I disagree, Merlin+Waver is a better combination against bosses because they compliment each others strengths, even the memelist says so. Waver gets you started more np which helps Merlin to roll his strengths, and the defense down/tsun/np drain is very useful in longer battles combined with Merlin's healing.

I have both, and I'll rather use them in combination than double waver/merlin.

Because they like the characters? FGO isn't about the powercreep, it's about finding a husbando and a waifu you like and latch on it. MXH Alter was shit, and Proto Arthur was mediocre but they made tons of bucks because of their animations, their character and the husbando/waifu appeal.

This isn't a competitive game. I'm sure some people wanted Merlin due to gameplayfagging, but I wanted him because he's hot, fun and I love his voice. I'd waited for him since release when I had no idea how he'll be as unit.

Look at Assassins, the best unit continues to be the non limited Jack but that didn't stop people from whaling for King Hassan because he's cool as fuck.

Powercreep definitely happens (See Jeanne), but it NEVER makes a servant absolutely useless, ever. That, and servants like Jeanne also get buffed to make them stay relevant.

Because the game is singleplayer, there's no PvP meta to worry about, and the boss fights are always built around being able to be cleared with 3* units if you know what you're doing and prepare accordingly.
