HL3 won't be made because it's not profitable for Valve.

Steam store and marketplace produce so much dosh, investing into making an actual game would not net enough of a ROI to bother.

They've tried selling boxes in a single-player game before with Portal 2 and it failed miserably, so that ain't happening with HL3.

Breen speeches and HL2 storytelling are, to me at least, work of art. I unironically use them as references when I want to write something.

They have good writers for TF2 and Portal too, but it doesn't have the exact same feeling.
On the other hand, most of Valve titles have the same kind of stories and humour (and I fucking love their way of writing).

I used to think this but recently I turned away from it after playing proper core shooters. Half-Life (2) is a watered down Quake and everything it did, older level-by-level shooters did better. The only reason we remember it so fondly is because these games came out during a time where the average (FPS) game quality was taking an absolutely insane nosedive.

D44M or Wolfenstein TNO kick the shit out of HL(2), and I say that as a man entirely blind to graphics. The gameplay was just flat out better. Times have changed and game makers are finally finding their way again.

Steam is the problem. As long as Valve makes more money from Steam than they would with Half-Life 3, it's never coming out.

Stardock had Galactic Civilizations, then they made Impulse, which was a good competitor to Steam on a technical level, especially since it also offered non-game software long before steam did. Eventually, they realized that the time and resources they had to spend to maintain Impulse was taking away from their game and software development work, so they sold off Impulse to... GameSpot, I think.

GOG now has their own client, which they've made optional. I think that this is a good client, especially since the company doesn't have to split their attention between running that and developing games of their own.

Valve let some team of modders sell and make money off of black mesa, Valve is letting some literally who dudes make a comic set in the HL universe, both of which are completely out of house and they have no say in it, because they dont care

Valve is focused entirely on gimmicky VR, and its not just Half Life that suffered for it, TF2 is down to a handful of people working on it and its likely that the only thing keeping up DOTA2s support is the hat money and Icefrog pushing for it HARD behind the scenes, and despite there being a market for coop shooters any hint of a new L4D is non existent

They're rolling in money, and probably think they're invincible. I mean they may as well be, they thought they could get away with paid mods, and the worst thing that happened was that Gabe got blown out on Reddit and they lost a million dollars, but what the fuck do reddit votes mean in the greater scheme of things, and how much money did Valve make the next day?

I figured that Valve wouldve done pretty much ANYTHING ELSE at this point: put actual effort into the Steamboxes, the next iteration on the Steam controller, move over to publishing games.

But instead they seem content to play around with VR, expensive peripherals that really can only work on ALREADY expensive computers, that only work with $50 or $60 games that range from shovel ware to stuff that looks cool but only has at most 4 hours of content.

Greenlight was a terrible idea, and opened the flood gates to shovelware games pumped out of unity or RPGmaker and sold for 5 dollars, but instead of reintroducing the human element that kept garbage out, they're using more computerized algorithms to keep an eye out for "fake games", so I doubt Valve will change

Valve is an online distribution host and nothing else. They don't make games anymore, or even content for their games, that cuts into profits. They let the community make the content and moderate the content. It's why Valve tried to monetize mods, so they could try and squeeze a little more money out of their community, and it's why they didn't moderate Steam Greenlight or the forums or have any customer service. They are a hosting company, "Valve" is just a server farm in Bellevue now.

This isn't how you write Half-Life, though. You start with radical new concepts for linear cinematic FPS gameplay and setpieces and then write the story around those. And, when beginning to write, you have to start with a strong setting (a setting that is a character itself). And the ending has to be open enough to allow for a potential sequel. You can't definitively close all plot threads / eliminate all threats.

Deciding on chapter structure is basically the last thing you do, and it's not even necessarily required.
