If you can only play one, 4U is better, but I like lots of stuff in Gen including wep arts, even though the story is quite a bit weaker. Gen is my go to if I want to play one of them, I just like playing with the newest shit.

Gen is better for gameplay

Hunter Arts and hyper monsters suck dick.

MH4U have G rank that alone make it a better game.

Gen is fun but 4U is the peak of the franchise for now.

I started with 4U and then played 3U then played Gen.

I think 4U is the best.
3U is second
and Gen is third.

I say Gen is third because I haven't played it much. The arts confuse me and I've done nothing but fetch quests. There doesn't seem to be an overall story like 4U or 3U.
It's just doing quests and revisiting old areas from old games.

I haven't progressed far into the game to say it's higher up yet, but all I can say is if I started with it first, I may have liked it most.
But 4U is my favorite.

That said, 4U has a fantastic longevity to it. Just stop after getting the clownsuit you want because gearing beyond that is really fucking boring and all you fight are Apex Jho/Rajang.

Arts are technically optional, but you put yourself at a disadvantage by ignoring them. HA were a selling point of the game, and the game is designed and balanced around them. There's a reason hyper monsters have a gorillian HP and the only benefit you receive while fighting them is faster HA charge.
