Nintendo doesn't see a dime of extra revenue from scalpers charging ridiculous amounts. They're just losing potential customers if they were actually intentionally not producing enough. Demand is sky high as it is, the simplest and likeliest explanation is that they genuinely cannot produce enough of them on time. There's nothing artificial about the supply of bullshit classic consoles. They produced a smaller amount of consoles and gave it a smaller price tag to match, because they thought people wouldn't want such a useless product so much in this day and age.
Where Nintendo fucked up was pricing the things so low. If they increased the price so less people would want to buy it, the supply and demand would have been much closer to its equilibrium.

People were still killing eachother for PS3s. The PS3 still got the important third party games. The PS3 still got the major Japanese software. And it was neck to neck with the 360, beating it out in the end. The only thing the PS brand suffered was losing exclusives, but at least they still have the games. Nintendo on the other hand lost third party support entirely with the N64, and Microsoft is losing them slowly.
