Tough choice. Open world games in their current state are mostly shit thanks to devs like Ubisoft. However, movie games are almost always shit because they offer very little in the way of replay value.

So my vote goes to movie games.

Mate, Uncharted 4 has more gameplay in it than 90% of AAA single player games that aren't open world.

Open World Games

Most games can be boiled down to "go somewhere and then cutscene" if you try hard enough but open world "walk to where the level starts" autism is a league of shit all its own.

Open world games. As of right now, most devs use just make them for brownie points. It allows them to get away with not having smart or even decent level design. Also exploration is dog shit in 90% of open world games especially since devs just copy & paste the same shit just to fill their maps with markers.

Define open world and movie games for me. I need more context before I could answer.

For example is Bloodborne and other RPGS open world? Is Fallout open world? I mean technically yes but I'd hate to put those in the same category as GTA or FarCry or something.

And then again what exactly is a movie game? I don't like Quantam Dream type games, but Uncharted games have puzzles and platforming and shooting so what makes it a movie game? Is it just a game with high quality cutscenes? A game with QTE? Cause then RE4 might count as the same genre and I'd hate to lose that.

>>
>>382065993
Uncharted 4 was the first time Naughty Dog overstepped the bounds of how much downtime/non-gameplay is acceptable for a game.

The endless bland climbing sections felt like such a chore, as did the Gone Home-esque parts where you just walk around a house and look at objects. With that said, it doesn't have "cutscene after cutscene", which is honestly actually the biggest problem. If it wasn't constantly insisting that you keep pressing buttons to walk/climb while the characters talk the game would be more enjoyable.

Fuck off David Cage. There hasn't been a single Quantic Dream that was even of passable quality story-wise. All of them have shitty stories, and since they're games focused purely on telling a story that's semi-interactive, they are all terrible games.

That's because Metal Gear Solid is different.

In MGS you have enjoyable gameplay. If you want you can skip all the cutscenes and still have a fun game. The story and gameplay are seperated most of the time. MGS1 and 2 even feature tons of missions you can do without any kind of story.

What people here dislike are ~cinematic~ games where the gameplay seems to be an afterthought just to provide some sort of fake interaction to call it a game. Like the game will make you watch a cutscene but you have to mash a button in a QTE. Or you have to follow a character for several minutes while he explains some story elements for you. Games like Uncharted are basically just huge QTEs.
>>
Open world games because the Uncharted series is better than 99% of all other games period.

I like the part where bugs attacked Lucas in the middle of the office in a dream and it's never explained. I also like the part where literal fucking cyber-aliens come out of nowhere pretending to be a dead old blind telepathic lady to attack Lucas because they want the Indigo Child. I also like when two statues came to life to try and kill Lucas. I like the part of the story where Lucas has the chroma or whatever the fuck it's called that comes literally out of nowhere and it's Mayan or some shit and has nothing to do with the rest of the story and Lucas was just born with super-powers. Or the part where the whole world is going under extreme ice age in a matter of days and it's never explained why. Or how you team up with hobos to take the Indigo Child to a portal in a military base to save the world.

Indigo Prophecy is a fucking hot incoherent garbage mess.

Movie games. I hate that everything has become open world ADHD/autism simulators but I still play and tolerate such games.

Movie games though... barf. If you can play the game on YouTube then it is not a game. I honestly don't even think the Uncharted was ever even really that popular. Every single game has been bundled with hardware for long periods of time which inflate their sales totals. Anecdotal evidence of my own, but a couple people I know picked up Uncharted 4 without knowing anything about it (even though one of them had the collection which they never got into) and they hated it because it just isn't really "video game" material. They both gave similar answers and didn't like the characters or theme or understand how this was popular. And they complained about the shooting comparing it to Gears which it is objectively inferior to.
>>
>>382069312
>Or you have to follow a character for several minutes while he explains some story elements for you.

Not him but that statement can apply to the Half Life series nd people generally like and praise those games here.
>>
As much as people bag on Movie games, I think Open World games are now the new bloat of today. Most of them are no substance Ubisoft / Assassins Creed tier games with no unique twists, gameplay, or story to them. There's only been a handful
>>
>>382065993
Open world at least brings something to the table.
Cutscenes are just a crutch for storytelling.
>>
You know? Uncharted only "affected" mediocre series and that was all.

Thanks to the open world meme even MGS became generic as fuck.
>>
>>382069619
This, at least movie games can have nice sequences and are somewhat entertaining.
Open world games are so fucking bland and repetitive and long and by-the-numbers it fucking hurts

Its like what happened with shooters, such potential for guns and concepts and crazy shit and speeds, but all of them turned into brown slow realistic war shooters.
Open world games are similar but nowadays they are all collect, craft, climb the tower and have shitty combat
>>
>>382065993
Movie games. Open world isn't a problem. The issue is that it needs to be dialed back about 10 years. We went too far, too fast. Games aren't ready or capable of having worlds as big as what is generated today. They don't have enough shit to put in there that isn't just copy paste. Open worlds shouldn't be any bigger than Gothic 2 at this point. Also, Metroidvanias should be larger and more intricate while still having sequence breaking. That genre really deserves a revisit by people with an actual budget to throw at it.
>>
>>382069427
I agree. And TLOU is even worse.
>>
>>382068758
This is the same counter I've seen for years and it is also flawed. "Multiplayer is pure gameplay so your argument is invalid". Pure shitty "gameplay" that nobody uses. These are single player games. Their multiplayer is an afterthought just to tick a box that says they have it.
