>Icons for a prototype of Mario Kart Double Dash (or are they still there, just unused?) reveal that Donkey Kong Jr. was slatted to be playable but was replaced with Diddy Kong. This might have had to do with the rare buy-out (If I recall correctly, similar reasons were why DK Jr. was in Mario Tennis N64)

>Kamek has a horn icon in the code for Mario Kart 8. However, he did not appear in either of the DLC packs nor Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

>Hammer Bro and a third Mii outfit have icons in the coding for Mario Kart Wii.

>The Seven Koopalings have sprites in Super Princess Peach, which seems to suggest they were meant to be bosses (Bowser's Vibe Scepter also looks like the magic scepter of the Mushroom Kings, providing further connections). They were scrapped and possibly replaced by the bosses in the final game. These sprites would also be the last time they used their original appearances.

Artwork originally in the digital manual for the Minecraft Super Mario Mashup Pack showed that pigs were originally textured after Midbus from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and the Enderdragon after Hooktail from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. It is unknown why these were changed (to Koopas/Gobblegut) for the final release.

In the game data for Mario Kart Arcade GP, one of the test images is a picture of the Beslan School Hostage Crisis, an event involving the illegal imprisonment of over 1,100 people as hostages and ended with the death of at least 385 people

Final Fantasy III for the DS has plenty of unused japanese text, some of which suggest that the changes were meant to be further-reaching (Such as Saronia having more of a plotline) as well as providing more background/personality of the characters. These It is unknown why the scenes were cut, but it is most likely to keep the game similar to the original.
