Symphony of the Night or Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

SotN is just...kind of perfect to me. Maybe a bit easy but I like it as a leisurely game so this isn't a negative for me. Later games were fantastic but something unquantifiable in SotN has never quite been captured since.

Defiance was the last and best game in LoK for me but unfortunately it ended on a cliffhanger that will never be resolved.

The whole point of Defiance was that Kain was trying to save Nosgoth and himself. He had been given a spark of madness from birth and it had guided him to do terrible things throughout his life and both he and Nosgoth suffered for it.

The ending of Defiance, with him holding the Purified Reaver, his mind cleared of Nupraptor's insanity and a clear understanding of the true enemy, implied he could prevent the world's decay and that the next leg of his journey would be acting on the hope Raziel gave him with his sacrifice.

They had another game already in development that ended up getting canned. It was very clearly intended to be something of a penultimate chapter with the ending bringing Kain from antihero to villain to hero.

And you are missing the point. Old pokemon had certain, consistent styles (like the Dragonball Z eyes, certain ways of drawing edges and limbs) and that art style went completely out the window in the newer games.

BW2 is really good, but saying it's the peak of the series is just wrong. It's just insanely good coming from the lackluster BW1 which had a shorter postgame than even Sun/Moon.

Gen 4 is the peak for me with the introduction of the Phys/Spec split, which really changed up the metagame.

BW wasn't that good, but BW2 had the "mature" story people have always asked for, the BEST battle facility there will ever be in a Pokemon game, as well as a ton of other neat features such as medals (achievements).

To fully enjoy BW2s story? Yeah, I'd say give BW a quick playthrough.
But all the other features? No need to play BW.
Unless you want the flashbacks and the ability to catch N's Pokemon.

Also, BW forces on you that garbage Pokedex, easily the worst designs in the entire franchise.
