Have you ever gotten legit scared when playing a video game?
I don't mean a jumpscare, but legit scared.
>>
>>382051909
Yeah. When playing Amnesia that game had me on edge as I played the whole thing totally blind. Fucking cat brushed up against me I unleashed a walrus bark that could have set off car alarms.
>>
I was playing my switch and got so scared for the (lack of) future of nintendo and its imminent bankruptcy that I couldn't sleep for days
>>
MGS2 legit spooked me.

The first 2 Deadspace games.
>>
When I was little, the Wampas in Shadows of the Empire scared the shit out of me. As an adult though? No. Same goes for movies.
>>
>>382051909
Game would have been amazing if there was more interaction, Sadly it kinda played itself and the final ending required no thinking to get.

I find it very hard to get scared by Aliens movies or games when you are aware it is the weird ass fetish of a creepy old man. It's like game companies trying to use furries as jumpscares
>>
I'm a pretty big pussy, alien isolation and SH3 both spooked me pretty bad

I played Amnesia blind and it wasn't scary at all.

Enemies only show up when you pick up items or complete objectives, and despawn when the music changes.

Terrible, terrible fucking "game."

Amnesia scared me too, until I died for the first time in the sewers when the big asshole is chasing after you. I realized there was 0 consequence to death and I just reappeared almost right where I was. The rest of the game lost its tension.

Shadow of Chernobyl with lab x-18. I was already on edge because the firefight just leading to the place but a poltergeist popped up and I immediately noped and exited the game. Then a week later I powered through it on sheer anxiety and terror.

Been a Metroid fan since getting Metroid 2 on Gameboy and yes, Fusion is looked down upon in the fandom. Sad because it's one of the greatest 2D action games ever and its plot was actually very interesting. I feel it nailed Samus as a character too. Not some Doomguy fans imagine her as but thoughtful, resolute, and slightly jaded.
>>
>>382052751
Wtf....
>>
>>382051909
Yeah, SIlent Hill 2 as a teenager.

PT, because it was so similar to nightmares I had, where rooms would change and spaces were watching and tormenting me.

Nightmare Creatures 2 as a kid.

Zero Tolerance on the Mega Drive as a kid (first 3d game I played).

A lot of early 3d games with black voids and crazy abstracted monsters. Quake, Drakaan, Tomb Raider, etc.

Games with mystery at the beginning like bloodborne, just unsettling, but you're morbidly curious to find the truth and feel sick.
Same with Axiom Verge.
Unsettling atmosphere and the unknown.
I suffer from bad headaches that feel like I'm concussed, so games that make me feel disorientated scare me.

that's not true.
There are specific areas which always have enemies, especially in the second half of the game.

Did you just watch a play through on youtube?
>>
>>382053847
You would think Other M was the first game that "ruined" Metroid by making it linear and plot-based, but no, Fusion did it first. The backlash was so bad, Nintendo was forced to release Zero Mission, literally the very first Metroid, to give the fans exactly what they wanted - more of the same, always and forever.
>>
>>382054141
Ecco because dark water.
Abe's Odessy because I just used to think a lot about Oddworld itself and how bleak and opressive the first game was. I was imagining things on a worse scale than the holocaust, on a hostile alien world where everyhting wants you to die.

the community disliked how direct and railroady it was.

Every level is separated and contained, your next objective is marked on the map, and a friendly NPC gives you direction.

Compare that to Super, where you get some basic narration and a simple objective before you're dumped on the surface of the planet.

There is no waypoint.
No direction.
The only friendly NPCs communicate via actions.

You are alone on a 99.9% hostile world.

What game is this?
>>
Yeah. Icepick Lodge games have been the only titles that really managed to succeed at that with me.
I can get uneasy or creeped out, or very tense (Some sections of Cryostasis, Alien Isolation, good old Penumbra had that effect on me), but it rarely ever translates into actual fear and terror.

That I have really only experienced with Pathologic, The Void, and Knock-Knock. IPL are the only studio that really, really manages to get into my head and screw around something fierce.

Both Pathologic and The Void have one or two specific unique segments where the game just pulls the rug from beneath you. Without wanting to spoil too much about it, it's basically based around the idea of the game establishing "general rules" of both the game itself, and the narrative, and eventually lulling you into a sense of security. All of their games are weird, but eventually you'll reach the point where you start to generally anticipate what can and what cannot happen within it, and get a certain grip on how the more strange elements of it work.

And then they just fucking completely break those rules, and introduce something that makes you question EVERYTHING you thought you knew about the game.

Their last game, Knock-Knock, which was explicitly marketed as a horror game, is different and even weirder. It's very difficult to pinpoint what exactly it is. The game is simple and cartoony, and does not really feel scary on first glance.
The trick it does is that unlike the previous two, Knock-Knock basically makes it IMPOSSIBLE TO LEARN THE RULES. And that has psychological impact.

I'm not the only one reporting this experience. I - like quite a few people I've seen and talked to - never felt particularly scared when playing the game. Just creeped out and confused.
However, I did experience anxiety and panic and even terror when I stopped playing. I also experienced severe nightmares after playing it.
And I'm not alone on this.
It's quite remarkable.

Daily reminder that being scared by a video game ultimately comes down to who you are as a person, not the video game. Fear is a response to the perception of danger. If some part of your mind does not believe you are in danger, even for irrational reasons, you will not feel fear. To be afraid of a video game, there has to be a suspension of disbelief on your part that allows you to feel like something that objectively cannot hurt you is putting you in danger. This is why some people have those wacky (seeming) overreactions to scary game experiences but others don't even flinch. This is why some people will say a game like amnesia is terrifying and others will only say stuff like this >>382052829. >>382053361 is an even better example; with the sense of danger (and consequence) comes fear. Remove the former and you lose the latter.

No game can overcome this, because no game can impose a consequence on the player that is serious enough to maintain a constant state of fear (IF YOU DIE IN THE GAME YOU DIE IN REAL LIIIIIIIIIIFE). A game like dayz is actually probably better at creating fear (or rather anxiety) than most horror games because the consequence of death is a bigger setback, but even that can be warded off by learning how to mitigate the difficulty of the regearing process.

That actually got me. I was stupid kid, and I had been playing the game for a long session, so that made me go "oh shit, I guess I really need to take a break".
Like, I actually thought it was some clock based thing after playing in one sitting for certain amount of time.

Because they have something like this in almost every title. Maybe not CARGO, but it's also possible that that something like this is even there and I just missed it.

The very first time the Undertale demo came out, years before the game was released. Only goes up to the Toriel fight. Anyway

You know the part where you get to her house and it's super cozy and you try to leave through the basement, she stops you a lot, you think something is up? Then she resolves to go down there herself and you follow her. Just 2-3 hallways and it is dead silent, no music, just you walking towards something.

I was dead fucking certain I was about to see a screamer or some other creepypasta meme and my ass was clenched tight.

the 1st silent hill, loads of moments, but the first one is in the school, not even the nightmare'ish version of it, but the normal one...I was absolutely sure that there was something on the main courtyard, absolutely completely sure...then I see a fucking silhouette and I stop on my tracks, whiteout being able to move a fucking inch because I'm scared shitless, I could see what was looking like a head or a feet I don't know, but this thing didn't move either...so after like 5min of just standing there, I decide to move and face whatever it is...

it was a fucking bench seating

The relief was short lived because then I got to the "nightmare" school

There was this one time when I was at college and went to a flea market to windowshop since I had this interest to purchase old videogames I played.
I stumble to one of the old pokemon games from GBC i think? But it was a black cartridge and I was told it was a special edition only released in japan which caught my attention, after the purchase I went back to my apartment and decided to play it, surprisingly it was all in english which was weird but I kept playing, there was a save file and load it just to check how much the person progressed, I think i was in Mt. Silver in front of Red but the music sounded weird with only one pokemon in the team, a Typhlosion level 80 with moves can't normally learn with strange names. I decided to challenge Red but it actually talked and it told me that if you don't reply to this post your mother will die in her sleep.

Not as good as the original but still pretty fucking good, has it's fair share of hype moments and Okabe suffering, some plot twists here and there, nice OST, better view on established characters in certain routes (like Moeka, Daru, Ruka and more), lots of worldline changes with some of them pretty messed up, parts where shit hits the fan like you don't imagine and the origin of Okabe's idea to deceive the universe

No-clipping/glitching outside of the gameworld/free moving cameras that let you move outside the game world terrify me for some reason. Like having the free camera in tf2's spectator mode leave the game arena would give me anxiety.

But as I got older horror games don't do anything for me aside from jumpscares surprising me.

What happened? I can still immerse myself into stories and care for characters and get worried about a character if it seems like something bad will happen to him or get sad when something sad happens.

The way time travel works in that game, sending an object physically back through time is like smooghing it through a 1 centimeter hole, so when it goes back in time it ends up in this jellified state.

Well the gang look up this company and find out that they've been using people as test dummies to send back through time, so their corpses, jellified and all, have popped up in numerous police reports throughout history.

Shortly after looking into said company, the lead character gets that as a text from an anonymous source.

They said it when the Wii U launched.
And now, here you are saying it for the Switch.

>>382074038

As I get older I think "horror" games are less effective at creeping you out than games that try to gut punch you emotionally. like in The Void, there's virtually no story moments that are ~scary~ per se, just kind of upsetting, but the game is constantly changing the rules on you, pressuring you to do things you don't understand, and just when you're starting to feel like you've gotten the hang of something BANG, Sister Death is gone. Fuck. It leaves you feeling worried and distressed, like you don't know how you could have prevented it or what could be taken from you next, and isn't that the real essence of fear?

You have to play it.
HAVE TO, to be able to understand.
But basically in game a buddy sends you a file of a leaked game. You play. And as you play weird shit keeps happening, it spirals out of control, the company is after for playing illegally, and in the end you realize it wasnt a game but you were controling a real think and killing real people. Then you are forced to kill yourself as you stare into that conputer screen playing that game.
All the while bombarding you with sublimal messages and you realize it all when its done.
Then you are tasked with spreading it.
To pass the game on like the character in game passed it on to your character, the company was never actually mad. They got you to spread their evil. The way it tells you to spread it is the same way i got it spread to me IRL
It was just a dumb spook that got me for a few minutes.

>>382075239
waaaaay overhyping it, could've actually been even a little unnerving if the game wasn't so far up its own ass.
The smallest amount of suspense was broken for me on the level where they put you in a cage and say "haha lol you're fucked, try hitting escape. doesn't do anything, you're trapped." I thought this was kinda cool at first, but then I was curious and hit alt+f4, and sure enough it closed. while i get that there are things games can't get around just for the sake of spookiness, they shouldn't try pulling things that just don't work. I'll probably get a couple (you)s from people on the hatetrain, but Undertale did the idea better with the forced-closing and save file stuff.

Any deep water in games, ever. Even if I know there's nothing in the water, it still gives me the spooks. Can't stand swimming/diving in games, or even stupidly bobbing along the top of the water for any longer than absolutely necessary.

Recently I was playing Morrowind on my shitty decade-old work laptop. The settings were very low and still struggled. It was my first playthrough and I had no idea what I was doing.
I killed someone indoors for a quest and thought I had done it discreetly, but when I got outside and started off towards the questgiver, I saw on the very edge of my pitiful draw distance a guard running towards me. I knew I couldn't win against him. Somehow, someway, that choppy little 2 FPS guard in the fog just invoked some deep, awful, sinking fear in me. I ran as fast as I could. Very rarely do I play games with first-person views, and the fact that I couldn't see if I was outrunning him or not without turning around made it so much worse.
It's dumb and I still don't know why it affected me more deeply than actual horror games but after I got away all I could do was close the game for the day.

When I was a boy, this terrified me. The electrical seaweed that, for some strange reason, damaged you.

And then there's the seaweed in the small holes. If you go ANYWHERE near it, it will reach up, grab you, and that's it. Seeing the TMNT struggle in vain before being dragged into it absolutely terrified me as a kid.

It also further cemented my fear of the ocean through Subnautica. Nothing like the fear of open water without being able to see the bottom, being in the pitch black abyss with no light source and alien sounds coming from every direction.
