meh, karras was a more interesting villain. also, not enough games take place in that type setting. fit more in line with thief's weirdness.

>>
>>382086327
Yeah I sure love wandering around a cave system that looks entirely the same with a bunch of zombies and Burricks.
The mission has pretty much no stealth in it and the level design is a mess, only redeeming quality is the sound design with hearing the horn.
>>
>>382084757
>could get used to its controls
You know the game has 100% rebindable controls?

>>382086209
>Down in the Bonehoard
Great level. What's the fuss about? Just nuke the zombies with all the arrows and holy water in the level.
>Thieve's Guild
Too long, it's not a bad level just really tiresome.
>The Lost City
Great level in Thief Gold. Indiana Jones would be proud.
>Return to the Cathedral
My favorite level. It just oozes atmosphere and one of the few levels where you (probably) need to learn how to use the sword properly.
>Into the Maw of Chaos

>Return to the Cathedral
Does have the best atmosphere in all of Thief, I will give it that, but it is way too bloated for its own good with the entire Brother Murus arc who leaves you in the dark half the time with his requests.

>Thieve's Guild
Too long for its own good and hiding the object behind a tapestry is just a dick move and yes I'm aware that there's a scroll that strongly hints towards this.

>The Lost City
Way too easy to get lost in and once again the lack of human guards makes it pretty unengaging for the most part which is the same complaint I have with Down in the Bonehoard, it's just largely boring.

>Into the Maw of Chaos
A pretty lackluster finale, it's just running in a straight line for the most part.

Not even hating on the game but these levels really do mess with the pacing but it does have some amazing levels like Assassins, The Sword, The Mages Tower and Song of the Caverns.
>>
>>382086574
It's pretty good, I like the graphics and the open world aspect
>>
>>382083052

>>
I remember playing the game (demo) for the first time with my brother and cousin. We played it naturally/easily, because it had realistic stealth mechanics
>just hide in the dark and they won't see you
>turn off the torches with water arrows
>don't make any sound and you won't be noticed

I don't think dishonored really compares with Thief.

Garrett is likely to get his shit pushed in by any tard with a sword. Corvo on the other hand can murder 10 guys at once so there is really no reason to be sneaky in that game

>>382078089

>>
>>382090809
Doesn't taffer mean criminal or thief or something like that?
>>
>>382090921
>From PC Accelerator, interview with Steve Pearsall, project designer of Thief. The question, "What is a Taffer and where did it come from?" The Answer, "One of our level designers, Laura Baldwin, made it up. Taffer was meant to be a slang word that meant a common criminal, but has evolved into meaning any sort of low life."

>In different languages of Thief, the word taffer does not exist.[4] In the Russian, French, and German version, appropriate curses are used instead, i.e., villain, fool, retard, etc.

>The Polish version has its own translation of taffer, "Å‚acher". It compilates "Å‚ach", meaning "clout"; "Å‚achudra", meaning "scoundrel, scamp, rouge"; with the suffix "er", that is used in lowbrow type dialect, and/or an indication of a persons expertise.

>The Hungarian translation uses "bumburnyák" for taffer. It is like "silly", or "poor sod" in the meaning between the original and modern usage. Similarly to "taffer", this word cannot be found in regular dictionaries and sounds comic rather than obscene so guards can say it to each other and really bad guys as well.

>Others substitute appropriate swears according to intensity, such as, "lotor", "gauner", "hajzel", "darebák", "zlodej", etc.

http://thief.wikia.com/wiki/Taffer
It always amazes me that there is a Wiki for literally everything imaginable.

Thief 1 has one major advantage over Thief 2 and that is variety.

Thief 2 is all about stealth, yes it's arguably one of Thief's greatest strengths being amplified but it's done to a point that it completely throws out the D&D Thief dungeon crawl stuff which I found (for lack of a better buzzword) immersive and challenging. You still have to keep to the shadows even if it's a zombie or a burrick, but you have those options to dance around them while you're graverobbing for loot. The D&D Thief levels are arguably the most atmospheric and really flesh out the world beyond The City itself.

Down in the Bonehoard having those little details like the Alarus Extension even being mentioned even though it's blocked off, or basically the entire leadup to the hammer cathedral through old town is just amazing. In Thief 2 on the other hand it's a lot of stealthy sleuthing around the city to find out what the mechanists are up to and disabling their robots with water arrows the same way you'd disable a torch on the wall. There are very few of those really cool areas that kinda hint back to the D&D Thief style of game like the old haunted pirate ship on the lighthouse level that you have to dive to get to.

Thief Deadly Shadows kinda tried to go half in half but the engine and the physics and the movement and the loading screens and all sorts of shit about that game is fucking cancer to me and I hated playing through it. Thief 1 & 2 are both really good even though I prefer the first one but Deadly Shadows just makes me want to hang myself. And don't tell me to get the Sneaky Patch - i tried it and the game would refuse to lock my mouse to my primary monitor while the game was up in full screen so any mouse movement + a click would minimize the game, that doesn't even happen in vanilla Thief Deadly Shadows as shit as it is. The people who made the Sneaky patch are probably still on 2004 PCs with single monitor setups to not notice something like that.

This is clearly an issue on your end. It's asinine to think otherwise.
>>
>>382091394
Sure senpai.

Except for the fact that the game locks my mouse to my primary monitor when in full screen right after a fresh vanilla install and only starts to act like that after installing the sneaky patch.

And the fact that no other game EVER does that.

>>382098765
The Lost City is one of the best missions in any vidya, I can't fathom how you think it's shit.
Into the Maw of Chaos is amazing, even though it's linear. It's linearity done right, but I do admit the whole game wouldn't have been as good if all the levels were as linear as that.
Thieves' (learn english you fucking faggot) Guild isn't bad, it's just a really big map. I'm not surprised it gets shat on, because a lot of people are babbies who can't memorize a map of such size.
>>
>>382098872
>I can't fathom how you think it's shit.
Overly labyrinthine which means you'll spend the majority of the time lost and those kinds of levels hardly offer any stealth since there aren't any human obstacles (think there might me a mage randomly chilling in lava in one building though) and it's just zombies and Burricks.
True Dark Project ludo is found in missions like Lord Bafford's, Assassins, The Sword and The Mage Tower (best level in the game).
>>
>>382080671
/thread
>>
>>382098968
I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved The Mage Towers so much, but Lord Bafford's isn't that good. It's not a bad mission, but it's just alright. Assassins is amazing, though. You also forgot to mention Song of the Caverns, which is another mission in a human environment. I just wish the NPCs were more active - it would be great to see the opera unfold and viewers move around the map, but they just didn't have the technology at the time. I really wish Looking Glass Studios existed at this time, I hate how they disappeared, they're one of those developers that really made games that can be said to be high art. I'm sick of all the pleb shit we've been having for the last ten or so years.
>>
>>382099125
Arkane are comprised of a lot former Looking Glass Studios members, while I don't think the Dishonored games or Prey are as good as the games they're acting as spiritual successors to they're solid games and are the closest thing you'll get to those late 90s/early 2000s immersive sims.

And yes The Mage Tower is amazing, it's a large map and not a single inch of it goes to waste and the actual sneaking in each of the towers is great too except for the Air one I think where it's just waiting for those platforms to go up and down.
Song of the Caverns is really good too, though a bit short for a mission that late. I also really liked both Cathedral levels, thought the atmosphere in those ones were great.

Dishonored is pretty shit, but Arkane did make two great WRPGs, Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (even though the latter has really linear level design, it's still a great game).

>>382099407
>Air
I liked that one, as it had the accent put on platforming. I disliked the Fire tower, with its amount of guards.
>I also really liked both Cathedral levels
Return to the Cathedral is great, but not if you are playing on highest difficulty and need to kill all the enemies and drag the two bodies to their respective graves. Who thought that was a good idea?
>>
>>382099468
For fucks sake, no games, even today, have that amazing sound direction.
>>
>>382099606
Yeah Return does drag on with all those tasks you have to do for Brother Murus, thankfully you can actually skip that entire segment with some fancy tricks.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLKXUt3NHds

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic looks like a ton of fun, I've heard that its pretty buggy and the combat balance is kind of poor but has a ton of customization and replayability.
>>
>>382099790
That trick can't be done in Thief Gold, I think, as they fixed that bug.
>pretty buggy
I never saw any bugs in my playthrough, and everything else you said is true. It's worth playing, a great ride from beginning to the end, I wish it was longer.
>>
>>382099884

I've been walking around this level for months now.

I've taken out every guard, and honesty don't know where to go.

I'd look up a guide, but that's ruin it, so any hints that could help?

Anon, there's a point at which it's okay to look up a guide, and that point is when you've spent multiple months on a single level.

I never understood why anyone says that. Thief 2 has pretty shit levels apart from Life of the Party, Framed, and Bank.
Gold nas sprawling levels with crazy architechture. Compared to that Metal Age has dradfully symmetrical mansions which fits the theme I guess but also gets old fast. Running Interference is probably the worst level of all classic Thief's - you "break" into 2-storey mansion from one entry point after simply being given a key and help Chad get his waifu, fuck this. Shipping and Receiving had me groaning from constant backtracking to the code stations. Ambush is shit, Eavesdropping is tiny, Courier/Trail of Blood is shit, Sabotage goes on forever. Metal Age has none of the crazy stuff from Mage Towers, Sword, or Haunted Cathedral.
Also, Thief 2 has too damn many tile and metal floors. I like stealth, but fuck this game wants you to move slower than a turtle

>Stealth is piss poor easy
>Going loud is actually easier

Nice stealth game faggot

The missions that aren't relevant to the main plot aren't completely dry like a recent modern open world stealth game and the game actually picks up at one point
The string of non sequitur missions in thief is for the most part entertraining, I can't really think of a mission I despise, and they're all filled with flavor text, conversations, and environmental storytelling in some cases.

>Down in the Bonehoard
One of the best levels ever?
>Thieve's Guild
Gold only
>The Lost City
Is atmospheric as fuck
>Return to the Cathedral
Someone got SPOOK'D
>Into the Maw of Chaos
At least it's properly giant and weird. When you get there in Thief II it's just a monkey village.

Anon-senpai, second game also has less loot and these arrows are expensive. I'm just a thief struglling to pay rent.

It was my first so it's kinda special to me, although I can see why people criticize it

I'm with you on all the Thief games, on point remarks
I don't think immersive is a buzzword considering that's what Thief was about during that time
Deadly Shadows really feels half cocked in a lot of aspects, and I don't really care for the Keeper Enforcers/asinine faction system
DS does sort of coat itself as being lead into from The Metal Age, but it still barely feels like a true sequel, all things considered.

Just disable your second monitor before you start playing. I mean TDS even with Gold may have lots of problems but it's worth that much effort to play it, at least.

Seriously how did you navigate yourself out of Thieve's Guild but can't figure out The Sword? Despite all the weird stuff, you basically just need to go higher and higher to get the sword, and then descent to get out.

Graphics are too shitty. I prefer to play Dishonored 1 or 2.

I am divided about thief, 1 had the better story but 2 had better levels.
>>
>>382100034
I love Haunted Cathedral so much. I always spend several hours ghosting through it completely, which is hard as fuck with Haunt patrols and you carrying two dead bodies around

World building, setting up the scene and the character for when the story picks up.

In Thief 2, the beginning missions have no real interweaving story, but during those missions, you get information on what's happened since Thief 1 and who the Mechanists are.

1 had the best level design and story.
2 had the best antagonist and worst final mission.
