FF12 was the first game where I thought the dub was actually good. However, after playing FFXIV, I'm kind of over the faux-olde English.

Is there any ESL who prefers their games English dubbed instead of the original Japanese voices? As an ESL myself, I find all English dubs atrocious, at least when the game is aimed at otaku/is a JRPG.

The nuances are not intuitively translateable, and any "equivalent" English parallel has connotations that don't fit the original meaning (or lacks them).

FFXII and Xenoblade chronicles are my picks, part of it is just that im tired of hearing the same anime voice actors in most games.

One of the issues with English dubs is that most Japanese games don't have a budget for English VA. They are, justifiably, focused on getting good Japanese VA.

Final Fantasy is an exception because as the only mainstream JRPG series in the West they have a large budget for localisation.

The dub is great but the localisation itself is awful; almost every word that comes out of Jansen's mouth is a total rewrite.

DMC4 was good. Not sure if that was a dub tho or if Capcom did the English VA only thing.

The translation was pretty shit in Persona 5, but I thought a lot of the perfomances by the english cast was great.

Characters like Ryuiji and Morgana were spot on.
