I bought this game in 2014, but it on my backlog, and never went back to it because in the time I was playing other games I slowly became an achievement wanting faggot, and the Steam version sadly has none.
>>
>>382001714
Yes.
160 hours, but never finished it.

>>

Get burned out halfway through, got annoyed that I can beat ridiculous optional bosses, got annoyed that some classes expect you to grind for 500 hours (Ordainer).
Also manage to get a character stuck in a shit class in one of my playthroughs which made me start over too.

I think the only way I'll ever finish this is if they invent brain bleach.
>>
>>382001714
No matter how complex and rewarding the gameplay is the story is generic as it can get, having to endure a mediocre story in a RPG is wasted effort, you can ignore story in other genres like fighters, shooters, action, etc, but not in a RPG.

5 times. 100%d it twice.

When you get a handle on the mechanics, like know them inside and out, you can absolutely blitz through the game.

There's just no transparency. If you could see the stats and character progression clearly then you'd notice it's not complicated; just obscured.

>JRPG actively punishes you for getting in fights
I found myself running away for the vast majority of the game. Wasn't very fun.
>>
>>382002720
Nonsense.
A lot of JRPG have mediocre/bad stories and most of them don't have good gameplay either.
TLR is one of the better JRPGs.
>>
Got all the achievements on the 360 and it wasn't a good time.
>>
>>382004258
Game does not punish you. The thing you're referring to was a bug in the original XBOX version of the game and was been patched out of that version fairly quickly. If you've played it on any other platform you've never experienced that bug. If you've updated the game on XBOX even once or bought it basically any time a few months after launch you've never experienced that bug.

There's absolutely no reason to avoid fights in the game. Enemies get stronger as your battle rank rises, but so do you. Eventually enemies stop getting stronger, but your rank continues to rise and you get even stronger.

I was on PC so that bug wasn't there, I just saw that enemies were growing much stronger than I was / could with the gear I could buy at shops. In 7 fights I remember some dinosaur things going from doing 20% of my hp per attack to 40-50% or something ludicrous like that.

I've been looking for an RPG recently so i'll give it another go. Any super important things to know about?

>>
>>382005228
I don't remember the exact mechanics, but I'm pretty sure that in order to slow the enemies' stat growth and maximize your own, you want to fight as big a group of monsters you can at once.

More a mid-game thing but a lot of sidequests are locked out after you complete a sewer dungeon, though I'm pretty sure that the game warns you about it.

I see this game a lot but I'm curious about it.
What do you do?
Is there customisation/loot and gear? A variety of it?
Much point in doing non MQ stuff?
Is it fun to just explore the world?
Any RP stuff like player housing, romance, etc?

I remember some parts being tough as shit but I still completeled it while trying to clear every sidequest (which of course didn't work, because you need a guide to even find all of them)

beaten this game when i was 16 too,the game itself isnt as hard as everyone says, its just that they fucking suck, you dont really need a guide to beat it
>>
>>382001714
>Played the demo, wasn't fun.
>>
>>382007271
That pic is just examples of people exaggerating. Yes, a lot of mechanics about character progression is not observable. Everything else is just people complaining that the characters they WANT to bring are not the characters that possess they skills they NEED to win.
>>
Who here also played the laggy Xbox360 version when it came out and got it again for PC?
>>
Played this 3 times, fucking best game.
>>
>>382007271
its not, pretty much the same as the dark souls meme, yes, some bossfights are hard, but the game is so fun in his mechanics that its totally worth it and by no mean impossible, i played it blind, without a guide, and i never got stuck (except by the gates of hell, but its just a matter of patience and some tactics.
>>
>>382005153
i fucked him up good on my first try.
i had a save just before his fight and since he's considered hard enough for you to make this post i tried again and still fucked him up.
why is he considered such a hard boss?
honestly the only boss that OUT FUCKING SKILLED me was the twin bitches that i tried to beat for over 20 hours and holy shit how happy i was that i finally beat them to to some amount of skill and a big amount of luck.
>>
>>382001714

I got to maybe the second quest or something. Bought it on a whim, later found out that it was a fucking insane RPG and I got overwhelmed while trying to orient myself.
>>
>>382007879
>try to beat him exactly 18 TIMES
>go back on another save and grind 2 FUCKING BR's ONLY
>beat him first try after 2 FUCKING BR's ONLY

its like the game wanted you to be at least that fucking battle rank level before beating him
>>
>>382001714
Is it worth picking up on 360?
>>
>>382008241

don't know, all I know is PC version has rebalanced difficulty and doesn't stutter
>>
>>382008241
The PC version has a lot of improvements over it, so I'd recommend that one.
>>
>>382008241
No stay away from it. I'm this >>382007689 anon so I know what I'm talking about.

The PC version is so much better you almost won't believe it. The Xbox360 is really choppy with tons of slowdowns regularly. The PC version not only fixes this, but adds fast forward for combat and a few party customization options for your party.
>>
>>382002319
>mfw have started like five playthroughs but not finished any of them

>>382005540
You're on the right track.
The ironclad rule for TLR is that every battle you fight should be fought BIG and FAST.
The safest standard to go by is:
>Turns to win <= No. of Enemy Squads
To maximize stat gains but minmize enemy growth.

>>382005153
This guy's only a (literal and figurative) gate on the console versions.
>balance is boring and shit because there's like 40 characters with unique voice acting, models, and more potential growth/diversity in what they can do, but you can only use like 4-5 of them at any given time
>because of that you're forced to use the utter trash free soldier units that are pigeonholed into a single thing at a sub-par level
>retarded BR scaling means you're probably fucked unless you played a minmaxing game from the first minute of your playthrough
>it's part of a triple-boss gauntlet where you cant adjust your squads in-between or save

>>382008241
For the love of god do not. It's objectively inferior in EVERY way.
>>
>>382008474

i really didn't have had such an issue with them, it's mostly due to the fact that it surprised you with removing the rest of your party.

Enemy scaling was too fucked and the characters weren't particularly interesting. Fun for the first dozen or so hours, but that boss fight against the hulk and blade lady was impossible.

Fuck those cunts. I didn't have your perseverance so I quit, though.

i got this game because I like SaGa games and heard this was basically a SaGa game in all but title.
I was a little turned off when I found that it wasnt really so and the beginning is extremely closed off.
Does the game get better later on? I still cant use the blacksmith, which is stupid.
>>
>>382002720
>you can ignore story in other genres like fighters, shooters, action, etc, but not in a RPG.
what a retarded statement. Of course you can, not everything has to be fucking Bioware or Planescape Torment. There are many great RPGs that have minimal story. You should play a SaGa game, great series with minimalist stories.
>>
>>382006876
I'd recommend Minstrel Song desu but thats just my opinion
Minstrel is my favorite jrpg
>>
>>382002482
I've never played the game, but damn that's a great female character design.
>>
