Its a great thing that zodiac age is based off this version. It takes away all of the tedious things in the vanilla version and improves the game as a whole. It really renders the first game obsolete.

The job combos will be ridiculous. A red mage/black mage now means you can cast oil, use a flame staff, and cast ardor(the strongest fire spell) and fucking destroy everything.

Another favorite is bushi paired with knight. Bushi(new name for samurai) gives ton of magic damage while knight gives tons attack damage. Bushi lets knights wear mystic armor which means with a knight, you can now pair excalibur with white robes(boost holy damage by 50%). All the magic boosting by bushi also increases knight's healing spells by a ridiculous ammount.

The combos get ridiculous the more you think about them.

Just emulate it. It's not worth giving your money to Square Enix.

I love all this freedom to mix classes and exploit the game with crazy combinations. But I also want a challenge to use this on and I heard the game was re-balanced to make it easier.

International zodiac job system, I would say, is easier than vanilla XII,

That being said, I am only talking about the story quests. Side content is still pretty tough.

I have played both a ton, and even though IZJS is a tad easier it is a far more enjoyable game in general.

If you want difficulty, there is a weak mode that you can do where you cannot level up at all. There is also a really tough trial mode where you take on 100 rounds of pretty tough enemies. The very last round is a fight against all judges

One of the best mainline games.
Matsuno is a nice writer but translation is what makes it really good as far as writing goes, it's done by the same people who translated Vagrant Story.
Even Vaan, the shittiest playable character who was forced into the game, ended up getting a fairly good character development and his influence on Ashe was well-done too.
Stellar english voice acting, probably the best vidya dub i've ever heard.
Gambit system allows to automatize a lot of otherwise annoying shit and micromanagement but it's merely an option, nobody stops you from manually inputting all commands.

I've beaten pretty much all of them aside from 2/3/13/15 (played 2/3/13 and just couldn't finish them for whatever reason, basically wasn't interested in 15 at all).

I like 12. I get why some people hate it, but the world was really well put together, and while I thought I'd hate the combat I actually didn't mind it. I understand why it's polarizing though.

I've beaten every single final fantasy multiple times, and I'd say 12 is up there. The gameplay loop is fun enough and it's what's going to keep you going, because the story isn't that great. The characters are all kind of bland and the story meanders quite a bit. It feels like the ending was sort of rushed as well. But running around killing things is fun. Overall, I'd say it's in my top 6 for mainline games in the series.
