is why there is no Undead Paladins but there is Undead Holy Priests. There is actually an Undead Paladin in lore but he's in a constant state of agony. Paladins as you know them are directly affiliated with the SIlverhand. Every Paladin minus Tauren would have at some point had dealings with the order. High Elf paladins are no Different but the Blood Elf Paladin equivalent you have now are known as Blood Nights and basically the idea was protecting their people at any cost. So they abandoned the teachings of the Silver Hand, Enslaved the Light, then loosely re-embraced the teachings of the Silver Hand though their own version of it.
