People consider Smash it's own thing. It's a fighting game in that there are characters and they fight each other. No one claims its the same genre as what we typically think of as "fighting games", like SF, Tekken, Blazblue, etc. That being said, Melee has more depth than any of those games.

it actually has quite a few mechanics interacting with eachother and a very specific flow you've got to get into
