What's your thoughts on Virtual Reality headsets?
>>
The technology isn't there yet. The software running on VR isn't there yet. Still way too expensive to boot.
>>
gimmick
>>
It's going the same way 3DTV's did surprisingly.
>>
>>382167302
A meme that gets pushed on us every 5-10 years that always suffers from the same issues it had in the 90s
>>
>>382167437
you have to start somewhere, and right now probably was the right time.

>>382167887
nah, it's an entirely different set of problems right now than it ever has been. the biggest being basic chicken/egg slow adoption troubles.

>>382167302
HMDs will be the display medium of choice for all digital media within five years.
>>
>>382167302
Waste of money for now.
>>
>>382167302
Tried the PSVR last sunday.

It's good, but they should wait for the ps5. We need better FPS and resolution, and a better price.
>>
I realy want one but I can't justify the cost of a Vive

my PC in its entirety was $1300, I can't responsibly add another $800 onto that
>>
>can't simulate the wind rushing by you as your ride a bike or jump out of a plane
>can't simulate the smell of anything you experience
>can't give feedback of anything your virtually "grab"
>strapped to your head
what's the point
>>
>>382169348
Yeah, VR now is basically just motion controls with motion tracking camera movement. Nothing special about it
>>
I hate that it's called "virtual reality" when there's nothing virtually real about it. Just a screen strapped to your face with two Wii remotes. I'm really sad to be born too late to experience true VR that can read my brainwaves and shit.

I bought a PSVR and am trying to find porn for it.
Sounds like I have to get a wankz vr subscription.

I assume that comment was meant for me:

And not the guy you actually quoted.
But I got a PSVR cause my friend offered it to me at a huge discount and my PC is to crappy for a vive.
>>
>>382167662
>surprisingly

You can't be serious.
>>
>>382170396
that's the most obnoxious willfully misconstrued shit i've yet seen from an anti-vr shill.
>>
>>382168308
>nah, it's an entirely different set of problems right now than it ever has been. the biggest being basic chicken/egg slow adoption troubles.

I feel like the biggest is actually that people don't want immersion. They want to play a game while also streaming it and checking their instagram/whatever all at the same time. It's a way of consuming "content" that is just contrary to the entire philosophy behind VR, and for that reason, I cannot see VR being broadly successful.
>>
>>382170769
Eh? There's no anti-VR shills. Only VR shills.

Secondly, imagine supporting the practice of buying a monitor that would only display games the company decides you can watch. That's how stupid you sound.
>>
>>382170915
Yes, I agree completely. >>382169862 has nothing to do with arbitrary software exclusivity.
>>
>>382170865
I want sim games. I just want to sit in my chair with a controller/kb+m/HOTAS and enjoy piloting something or running around with 3d headtracking. Most of the games/tech demos are "experiences" and it seems like they really want the player to get up, move around, and flail your arms like some kind of ultra gimped holodeck or a wii with a 3d-tv.
>>
I pity people who haven't tried good VR.
>>
>>382167302
Too expensive
Need a large space to properly use it
most games are just tech demos

Vr has a lot of problems but one problem no one realize are the shills/marketing. First problem is "It's the future" shtick when it's not. It's literally wearing a headset with 2 monitors close to your eyes and an acceleratometer. Second one is not one of them is saying that "It's only an accessory". Most of them think or market this as a monitor replacement. Third is most shills don't say that most people get sick or can't handle long term VR use. And these are just a few among many problems VR has.
>>
>>382167302
Well RE7 is great with it. We just need more powerful hardware and more games.
>>
>Buy a popular vr game on steam sale.
>The oculus touch support is crap to non-existent.

I look forward to Vive getting those 'Knuckle' controllers because I really don't like the big clubs.
>>
I got a gear VR recently, for $75 with the controller.
It's a pretty good experience, but the apps are pretty limited in terms of selection. Most of them are low quality 360 videos.
I've been using it to mask the shittiness of streaming sites.
>>
>>382167302

A decent start but way too expensive for what it offers right now.

$800 to look around a game environment in first person and do the same thing the Wii controllers did years ago is too much.
>>

the funny part is those "big clubs" is actually fairly nice in most cases
mabye you want something like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVlojsSWbx8

I've never binged as hard on video game as Hawken in VR with HOTAS. An entire weekend. Dreamed about it when I did sleep, which was really wild. took some acid on the last day, had to ask my brother to come to my house and chill, anxiety attack. To be honest though, It added an interesting element to the whole experience. Immersive but insistent in its flaws, Not enough things to do with it yet, just experiences. Need games.
>>
I like my gear vr, I wouldn't buy an oculus or vive until the technology has advanced drastically and there's actual content out for them.
But I like using my gear vr to play PS1, GBA and PSP games like it's on an enormous screen and watching videos is pretty neat
>>
I feel like it'll be extremely easy to get memed by it and become addicted. It's pretty much like selling your soul, to completely abandon yourself in illusions. The plan has been layed out for thousands of years.

Full hand tracking would be the ideal, yeah. There's gloves that'll give some feedback of 'touch' too but it's just haptics.

Right now, tracking issues aside, I think Touch and Knuckles have the right idea. Putting the controller within the hand and requiring minimal or no grip. Even if you're aware of them, it's closer to feeling like it's your hands in the game, holding a gun instead of the controller being the gun.
>>
>>382177935
i can see the cool idea behind this but im unsure many companies will support the idea
several companies have different ideas about how to do it, someone even made something like a powerglove
right now we need a unified scheme until then little progress will be made
>>
>>382177935
How long until someone releases a worm that makes that thing break your fingers?
>>
>>382177935
This seems goofy when the rest of your body isn't constrained in the same manner.
>>
>>382178491
I sincerely doubt they'd build the thing with motors strong enough to do that.
>>
>>382178418
I think there will be some general purpose stuff going on. A button is a button no matter what type of controller collides with it. The knuckle would make Grip triggers a standard too.

The more companies 'borrow' the best features from eachother, the closer we get to standardised methods. Companies wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel then.

>>382178818
It's not that bad really. In Surgeon Simulator when your hands push against something, your real hands show as a ghosted skeleton. In Wilson's Heart it's the same but your hands just phase through things and show the bones behind the object.
>>
>>382168308
>Different problems
Really?

>Too expensive
>Causes headaches and dizziness in some people
>Too much heat
>Too heavy
>Low battery life or cables everywhere
>Only support for a few games and even then it's a "tacked-on" feature
>Too expensive

Better off just going with the standard 3x monitor setup if you want immersion
>>
>>382167302
Interested, but too expensive, not that much gud stuff out to warrant such an investment in my opinion.
>>
They're great but where are the games

Important question: does the psvr headset only working with PlayStation significantly impede the user's ability to view vr titties?
>>
>>382167302
They are pretty cool, could very possibly become mainstream if the right games come out. FO4 and Skyrim VR might actually be good for example. Most significant factor right now is the cost preventing most people from getting one.

Even the shitty PSVR costs nearly $1000 if you don't already own a PS4. PC set ups are basically double that.
>>
>>382182275
Both.
>>
>>382182901
No, you can easily watch VR movies in the Media player. Just put the videos on a USB.

Also look up TrinusPSVR. Allows you to connect your PSVR to your PC and works like a charm. You can even set up room scale movement if you have some PS3 cameras lying around.
>>
>>382182901
I heard it can work on the PC but I don't know how well. Probably better off getting phone vr if you just want to watch videos.
>>
>>382182275
it's full stereo 3D, each eye actually has its own screen+lense assembly inside the HMD. and the modern HMDs have fully adjustable IPD and IOD, that actually move the display assemblies (not just adjust in software or any bullshit like 00s HMDs often tried to get away with). just look at screenshots like >>382181170 and >>382169862
>>
>>382182901
don't get a PSVR if you're just going to try hooking it to a PC anyway. don't get a PSVR at all, really, it's so inferior to rift and vive that it's not worth the $100-200 you'll save. really at this point wait for a few more months and see what the second-gen SteamVR stuff looks like.
>>
>>382183209
>>382183217
>>382183705
Interesting stuff. I wouldn't be looking for just videos, there's some other interesting programs I've seen gifs of.

A few months is what i was most likely going to do anyway.

Do you guys think the extra 200 for the vive is a fair sell?
>>
>>382183924
Nooooooooooo
>>
>>382184270
Reasonable. Cheers
>>
>>382183924
I'd wait. Both Rift and Vive are due for an upgrade.
