How hard is it to build an emulator box out of this thing?

I remember reading some time ago that they are not powerful enough powerful enough for N64 emulation, has that changed with the Pi 3?
>>
I don't get what the point of emubox which can't run PS2. Just get a mobile phone and connect pad to it.
>>
>>382120206
PS2 emus for phone?

Yep, right
>>
>>382120206
There's no linux ARM binary of any PS2 emu?
>>
>>382120301
cheapest chinese phone can emulate everything that raspberry pi can, for infinitely less hassle
>>
>>382120386
Can those phones do 240p?
>>
>>382120481
those phones can often do 1080p
>>
>>382119750

A real question is how hard is it to produce a train of thought that is contrived and irrational enough to conclude that making an emulator box is worth the time, effort or money in the first place. Let alone one that can't even play golden age vidya.
>>
>>382119750
Just make a tiny PC with good CPU and fan, a couple of usb ports, power, and audio out cable. Then cut out a cardbox
dump the machine in it, and spray paint the box with NOSTALGIA and you are good.
>>
>>382120386
Really? Cause I've not found a phone yet that can even do Sega CD emulation at all.
>>
>>382120648
I'm pretty sure modern core i3 can do decent emulation of everything on integrated GPU, save for RPCS3
>>
>>382120206
PS2 emulation is just not worth it.

PCSX2 is a shoddy piece of garbage that is too reliant on plugins/speedhacks. Some games still see slowdown even on 5Ghz CPUs.
>>
Extremely easy. RetroPi can be manually installed, or you can just copy an SD image of it and pop that into your Pi.

After that, getting games onto the system is as easy as loading games onto a USB stick, popping the USB stick into your Pi, waiting a few seconds (depending on how muh data you want to transfer to the SD), then removing your USB.

It's best to get a USB stick with an indicator light, that way you can be sure of when the data transfer is complete.

Simple as pie. Haha
>>
>>382120584
what's golden age vidya? the ps2 era because you were 5?
these things can play amiga so it's worth it if the OP just wants to play stuff on his tv

As someone who has made a Retro Pi, its really easy. Plays up to N64 and PS1. It's a bitch to get PS1 working but once you do, shits cash man.
>>
>>382120748
My galaxy s4 could do psp emu.
>>
>>382120386
>emulation on raspberry pi is a hassle
You download Retropie, put it on your SD card, do a little bit of configuration and your raspberry can now emulate like 20 systems
>>
>>382120584
It would make sense if someone made portable console case for Pi. Like some integrated screen and sticks.
>>
>>382121049
How's the N64 emulation?

I assume Saturn emulation is no go?
>>
>>382121185
You can make your own.
I made my own, although no sticks, I just plug my PS4 controller in.

>>
>>382121308
Yeah, and case, heatsinks just buy and attach themselves
>>
My PC is hooked to my TV already, but I've still been considering doing this. Only problem is that one nice interface that takes all your ROMs and puts them in a list and starts them on the emulator for you is Windows only, so it's sort of useless for a Pi. I might consider just using it on my PC unless there's an alternative.
>>
Do any of use a front end?

What's good if so?
>>
>>382121380
What are you, a limp wristed little bitch?
>>
>>382120386
Can you watch a youtube video?
Do you have 50 bucks?
If so, you can make a retropi.
>>
>>382121219
Saturn is nearly unplayable, but some PC emulators have trouble with it too. All the classic N64 games work pretty good though, Star Fox 64, Smash, and Mario Kart etc.
>>
>>382121452

What he meant by this
>>
>>382121431
>what is retropie
>>
>as soon as games pretty much changed to 3d only (N64+) emulation is not worth it cause these games age like milk

fight me
>>
>>382121474
Or you could just buy a 100$ phone and use it as emulator. Own HDMI screen included.
>>
Does a platform exist where it will upload saves from a Pi emu box to a cloud and be able to be pulled down by lets say my laptop or even my desktop automatically?
>>
>>382121380
You literally just stick it on. Setting up a pi takes fucking 2 seconds you mental midget.
>>
>>382121049
Only really tried Breath of fire 3 and it worked pretty sweet. no config was required. What have you played?
I found the N64 emulator was pretty unstabel. Mario 64 worked pretty good depending on which emulator i selected, but the lighting around the edge of the screen was a bit wonky and i couldn't fix it.
Yoshy's story and mischief makers on the other hand just wouldn't run on any playable level no matter how much i played around with the settings.

Also, hows the PSP emulator on it?
>>
>>382121431
Uh, RetroPie comes with a hella nice list interface.

> He can't build a micro console

Just stick to buying cheap Chinese knock offs and consoles you man baby.
>>
>>382121602
Yeah if you only care about graphics.
>>
>>382121618
Setting up Pi can take any amount of time because it's not consumer electronic but hobby device so quality control on parts just doesn't apply
>>
Honestly, the best comfy emulator is probably the Wii. You get one cheap as fuck. It's piss-easy to hack and you play most emulators on it.

It even lets you use the wiimote for wireless control.

Not perfect - no emulator is. But it's cheap and easy and comfy
>>
>>382121604
>spend double the price for less emulation functionality and no controller support!

Ok, you win. You've convinced me.
>>
>>382121642
Which Pi are you on, 3 should be able to handle all N64. Have you also tried OCing it? It really does give you a boost. And I have yet to try PSP but I heard it runs like shit.
>>
>>382121767
Raspberry Pi comes with its own HDMI screen?
>>
>>382121545
>>382121661

Well that's nice. Wonder if I should do that. But I'm still trying to justify it though since I already just play emulators on my PC. I've sort of been considering one just to use for my second monitor too since some games don't have full screen windowed and are a pain in the ass to alt-tab. Could just grab another mouse.
>>
>>382121759
For comfy, that would be vita or wii u until switch gets hacked
>>
>>382121759
This. You can literally pick up a wii for about $20 on ebay
>>
>>382121958
pii u is much more expensive though.
>>
>>382121732
graphic was their only selling point with "l..look we 3d now guyz..pls buy".
>>
>>382121858
Still on a 2, probably get a 3 later this year. It's overclocked but i guess it was just the limit of the hardware. Maybe they updated it and made the emulators run better in general, haven't really touched it in a long time.
>>
>>382121380

Your wording of your post is so awful I cannot even tell what you're trying to say, although it sounds dumb as fuck
>>
>>382121759
This. The wii is a great emulation station and easy to hack. Cheap as chips too.
>>
>>382122329
The 3 is a pretty nice upgrade from 2
>>
>>382122339
then keep your mouth shut if you lack reading proficiency
>>
>>382121892
Who doesn't already own a screen?
>>
My Pi 3 choices:
-Flirc case (a little more expensive, but sturdy and acts like one huge passive heatsink, no fan needed)
-Hori Pokken controller (best allrounder for Retropie unless you want wireless).
-Old X360 usb controller for N64

Everything up to PS1 runs like a dream. N64 support is soso, because N64 emulation generally is soso - first party games will run well with little to no audio crackling, but some games just corrupt the grahpics or won't work at all.
You can even install Drastic to emulate DS games. Drastic pulled the experimental package, but you can still install it manually

Retropie is super easy to setup. The basic setup involves nothing but flashing an SD card, and dragging and dropping game roms to a folder over wireless.
Anyone with half a brain can scrape for text and boxart, install new themes, etc. as well.
>>
>>382122512
So you gonna detach your PC and attach raspberry shitbox deliberately to play ancient games? Why you can't just run it on PC?

> Buy Touch Screen Monitor
> Retrofit LCD from old DVD player
> Use your TV
Theres alot of choice which is why people like to use Pi's instead of PC

How well does PSP emulate on this thing?
>>
PCB costs 35. Case and heatsinks extra 20. Some input device another 15. Sd card 10. So you spent 100$ and got yourself a mobile phone equivalent device which can't even be used to make calls, and you still need a screen which is probably already occupied by PC or console to make any use from it. What a great waste of money.

People just want "things to work" out of the box. Its the ADHD generation that cannot even have a proper talk face-to-face without getting antsy.

I've made a nice side-business setting up Retropie boxes for people's kids and charging around 100 bucks for it.
I just sent them a list of parts to buy and they send it to my adress.
It takes me 5 minutes to assemble it and clone the SD card from a preset 64GB image.
You can make mad dosh on lazy idiots.

As someone who has gone through the entire retropi process, let me tell you that it is easy as fuck. Keep in mind 2 things- the pi3 only has an HDMI port so you may need a converter if your monitor is a little older, it may have trouble with anything n64 or higher. Besides that its a 20 minute setup and is smooth as fuck.

I used to emulate games, but then I took an update to the knee.

It was all working perfectly, until I upgraded PSP from 5.50 Gen-C to 6.60 whatever latest hack name and all of my saves broke.

If it ain't broke, don't update it kiddies
>>
>>382123567
What can you play at, native resolution or does the tiny GPU in the pi actually have enough headroom to bump it up?
>>
How accurate are emulators than run on the Pi?

I guess it's not a problem for 4th gen and below, the bugs aren't noticeable. But what about playstation? As far as I know the best emulator are xebra/arbex and mednafen, and I'm pretty sure those can't be run on the pi.
>>
>>382122581
That was helpful. Thanks.
>>
the raspi sucks and getting one as an emulation box is retarded (at least if you aren't doing it just to have something that sticks up by the TV forever), but getting a chinkphone to do that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard

seriously though, doing it is zero effort, at least if you use the dedicated SD image -- write SD card, put into raspi, transfer over ROMs over wifi or just copy them over with a flash drive, play games

if you run the installer from in raspbian, there's a few bits of system config you need to do (almost all related to power saving, since controller input doesn't keep the framebuffer active and whatever, also there was a really stupid config issue that caused a fuckton of input lag, fixing it involved changing the display backend to dispmanx and there was something else I can't remember)

>>382121380
>a $.50 part that literally just sticks on is a problem
there's other things like a case that would make sense to bitch about, not the fucking heat sink (that you probably don't even need unless you're OCing the Pi like hell)

>>382122673
>not just using your TV
no seriously, if you aren't doing this, why the fuck not just use your PC then

the whole point is that you don't need to unhook your PC and move it out to the TV
are you some kind of retarded

>>382123102
>case and heatsinks: $20
you fucking what
if you spent more than $7 you're getting ripped off

also
>35+20+15+10=100
>80=100
and it's actually closer to 60 if you're not retarded

>>382122985
>32GB card

like, literally all of them, it'll fit
>>
>>382119750
The Pi 3 is great. It might take a while to set-up because you make mistakes along the way, and not everything's clear.
The easiest installation method is buying a Kit that has NOOBS to install Lakka in an SD card.
You need to be able to connect it to ethernet or mount the card on a PC to put games. Xbox and PS Controllers work fine, though I can't set them through bluetooth. Normal, USB controllers and keyboards work too.
So far my only real problems are playing PS1 games that have 2 discs, I can't get the memory card to work on Lakka specifically for those games. Resolution on N64 might be crappy though, and not all games work on it.
>>
>>382124432
>download every game for every cartridge based system
bleh, meant to be

>download every game for every cartridge based system (at least, pre-N64, the N64 fullset is like 12GB)
>>
>>382119750
Have fun with your input lag OP
there's better options for emulation than a raspberry pi
>>
>>382124095
720p works flawlessly. 1080p might be pushing it but I haven't fully tested it yet. Overall it looks and plays the same as playing PS1 games on a PS3
