why was borderlands 2 so much worse than the first one?
>>
>>382048114
The gameplay was fun but the atmosphere and writing were MUCH worse.
>>
>>382048114
It really wasn't. BL1 was so edgy it couldn't even pretend to be ironic about it and every environment looked and played identically. Mute 2 and grab some buddies and it's an easy 9/10.
>>
>>382048376
>9/10
You're being way too generous. I agree that muting the dialogue helps a lot, but even with enemies it's super repetitive and all the areas are needlessly huge with nothing to do.
>>
>>382047982
I'm so fucking glad Anthony Burch isn't relevant anymore
>>
>>382048560
>needlessly huge
I like it because I like sniping. Hate shit like Mass Effect 2 where you have a sniper but you only get to use it within a hundred yards of the enemy.
>>
>>382048376

>just mute the audio of this audio-visual interactive entertainment, its a 9/10!

>>382048114

Because the first one took itself somewhat seriously

BL2 just went full maymay XD humor

>>
>>382048114
Borderlands 1 : lack of writing and dialogue
Borderlands 2 : excess bad writing and dialogue
>>
>>382048114

Handsome Jack is the only likable character in the game except for maybe Tiny Tina and Mr. Torgue.
>>
I recently re-played through Borderlands 2.

It made me remember a few things.

First, I think it's just very obviously a "video game". Like, that sounds like a weird and obvious tautology, but it's the best way I can describe it. It's not trying to be realistic, it's not trying to be anything other than "Get guns, shoot stuff".

Now, yeah there's a shitload of pop-culture jokes, but those never even bothered me. Hell, even that one part in Dragon Keep about "gamer guy" stuff is only a few minutes of cringe, but I don't think the writing really gets in the way of enjoying the game.

My real problem? It's short, and could use more variety. Like, even the entire swathe of DLC is all just "do a few little story quests before getting to a big arena boss" and then you have the same game on higher bullet-sponge difficulty.

Would I take a 4th game in the series? Sure, if it can find a balance between BL1 and BL2, have tons of interesting content, and just be more dumb videogame fun.

nah thats too much for me personally. I think their screaming is way over the top.
Also it makes other character and the setting in general appear less sane and serious.

Pre Sequel: Excessive bad writing AND lack of meaningful content. Third time truly is the charm.
>>
>>382048114
Unsatisfying guns. Even the crappiest Tediore shotguns in 1 were still fun to use because they sounded good and dismembered the natives.
Every gun in 2 is anaemic.

The writing isn't even the first part of Borderlands 2. The scaling is the worst I've ever seen in a video game.

>>
>>382051441
Handsome Jack was great, but I feel like he popularized Gearbox's current trend of "snarky memey one liners for every single line of dialogue" that's dominant in all their work since the BL2 DLC.

They tend to forget that Jack and the story as a whole got pretty dark at times.

I wish the base game wasn't so ass. It's like a worse dark souls in that regard, except instead of going from okay to good, BL2 goes from boring and draining to decent game with DLC.
I'd criticize the voice acting but it's been said enough that the dialogue is awful
>>
I remember finding a shotgun in BL1, I think it was Torgue. It was so low level, but it had SUCH HUGE firepower that I kept it even though I was like 30 levels above it. It took me so long to find a shotgun with a higher firepower than it.
Kinda sad that nothing like that ever happened in BL2. It was such a small thing but I thought it was really cool.

Enemies with 10000hp aren't fun.
>>
>>382048114
Because they'll never recapture the mystery of being on a strange alien planet searching for a vault that you aren't even sure exists for a decent chunk of the game. They can improve the gameplay, and IMO they did with later installments, but they'll never get that particular dopeness back again. I feel like the pre-sequel went in the right direction and sort of did its own thing. Also truly good weapons were too rare (sort of addressed in a relatively recent patch) and: >>382051501

The way in which Roland died was dumb as hell.

Did they change dismemberment and the like in 2? I could have sworn you could destroy heads with high-damage criticals in the first game. Now I'm getting miniature blood explosions and their bodies look completely find.

Granted, I could be wrong, it's been ages since I pirated the first game. Only got 2 off steam two days ago because it was so cheap.

BL2 unironically had fun writing, people say it's shit now because they overused it AFTER borderlands. Its the seinfeld effect...a novel product loses its charm for future generations because every other product after it copied the formula.

BL1 was fun and a somewhat new concept, but the balance was atrocious and so late game wasn't very exciting. Reminder you're literally 100% invincible with Lilith because the retards didn't add a cooldown reduction cap so you could actually enter phasewalk, heal yourself to 100% and have it's cooldown restored BEFORE the fucking effect ends
>>
>>382056642

This looks like one of those "modern videogame" edits that /v/ makes jokingly.
>>
>>382057627

The DLC is just shit like weapons or paint packs, minor stuff. The only thing that matters are the "expansions" that add more characters

Look for memelands in the archive.
Borderlands 2 was not well received on /b/ back then.

Yeah Gearbox handles DLC like ass and constantly reminds you of it, Borderlands 2 was the first time I ever preordered and bought the season pass and didn't get all the DLC.
>>
>>382058092
Likely sequel bait. Either for a season 2 or dlc for borderlands 3 as playable characters.
I just wished Gearbox would die so the franchise would go to someone decent.

Played BL1 after BL2.

I felt that BL1 was much more...dull, I guess? Like, a very large portion of the areas you visited were dry wastelands that got tiresome to keep looking at. And the General Knox DLC was also an annoying slog because there was no fast travel and you had to drive across the same highways over and over to get where you needed.
Add to that the fact that the character skills were less exciting than BL2, it made the game feel like a generic shooter. And of course this goes without saying, but the final boss was shit.

tl;dr
BL2 was full of memes, but terrain was more varied, character skills were more fun, and unique gun effects were cooler. Just an overall more entertaining experience.
>>
>>382057841
>BL2 unironically had fun writing
I disagree. It has it moments but when its bad, its atrocious. I first played 2 and then 1. Even during 2, despite seeing this sort of game or writing for the first time, I could see that for every good moment, there other 2 other bad ones because Burch is a terrible writer.
We could talk about how he makes respawn non-canon, despite there even being a mission acknowledging it as something in-world.
We can talk about how the best thing in 2, Jack, is so great mostly due to the voice actor who improvised several lines and gave Jack life.
We can talk about how it seems Lilith is supposed to be a hero or at least sympathetic but comes across as the complete opposite.
My hope is they realize that Lilith is now hated, justify it by saying her Siren powers have twisted her, plus what happened with Roland and now she's the baddy.

Borderlands 1 is stale white bread that's been left out all day.
Borderlands 2 is pic related.

>>
>>382059028
I hear people like to take that quest and never complete it to keep the silly names.
>>382059036
Yep. No fast travel. As I said, I played BL2 first so that was a major buttpain for me. Had to run across Ned's island so much I ended up memorizing the path I needed to take when I was only halfway through the quests.
>>
I played only 2 and found the gameplay good enough that i didn't mind about the dialogue. I mean, it was no masterpiece but I don't think think the script took away anything from the experience.

I suspect it also is because I'm easy to please and have never really held big expectations for any games' writing so maybe if you don't take that part too seriously you may be able to enjoy it more.

What annoys me is that the lore and the possibilities are there. The idea of sending miners to a different planet, company goes bankrupt and abandons its miners, they go mad, companies sell guns so that the problem sorts itself out.
