How so? Did they re-implement the random generation? I haven't played in a while, but the removal of the random creatures and bosses killed this game for me. You can count the number of creatures in this game on one hand.

At one point in time it was good. Mobs were unique new worlds felt like new worlds. Then the devs in thier infinite wisdom decided that hand crafting mobs and terrain pieces was not worth thier time and effort. However instead of using pre existing assets and works that were simply brilliant in thier design. They scrapped it all and fell to the dark gods of procedural generation. What was once a bright and vibrant game one to be considerd worthy competion with Terraria was murdered by its own devs.

Its kind of shocking to say the a pre alpha game was better in its early stages than it is now but ask anyone who was there in the beginning and they will tell you the same. The only thing even making it even remotely enjoyable is the robust moddling community. Some of the most popular mods dedicated to reverting the decisions of the dev team.

As someone who stuck with the game in the hopes that something good would happen;

>Early beta was 10/10
>Then they removed beta content, changed everything, and planned a story mode
>STORY. In a fucking sandbox game.
>Cute portraits for the dopey granny and the woman who dies in the start, then they get ugly changes and ruin their looks
>Story is ass, clearly written without thought of plotline and progression
>NPCs are worthless, you didn't need them at all
>Sandbox elements ruined due to random monsters being nerfed hard, "unique" monsters existing in multiple galaxies, and so on
>No 500 variants of dirt anymore, either

At least mechs are a cool thing, but CLEARLY unfinished. Loot is shit, crafting requirements suck, and the available parts are very limited. Still mad that Fatal Circuit and the Jelly boss didn't survive and get updated into actual bosses.

After all these years and broken promises it's still pretty mediocre.

The fact that an older game that still has constant updates like Terraria is a hell of a lot better than Starbound can ever be should ward you off from buying it.

Keep in mind during the point in time that SB hit it's stride was a time when Terraria wasn't nearly as fraction good as it is now. You have to remember time periods here.

I won't say Frackin' Universe is worth it until it removes sprites taken from other games and actually starts getting creative with its custom content past the planet biomes, because the weapons/armor/etc you get from FU are mostly reskins of things that already exist or don't really show off just how much things can actually be modded.

Also the fact that 99% of servers can't be joined with it, but that's another problem altogether.

>>
Used to have good porn.
>>
Here's why the story is bad:

>The Ark
This huge object that apparently nobody has ever attempted deciphering exists in a place where everyone congregates. The keys are in places only each race knows.
>Floran
Obvious clues lead to a ceremonial hunting ground. One that outsiders are able to join, even. Go in there, kill a weak spider, and you're the new champion. You just earned a free plant loli.

>Hylotl
Read a book, read a book, read a motherfucking book. Hylotl are pacifist warriors who nearly went extinct because of Floran hunting, and lost one of their libraries. This one makes the most sense since it's a legit relic that few knew about. You get a lanky Hylotl that joins your research.

>Avian
You raid a fucking museum that also happens to be a temple. Wow, special. You get a big bird that looks nothing like an Avian as an NPC, too.

>Apex
The most opportunities to be cool, yet the most opportunities missed. You infiltrate the headquarters of Big Brother, and destroy his Andross hologram. You also get an elitist military ape woman.

>Glitch
I can't explain this without it being dumb as shit. You save a lunatic Glitch from cultists attacking a tiny keep. What the fuck even is this?

>The Ruin
You go to a planet-sized monster, dig through its skin and body, and beat up its heart until the creature explodes. Sounds cool, right? Unfortunately, it's the exact opposite, and entirely anticlimactic.

It's like they found a bunch of ideas, hastily put them together, didn't even think about building up each zone, and called it a day.

Terraria is the better game, but it's also not a game I can play regularly. I love it to death but I'm not autistic enough to delude myself into thinking the mods are even remotely good, so I start a new playthrough when a patch drops and that's about it.
>>

The key word there is slowly.

It's improving, but at such a pace that it's kind of saddening.

I assume most of Chuckle is working on Wargroove now, and Starbound is mostly a side project.
>>
>>382045895
It's still in disaster state, as far as I'm concerned. They removed way too much and added way too little. Hell, they added a functioning Visual Novel system to the game before fixing bugs and returning things they took out for no reason. A fucking visual novel only used in one tiny random encounter. I played it to see what it was like, and holy shit I'd rather read a ten page book written by an amateur on Deviantart than ever touch that shitty VN again.

It's literally the ONLY even remotely playable Terraria clone, which is frankly nuts.

I'm not defending Starbound, either - the other clones are just that fucking bad. Edge of Space, Crea, Planet Centauri, they're all unplayable garbage.
>>
>>382046410
No.
Terraria.

You won't find a good Terraria stand in. If you want one, you're out of luck. If you want a game with similar mechanics, don't compare it to Terraria. Terraria has many flaws, but there's no Terraria-like game that's a good stand in. You want games that are like Starbound, like Planet Centauri, but even then they just don't stand up well against the competition.

Terraria can be more described as a boss rush game for most of it, it's more efficient in what it does, and when you achieve something the payoff is stupendous and makes your cock rock fucking hard as you're bathed in loot.
Consistently good content, and as the game progresses it branches off in interesting ways with its item variety and so on.
It can be a bit of a slog at the beginning but that makes getting movement based items and becoming more powerful that much more rewarding, if you compared the start of the game and the end game you'd think they were different game bar the artstyle holding it together coherently.
Also I figured out how to play the game without having to do any fucking tedious mining, but it's a bit more difficult without the mining.

Space Encounters have a few enemies, all of which can be sniped from across the screen without aggroing them. The loot you can find is insanely limited, too; 1-4 mech parts and a fucking truck load of Copper, Silver, or Gold. There's also three furniture items that can be found rarely, but only one is cool; the Lunar Lander. There's one Encounter with a USMC derelict, and there's a creature in it that you can capture that's only found there. It's a bio weapon made by Apex specifically to fuck over the USMC because they asked the Apex for bio weapons. It's in the books you find, so I didn't make it up; it's just that dumb.

Stations and random ships also lack loot.

This game isn't a bad game, but Terraria blows it out of the water. If they were more focused on making the game a good experience and not on story, it would've been much better than it is today, which I would say is "Mediocre." Mostly because of how bland the combat is, story being in the game, being able to deny upgrading your ship and things like that. Again, the game isn't bad, but Terraria destroys it as a game.

Building stuff in Starbound is better though.

>>382052397
This is pretty much the best way to put it. There's a reason people who play Terraria generally build a hyper-efficient commie block and call it a day when it comes to building shit, there's too much actual game play that all you ever build are functional arenas. The building tools you have aren't particularly good, either.

And while building in Starbound is significantly better, the main problem that arises is that you're essentially building for no reason. You can build a cool space base with elevators and railways and shit, but you can't really do anything with it. That's probably why the game enjoys enduring popularity with degenerate furry ERPers.

If anyone likes Starbound + Lewd. Here is a discord for the /vg/ server

I hate the Apex and Glitch fully upgraded ships, the Apex one is ugly as shit and the rooms in the Glitch one are arranged in such a way that I cant really get the ship to look how I want
>>
>>382052865
Do tell.
>>
>>382045201
You going to mention any information to validate this 'fact?'
I've enjoyed Starbound more than Terraria so far and i also play with FU. It's tedious but that's what i like.

Gonna take a total shot in the dark here

Do any of you play Frackin Universe, and if you do, have you found a Precursor biome anywhere?

I've been to like 10+ planets trying to find one

Is the mod still updated?

holy shit

>played terraria first and heard nothing but "starbound is just a cheap imitation"
I ended up getting starbound over the summer sale and I'm really enjoying it, both are great for their own reasons.

If you haven't played Frackin, you really need to

It makes the base game about 100x more enjoyable

Space stations are actually useful for making your space laboratories, and certain machines will require power to function. I've got several solar panels and bigass batteries powering all my hydroponics trays and liquid centrifuges here.
>>
>>382054574

It also has some really, really, REALLY nice mech mods made just for it

The modular mech system is one of the best things to happen to this game in a damn long time

did you get attacked by candleja
>>

It's one of the few times I've regretted buying a game.

you're supposed to cut off after saying candlejack, not beforehand you dumb a
>>
>>382054786
aw fuck that's dope. When u say mods? you mean more mods i'd have to download?
I still haven't found any mech parts that can withstand a bunch of the biomes.

>working on gathering things for genes for the dope tinker armor.
>i need a better weapon. lvl6 spear, 32dps
>>
>>382041659
cancer made by a lying cunt. avoid.
>>
Can you build custom ships yet?
>>
>>382052967
You can build for Crew Members, but here's the problem on that:

>Quests for Tenants
>Not getting what Crew Member you want
>In the end, they're near useless

So yeah, you can make stuff look cool, and there's supposed to be a reward, but it doesn't suffice.
>>
>>382041659
Chucklefuck's Starblunder is an undeniable disaster of broken promises and should serve as warning to any who would consider backing any kind of crowdfunded or early access game.

Not in the base game, but it's easy to mod

The new space station blocks let you make some pretty neat custom ships, even the ones you can explore in the base game look great and they have no new assets like pic related
>>
>>382054574
This. I haven't played in a while, but exploring the weirder biomes was cool. Like the apocalyptic planets and the ones made completely out of metal where it's raining fire. Good times.
>>
Starbound is samey as fuck, chucklefucks killed a puppy, and worse yet they had a SA secret forum, but holy fucking shit Terraria shitposting is just as bad.

>MMO tier drop rates on items
>Small number of mods
>Melee quickly devolves into ranged/magic
>No way to have a peaceful world without the threat of some random event killing off a NPC or something unless you use TEdit
>Arena building
>A really simple art style (some people like it but shieeet)
>Fantasy setting (second verse same as the first)

You're up there with 12 year old minecraft players with how hard you suck on Red's rocket

.t someone who beat the moon lord and still can't be assed to finish Starbound's shitshow of a story
>>
>>382055056
Tbh I use a mod that makes mechs have infinite energy and can withstand all biomes, but they can take damage. I use a somewhat weak body (for looks) so it seems kinda balanced.

Some of the planets get fucking bananas on the enemy spawns, where even a modded mech can get overwhelmed.
>>
>>382055451
Can I get a list of things they promised?
>>
>>382041659
incredibly boring and repetitive
if you've seen each biome/planet type once, you've seen it all and the only thing left to do is build shit
>>
>>382055670
1. A good game.
>>
>>382055663
you get those lag spikes too? is that from FU?
Honestly though, mods like that, why not just use the console to cheat? Guess it ain't so bad on a fun character.

>>382055670
bag of dicks. so far i'm pleased.
>>
>>382049007
This is how I feel. I played it day 1 in alpha and it sucked from the get go.
>>
>>382055873
keep going faggot.
>>
>>382047854
>fidget spinner mod
Fuck that gay shit, Terraria has the OG autismatoy, the yo-yo. AND it's not even a mod.
>>
>>382055914

My mech can still get destroyed fast in FU

Raining fire planets and robots flying all over the sky (usually in the same planet to boot) can destroy a mech very quickly. I saw a planet almost get Ikaruga tier.

>you get those lag spikes too? is that from FU?

Dude this game is HORRIBLY optimized, its not just FU doing it

One of my friends only got solid 60 FPS after he upgraded his conputer with a 1070 with 8Gb VRAM. There's no way this game should be running as bad as it does.
>>
>>382055670
Hey you remember when they said every race would have a unique prologue?
>>
>>382056662
Is that it?
>>
Fuck, the webm spamming shill has returned.
>>
>>382056898
>He's still mad

I always liked doing wacky shit in this game

Like the time I made it rain giant mushrooms
>>
>>382057314
>my secret fantasy is getting bombarded by a rain of dicks
>>
>>382055670
What was promised
>2014 release
>unique racial abilities like Hyotl having the ability to breathe underwater
>a diverse procedurally generated universe to explore
>towns, cities with unique inhabitants
In reality
>2016 release
>unique """biomes""" are a rainbow of pastel soils and backdrops
>monsters are literally copy-pasted body parts with random attacks and AI behavior
>defining racial features cut out because chucklefuck couldn't make them fun without trivializing progression

It is fucking astonishing how Terraria had so much more character after going through three years of Starbound.
>>
Alright I found the promises myself, on the original kickstarter for Starbound.

There were three milestones to unlock if the developers reached a certain target, the first was $500,000 which unlocked the first stretch goal which was the Novakid , the second $750,000 which unlocked the second stretch goal the Fossils. and $1,000,000 was the last stretch goal which unlocked the Starter Pets.

From what I've played so far, it seems like all the promises from the kickstarter were met. The pet is annoying and that's one promise I wish they broke desu.
>>
>>382057691
You're just complaining about HOW things were implemented, not listing broken promises. The only criticism I see here is the unique racial features.
>>
>>382058304
Those are broken promises. All of that shit was promised at one point or another during chucklefucks talks with the community.

There was literally a /starboundgeneral/ where people relentlessly bitched about this shit for YEARS.
>>
>>382057715

What I dislike about fossils and pets are how useless they are

They're just decorative objects. They even had a T-rex monster that they either scrapped or haven't implemented yet. I'd love to ressurect some dinos via SCIENCE to use as battle pets on planets.
>>
>>382045057
I think that most terraria fans thought that Starbound was going to be a worthy successor for terraria since it had a long time without updates.

Many looked forward to it and some even supported their kickstarter. Instead we got an unfinished game that had less content than vanilla terraria
>>
>>382056420
not him but it's not even the FPS drops that confuse me the most, it's the lag spikes
even if you play singleplayer it lags as if you were on an online server because the game can't handle too many things happening at once, I already died a few times because the damage I was doing to an enemy took too much time to register
I genuinely don't understand how you can fuck that up
>>
>>382049089
NEver fucking forget. That was a good time.
