It's a separate "DLC" with its own multiplayer and a campaign. I consider the campaign and core battle gameplay actually better than vanilla M&B (9th century combat with shield, javelins, and light armor), it's just the fact that there are already a lot of good free modules you can download. Still, ship battles are pretty cool.

Still a fantastic dlc that breathes a lot of life into the game. The campaign has such a huge sense of scale, with actual drama and shit. It reminds me of Braveheart the movie with the twists and betrayals and stuff.
