I don't think he was that obsessive over the YouTube aspect of his creations. In all, I could only count about 3 animations (all extremely unfinished/short) and maybe a handful of drawings. He also tried to half-ass learning the guitar, so he could play like Ember McClain.

Well, to be fair, even in the earlier episodes they were never explicitly described as being the spirits of dead people. The best explanation they ever gave of what ghosts are in-series is that they're the result of ectoplasm fusing with lingering conscious or some shit, which is why some don't necessarily resemble humans at all.
