Why does this over rated game get so much praise ?
Because it set standards, at least it set mine
>m-muh narrative driven fps with in-game cutscenes!
I played it for the first time recently after having already played Half-Life 2 and was pretty shocked by how overrated it truly is. There's also barely any actual plot in the game as well. And the FPS elements aren't anything to write home about, or the "puzzles" either.
And what the fuck was this thing?
>>382178140
It's a breddy good game unlike HL2
>>382178140
because it was mindblowing in 1997, you had to be there to understand. it was the first fps to have "cutscenes" that let you keep control of your character and the gameplay, it looked good, had the best AI ever seen, and the most involving story for an fps at the time. It also launched the most influential modding scene of any FPS.

that's your problem. back in the day this game was revolutionary and it looked amazing.
that thing is some kind of king but he's also a slave or something idk. I used to love the half life lore but now i can't remember nothing of it.
Watched my dad play it as a kid and thus I can put on those sweet nostalgia googles

Valve's products in general (except maybe L4D), have always pushed boundries.
Valve pretty much don't do anything unless it's 'going forward' in one way or another.
It also THE moddable game, maybe even series.
>>382178441
It's the Che Guevera of Xen aliens.
Is Black Mesa good?
>>382179276
It's a mix of HL1 and HL2, take it as you wish.
>>382178880
What the hell does HL2 actually do better than HL1? I have no idea why anyone wouldn't think the gameplay would be inferior.
>>382178926
if i remember right he and his xenos scum we're running from the combine and hiding out in Xen a "Borderworld" and trying to invade earth to turn it into their own refuge but big dick gordan freeman fucked him up with some rockets to the brain
Well guess what, at least Valve themselves are gud enough to realize it's overrated and mediocre. Too bad they also gud enough to realize that video games are just a shitty hobby for trash tier losers so they use them for the only good things they provide: the tech toys and the money retards spend for them. See you in Hawaii faggots, yes the real life one, haha!

DOOM's modding scene shits all over Half-Life's.
>>382180478
it actually did but in the multiplayer aspect of the game. you installed half life, you had: a science fiction shooter, a ww2 mp game, a football game, cops vs terrorists, a racing game, an action movie style game, zombies, etc.
>>382178140
Surface Tension is one of the best levels in an FPS ever. Game had a great variety of guns and pretty great AI for the time.
>>382178140
Because it's fucking gr8, m8.
>>382180478
And Quake based games too. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory servers were way more modded: much more maps (and they had more going for them too), entire game mods, UIs, later on even more option menus, custom voice quick chat including music.
Oh and idTech3 > Source on the sole basis of: ^1C^2O^3L^4O^5R ^6T^7E^8X^9 MOTHERFUCKERS
As a kid, I unironically was unimpressed by other games like CS and COD for this single reason. You don't have colorful text all over the place? You don't have music and memes blasting? You don't have a dildo knife? Each of your maps don't have a secret disco room that has a panel to fuck with the map? Pfft, get out.
>>382178441
it's a giant version of one of those annoying flying enemies who you're supposed to infer to be a higher rank baddie than the lightning guys or giant bee-shooter armored guys (for a ton of reasons). it's the thing holding the portal open.

it doesn't matter how many custom mods they have running on servers that change silly things. what matters is in impact the mods made in the community have had on gaming in general. half-life clearly wins, since iterations of those mods are still being played 20 years after the original game launched, and they have completely changed the way we think about online fps games.
>>382181815
Half-Life 2 is a dumpster fire compared to HL1. Valve tried to recreate the experience of HL1 while completely missing the point in terms of story and gameplay.
HL1 was great because it didn't give a lot of exposition, doling the story out a bit at a time, but never really revealing the whole picture even at the end. This was because of the nature of the story: you're just some guy trying to do his job when a bunch of shit that's way above your paygrade causes hell to break loose, and everyone's running around this underground claustrophobic hellhole trying not to get their faces chewed off by alien burlap sacks with teeth. And while that worked amazingly for HL1 because of the tension, HL2 has so many downtime moments where nobody will STILL explain shit to you for no good reason.
"Welcome back Gordon, it's good to see you! What's been happening for the past twenty years? No time to explain, get on this boat for 5 hours and trek down to a safehouse."
"Welcome to the safehouse, Gordon! What's been happening the past twenty years? I'll tell you later, play fetch with this robot dog using this zero point energy manipulator. Whoops, they found us, you need to go."
"Well Dr. Freeman, you made it to the Citadel. What's been going on these past twenty years? Fuck you I'm gonna open a portal, fight this gunship."
as someone who played both HL1 and HL2 within the last five years and no nostalgia goggles
HL1 is a 9.5/10 and HL2 is like an 8/10
>why isn't this 20-year-old game the best game?!
Fuck off.
>>382183845
>>382181815
they were both good, but if you played both games at release, I think you'd have to agree that hl1 was more innovative at the time, and an overall better experience relative to its competition up to that point.
Why did this overrated OP get so much food, water, and oxygen?
What were the best Half Life mods?
>>382184775
The Specialists, Counter Strike, Natural Selection, Firearms, Sven Co-op 3.0, Brainbread, Action Half-Life, Azure Sheep, Sweet Half-Life, Hostile Intent, and Day of Defeat.

>>382183845
Having played through the series recently, this is so true. HL2 slows you down just to exposition the fuck out of you and it's frustrating as fuck. You're just dicking around waiting for the "cutscenes" to end. In HL1 you can usually walk past or through most of those moments. The beginning you can't but I forgive that since the main game doesn't really start until you get the crowbar.
>>382178140
it was more technically impressive than anything else, being the first "true 3d" game (matrix rendered)
>>382181093
id tech gave way, WAY more to games than Doom ever did in twenty years. Shit, you've got games being released today that are still running Carmack's code under the hood; nobody uses Doom shit for fuck anymore except Doombabbies who- ironically enough- try to proclaim Doom is the best because they mod it to include features of later, better engines.

more like see you in Moscow, cockbreath
By today's standards it's a little generic but its gameplay format was revolutionary at the time. Immersive, plot driven FPSes weren't a big thing before HL2.
>>382180478
Not even close kid. Half-Life and Quake gave birth to dozens of successful franchises.
>>382178140
HL2 is nowhere near as over rated as the bioshock games

You hate it because it wasn't as fast as Doom or
You retroactively hate it because other modern games were inspired by it but executed wrongly or
You were already set on hating it
I'm playing through it currently for the first time, and I think it still holds up. Maybe you just have bad taste OP.
I played HL1 after all the HL2 episodes and I think it holds up fine, honestly. It's a halfway between old pure gameplay shooters and modern story shooters, in a good way.
Black Mesa (the original mod where you could still shoot and sprint at the same time) was the most fun I had with a game in a long time.
