That's the good part about starfox 2

It wasn't 3 paths that are the same every time you replay it. There's a map with random adversaries and events that change over time, and you react to what the game throws at you. It has good potential for replay value. I just hope the actual levels are good, because they were ass in the leaked alpha.

The planets and battlecruisers are really barebones. You activate switches and go in, or a cutscene does it for you. You unlock a door, destroy the core and leave. The planets definitely needed to be traditional on-rails levels, and the battlecruisers need an approach challenge

That was definitely the case with Star Fox Zero. I have never felt what you describe more clearly than with that game. All the actual Star Fox stuff was phoned in as fuck, and obviously being used just as a vehicle to deliver the dual screen gimmick.
Launching with Star Fox Guard makes it all the more painfully apparent that the focus is the controller and not the property.

I'm not really sure what you're talking about with F-Zero though. The original perhaps showcase the potential of mode 7 background layer manipulation, but aside from that it's been a very pure and distinctly un-gimmicky racing series.

Unless they made all the character designs simpler and shittier sometime between the beta online and the full version no one has seen, I suspect this is just a case of them making modern official art for the game and not putting much care into it.
