Only nintendo knows damn well their stuff will have it's insane demand met, I gave them a pass on the wii and even the wii u and amiibo, there was a chance stuff wouldn't sell. But at this point, the $5 hardware and $2 plastic case&paint making up the NES classic, there was no reason to not have an exponentially larger amount of units ready to go at release, 0 excuse. memory isn't in demand if it's smaller than like 32gb, and to my knowledge the NES classic was a 4gb drive.

The sales numbers aren't lost to the company for hardware, just potential software sales because attach rate is limited by lack of consumer buying power.

Stores should limit purchases per customer by name/account but they can't lose out on sales numbers of the speculative market.

In the case of the SNES or NES Mini, it's not much of a loss since if Nintendo sells out of them, whether a scalper took them all or didn't, they made the numbers sing and pirating doesn't harm a sold out item.
