it's amazing how much silly TECHNOLOGY Nintendo managed to pack into their very first, modern open world game. It's like playing something out of Hideo Kojima's head at times.
>>
I keep forgetting that Nintendo owners are 3 gens behind everyone else and find basic physic puzzles impressive.

>basic physic
you mean basic on PC back in 2005, yet almost totally nonexistent on modern console games, because of focus on GRAPHIX + weak ass CPUs?

Not to mention the game has tons of very fine-tuned simulations that most devs wouldn't even want to try tackling in their games. Even less so in dynamic open-world titles like this.
>>
>>382001079

Fun doesn't always make for a good game.
>>
You guys should check out Just Cause 2. It will blow your fucking minds.
>>
I can't wait to replay the game on hard mode now that I am actually much more familiar with the game and how to exploit it.
It's great fun though. The game really wants you to break it. So now that I know how, I will.

>>382001428
Good thing BotW is fun AND has great gameplay + atmosphere.
>>
>>382001976
They probably take more time trying to bypass doing the shrine normally than doing it this way. Trial and error. Makes for cool things you can watch and technically do but likely take longer to actually get working.
>>
>>382001450
Except that Just Cause is pretty damn terrible in just about everything but physics. Besides, aside from the cables the physics really aren't all that fun play around with. Disregarding mods.
>>
Its great because they give up a fuck ton of tools you can apply in multiple scenarios, which aid in accomplishing different things. I love it when freedom is in games like this.

Speedrun all the shrines
>>
>>382001079
Can't you make the same shit in Just Cause 2?
>>
>>382002136
I actually did a handful of Shrines "all wrong", yet much quicker than I was apparently meant to. Some were a total lucky shots, but some I just stared for a few seconds, saw an obvious solution, and proceeded to run through the entire thing within couple minutes. One such example would be that one with a wind-circle room with a hole for the ball in the middle. I just carried the sphere right to the edge of the hole, stopped its time, and ran to the elevator it activates.
>>
>>382002458
Lets imagine you can do almost everything in just cause 2 that you can do in breath of the wild. Just cause 2 still falls short on every other aspect of the game.

>>
>>382005765
>a glitch
It's fully intentional. There are admittedly a couple of legitimate exploits. But really, the more you try to break the game the more you just realize that the game always took your supposed exploits into consideration and accounted for them.
It's a game that's more than happy to have people go for unconventional solutions to move forward.
>>
>>382005765

it's not a game mechanic in every game

>>
>>382005765
>glitch
Nothing about that was glitched. You could call it cheating, but it used those powers that Link has to propel him. I believe he Stasis'd the drawbridge, hit it so it would launch, detonated a remote bomb for oomph, then un-Stasis'd it, went flying, then pulled out his hang glider to sail right to the end. I personally haven't played the game but that's what it looks like.
>>
>>382005765
It isn't a glitch, all of the trials are like this and it's clearly intentional.
>trial where you use gyro to navigate a ball through a maze
>can just flip the maze upside down and roll the ball straight to the end on the flat underside
>trial where you need to use metal crates to conduct electricity
>can just drop metal weapons and use thouse.
>>
>>382005765
You can argue it's an exploit, but a glitch? No. U are using intended mechanics to produce a result the developers didn't take into consideration; but you're still playing the game how its meant to be played by using the appropriate mechanics to do what its meant to do.

Well, there's explosive barrels on shelves which you can shoot to collapse onto enemies below, which both games have.
There's the saw blades which you use to slice enemies in half, grenades which you can pick out of the air with the gravity gun and toss back at the enemies who threw them.
You can drop cars on enemies to squish them. I know I'm missing a whole bunch of shit, but last time I played it was like five years ago.

Honestly, the entire game is based around physics based gameplay. It gets fucking boring after a while. And so did HL2.

The more I think about the shrines being actual places in Hyrule, the more they frighten me. How far into the earth are they? How deep does the pit go? Was the entire continent's bedrock hollowed out to make room for these things? It is too mysterious for me.

I just don't get the hype around Zelda Breath of Wild. It's a fantastic foundation for future Zeldas but seeing "10/10s" just reminds me of MGSV BIGLY.

But Witcher 3 and Bloodborne were legitimately good games because they had their priorities in check. Witcher 3 was an engaging narrative masterpiece with fantastic side content (some of the best quests ever) and Bloodborne was Myiazakis magnum opus with its unique setting, sublim level design and excellent bosses (Ludwig etc).

Breath of the Wild genuinely reminds me of MGSV. A solid 6/10 that gets 10/10 scores on brand name alone with an empty boring as fuck open world that is only kept marginally interesting/above average due to the solid gameplay foundation and present gimmicks. Dungeons, OST, Story, Side quests were all trash because the open world was the priority instead of the actual content.

how? What did it revolutionize?

It has a bunch of physics/materials that interact with one another in an open world? Minecraft does that, it's why minecraft makes a bajillion dollars.

It doesn't have a map so that you remain blissfully unaware of the density of the content in the game? I'll give you that, I'd imagine a bunch more games are going to start removing your map.

I'm trying to think of things that BOTW did that are actually atypical for open world games.

Come on dude. HL2 ragdolls are horrible. The human/combine models have weird bone structures so their legs can't bend outward from the hips and their arms are attached to the edge of their shoulder instead of closer to the center. Most of the time you kill an enemy, they just slump over with absolutely no weight. Usually the only good ragdolls you see are the ones where there's a specific map entity that "suggests" ways for ragdolls to fall, like when there's a combine up on a guard tower and they do a dramatic fall on death since the entity's placed below them.

Its innovation is the fact that everything has multiple different applications, all of its different systems interconnect with each other, everything contributes to a singular end goal, and there's no segregation between the open world and the game itself.
Basically, in other open world games you have a big open area for you to pointlessly dick around in and maybe look for useless collectables, and then you have story and side missions take place in a separate instance from the sandbox in a rigid linear fashion. But in BotW, the world is filled with stuff to do, and all that stuff always gives you something with practical use in combat and exploration, and can have some use in your ultimate goal of fighting ganon. All the systems of combat, exploration, cooking, and so on feed into each other, so no matter how you go about things during the game, it blends together fairly well

what you don't see in these webm's is the dozens of times they tried to make it work and could have just solved it normally, but there's a level of fun in being presented a maze puzzle and simply flipping it upside down and using it as a tennis Racquet

HL2 has the can you can throw in the guard's face, do you "have to"? no not really but it's fun as fuck

No, samefag, you are not right. Firstly, I've seen the limbs go every which way. Secondly, they don't just slump. >all that stuff always gives you something with practical use in combat and exploration, and can have some use in your ultimate goal of fighting ganon.

It just gives you equipment/food/other resources, but how is that any different than any other open world game? Mad Max gives you gasoline and food and you use both of those to power up your car.

You're pointing out things that it has in common with other open world titles but are claiming the elements are more significant without providing any reason why. Why is getting a new sword that does +5 fire damage a bigger deal in BOTW than it is in any other game where you get generic equipment, say skyrim?

What if you had a lockpick that could unlock any door but it depended on how good you were at lockpicking with it, it could take 1 mins or it could take 1 hour. But the key for the same door is regularly less than 10 minutes of puzzling around the corner that the devs left for you.

OP is only so OP as you are at doing it.

But if all the lockpicks are solved by the same method (just using stasis to make unintentional platforms) then why wouldnt I use that instead of puzzling?

Play the game and you'll see the limb restrictions in action. You could also ask some of the people in the modding community who have analyzed the game for years.
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Phys_ragdollmagnet
There's the entity I was talking about. One example in game is when you go behind a certain combine barrier in one of the city 17 rebellion maps, there's a couple CPs there and one of them is up on top of a large watchtower, shoot him and you'll usually get a very dramatic looking ragdoll since there's a magnet placed below him.

>>382016476
>Secondly, they don't just slump. They'll fall, launch, slide, tumble, flip, etc
Most of the time they slump over though, which is what I said. Enemies turn into ragdolls on death, with a few exceptions like the antlion guard, so most of their deaths look really lame as a result. If you're lucky and the map is well designed, they might fall off a building and hit a lamp post or something, but chances are you're not gonna see them do anything interesting besides fall over.

>Various weapons have a wide range of impact on NPC actors in HL2
That's just not true. There's like 3 different types of reactions - bullets which make soldiers flinch sometimes, explosives which knock enemies around, and the pulse rifle alt fire which has a unique animation.

>But don't you dare tell me that shit wasn't reactive
Nobody said that, they just look like shit most of the time. Is this really how you respond to criticism?

This is true. Zelda was lackluster in almost everything gameplay wise. Take this game for example:
>Open world, 3d movement, physics "dungeons" (challenges)
>Better combat (no menu navigation every 2 minutes because your weapon broke)
>More physics than BOTW (destroy buildings)
>Better story than BOTW (Main character actually talks)
>8 years older

The only really innovative thing in BOTW was the weather system. Everything else I'd seen before and ended up bored and quit after 2 divine beasts.
>>
>>382012631
YES. Holy shit, yes. Human bodies don't even flail like that, watch any gore/accident video: you don't see limbs flailing about like they're made out of jelly the second the body gets hit, so you can't use the "it's realistic!" excuse. It's just developers being lazy cunts.
>>
>>382017343
I don't even want to respond to this but:

Explosive barrels, sawblades, vehicles, revolver, crossbow, shotgun, SMG alt fire, physics props, any combination thereof all produce tangibly different results.

Also you're right, the ragdoll effect during disintegration for the rifle alt fire IS cool!

Yes, the skeleton rig is not the best.

Because it's more than just a sword with bigger numbers to hit things with. As I said before, in BotW, everything doesn't just have one purpose, but multiple. Let's take that fire sword you gave as an example. In the game, the fire sword can not only be used in combat, but also to cut down trees for wood, create campfires to cook food and change time at, or light grass on fire to create upstarts for easy vertical movement. Right there that one sword has applications in resource gathering, exploration, and better healing/buffing yourself. And even if it was a weak-ass sword compared to what you have already, it's still useful for those above reasons, and the fact that you need a steady supply of new weapons to replace the ones that break.

Explosive barrel/SMG grenade are both explosives. They do the same thing.
Revolver and shotgun are both bullet-based weapons. They also do the same thing.
Physics props/vehicles are both blunt impacts, which I did forget to mention, as well as sawblades since I wasn't thinking of physics props.

I never said anything about the game being boring, strawman harder. I said the ragdolls are shitty. Maybe I used a combination of "boring" and "dumb" to describe them, but those are both true and were specific to ragdolls. There's been no contradictions.

They really play nothing alike. You might as well as well use Chrono Trigger or something to claim that Crash Bandicoot is crap or whatever.

And RF3 was a disappointment in a lot of ways. They even removed the destructible environments leaving you with nothing but structures to destroy. It improved a lot but there was still a lot to be disappointed about.

But again. Nothing alike. It's like comparing Halo to Spider-Man.

why does the intent matter? The dungeons of OOT are designed around using bomb explosions to get link to higher ledges if you think that everything that is possible is intended.

That OOT slide is about as intentional as flipping the sliding ball puzzle upside down. As in, it doesn't matter, it's just possible.

I read this constantly about this game, and its the weirdest thing to me. I honestly think it's the lack of a good map. People mentally check out when they see a hundred dots on a map, and BOTW doesn't do that. The hundred dots still exist, the game has a fuckload of activities to do, but you're in blissful ignorance stumbling upon them one by one whereas in other open world games you would clearly see that the activities fit into a couple templates and crowd the world to an immersion breaking degree.

I didn't say it was like all the other open world games.
If anything, there is less shit to do in BotW than other open world games that came out before it.
Now I'm not saying modern nintendo has no fucking idea what they are doing Even though it's kinda true, but the game got delayed for 4 years and it's suffered because of that.

Not really.
Shit got tedious when I realized:

>A lot of the shrines have repeated puzzles
>The story is so vague it hurts, not only that but it's spread out so fucking far apart that I just stopped giving a fuck. Any motivation I had to go find out about Link's past just died.
>The game feels even more empty than morrowind with all these hills and plains with NOTHING IN THEM
>The game is padded to hell and back with fetch quests to progress through the four main areas

I've had more fun fucking around instead of actually trying to complete the main quest. But holy fuck you all made it sound like this game is the next Deus Ex when it simply isn't.

>can't collect it because you can't dive
>think back to the shrine with the big scoops for the ball and decide to try something similar
>throw a curved sword on the ground and usethe magnet to put it behind the ore to try to pull it up the riverbank
>sword gets stuck on the ore and won't budge unless I move it around the ore

t-that's ok, I didn't want the ore anyway

If you don't have a current shader cache the game loads instantly and even at 7000+ shaders in the cache it loads in like 1 minute
The game will become unplayable before it starts taking long to load.
The only time I have notcicible frame drops is the very first time a certain effect occurs (the first time a tower is activated, the first time one of those stones drips info water on the shiekah slate etc.) and every time after it plays smooth as butter.
As for crashes with a shader cache uunder 7000 it happens maybe once every hour or so and since the game autosaves this really isn't that big of an issue.

What did he mean for this? If a game isn't fun to play then why the fuck are you playing?
So why does the Zelda series not make nearly as much money as the Mario and Pokemon franchise do? Is it just because Zelda is more of a console brand (Japan isn't too fond of consoles.) and/or more difficult to make? Does Zelda have more competition than Mario and Pokemon? Is it the result of the Zelda series needing more innovation to sell well than the Mario and Pokemon franchises?

Oh I did that one last night. What I did was just stack the two boxes they give you around the back and threw the ball in from the highest point of the ramp and let it roll off.

Your solution is super clever though.

One I did yesterday as well was the one where you use magnesis to grab a chest near the beginning and use fire to burn away some tapestry leading to the rest of the room with 2 guardians...You're supposed to bring the metal box holding up the ramp through and over into the room with the chest/key. I just climbed on the box and onto a torch to climb over the level and finish it though.

Not really cheating either, it's exactly how the mechanic is meant to work, and that player used it to take a shortcut. He builds horizontal momentum with the weapon, and a small amount of vertical momentum by detonating a bomb underneath the bridge. Without the bomb, there wouldn't be enough upward force to get the platform to swing at all.

He actually did get the bolt on the video though.
I have my doubts you fully comprehend what actually happens in the webm.

For starters. The boomerang itself wouldn't be able to kill the Stalnox. When put at critical HP they instead drop their eye, and become invulnerable to damage. And only after that point can you actually destroy the eye.

It's no joke a three way execution of the Stalnox.
First he knocks the eye loose by hitting it from the left side with the boomerang. Right after that the lightning hits the boomerang as intended and the lightning also hits the eyeball that was knocked off.
Lastly however. And this is pretty cool as well. What kills the Stalnox actually isn't the boomerang. Nor is it the lightning. What ultimately puts the Stalnox to rest is the fire on the grass started by the lightning. And those flames shaves off the last HP.
