That means that they don't have extra stock of them hanging around (if distributors can't move them, they won't purchase them from nintendo, they sit in a nintendo store house waiting for an order), they can say that they sold out in X hours/days which looks really good to investors, and they get a return on their investment in producing them quicker. Also, if there is constant demand where retailers can't keep them in stock, then retailers won't need to mark the price down to move units to make room for other inventory. As we know, nintendo has a reputation for never lowering their price on products, so any price cut that a retailer has to make will hurt their bottom line more, and make them less likely or order as much from nintendo in the future.
