What was it about SA that created such a paranormal vibe and has there been any games since that have done the same thing? It wasn't a scary game and there weren't even any spooky easter eggs to find but there were so many videos of people claiming they found paranormal things.
>>
>>381999287
Because the big foot myth spread, much like people claiming you that you can unlock Luigi in Mario 64 if you do this and this.

Also helps that the game has a silent, eerie forest area.
>>
>>381999287
SA was the ultimate "That kid" game. It came out around the perfect time where internet wasn't as mega-popular and didn't know that videos can be edited, so a gorrilion troll videos were made daily.
>>
>>381999287

Because you weren't as exposed to information like nowadays on the internet. Plus you were 12 years old.

It had a pretty big land that allowed for a lot of exploration. Also, spooky forests outside the cities you could wander around without stumbling across any NPCs. You just had to wonder why they had put them there.
Add in the fact that the Internet was still not as massive as it is today and myths were allowed to flourish without anyone confirming or denying them straight away.

I always see this meme argument, it needs to end. People adapt to it because it's forced down their throats with no other options, it doesn't mean it's better than before. And forcing people to adapt to something different every X amount of time with no other reason than to "freshen up" the look only makes it worse.

Same deal with websites in general. I'd take the simple web 1.0 design over the slow ass "interactive" shit we have now.

Even if it didn't have them, the magic would be gone any way thanks to the popularity of the Internet.
Even GTA IV could afford a couple of mysteries here and there, such as that rat man in the subway or finding the house of a serial killer, but that's only because the game came out 9 years ago.

When you uploaded a video, Youtube would give you a set list of songs you could place over the audio of the video. That one 009 Soundsystem song was one of them, another called Paralyzer that everybody used, and also Bodies by Drowning Pool. There were a few others, but those were the ones EVERYBODY used.

Normalfags ruin everything.

The only good change of UI is when they ditch channel design that have video part on left and 2 playlists on right of channels video and favourites.
Worst part was you could see only 3 videos at the time, so scrolling that little frame was annoying.
Everything else kept getting worse.

In today's music it won't hit the chart because it's good, it will be the opposite of that.
You got to look for obscure as fuck bands / artists.

A few years ago i found a crazy Russian post-hardcore band with non-sensical lyrics, poor English (it gets better in the later albums) and a few trance elements into their music.

the game had suicidal NPCs in multiple locations, planes would randomly crash on their own, and there actually was a "ghost car" that spawned in the middle of the woods.

and many many rumors of leatherface or piggsy in the woods and then somehow bigfoot also popped up. internet was just message boards back then so not like anyone could easily quickly prove otherwise. also, there was a map in the desert that pointed to bodybags and people thought that meant something and also claimed aliens were in the game due to area 51 and how planes flying exceptionally high in the sky were sometimes merely rendered as simple moving lights in the sky.

Taking away the top comments feature made everything feel pointless.
It's sad nearly a decade later no one wants Google+, yet they still try to push it on everyone.
>>
>>382014547
It's hard to tell the difference between the parodies and the ones who actually mean what they say.
>>
>>382014726
>Taking away the top comments feature made everything feel pointless.
It's still there you know, you just click the option to sort comments by ''Best''.
>>
>>382014589
A mission has you cutting throats, though. First time you go to Mad Dogg's house you're instructed to do so.
That reminds me that SA was the first GTA to implement stealth as a mechanic. Did it stick or they dropped by in later titles? I honestly can't remember.

>>382014858

>>

Eh, not the same. Scrolling down and seeing "Top Comments" was half the fun.
Everything blends together, even with the 'Best' feature turned on.
>>
>>382014939
They were around, they just didn't last long enough to become a meme.

Not him but there was a hidden deepsea jellyfish mount you had to unlock by finding unmarked orbs hidden all over the new zones in extremely obscure places in a specific order after doing some other obscure shit. None of it was datamined.

I honestly don't know how people figured it all out, some of the orbs were in places like the bottom of the ocean in a hidden cave that you came within 1% life of drowning to reach, and even then it's hidden in a pile of debris in a corner of the otherwise empty cave. I'm told there's another mount available from a similar chain of hidden shit but I haven't played the game in months.

Would YouTube be better if it wasn't so heavily monetized? I remember back in the day people would just upload vlogs to express themselves, post random clips from films and TV, or tutorials so they could be part of a hobbyist community. Now it's all heavily-produced clickbait and 'crazy' videos of some guy destroying something expensive.

Thing is that Hot Coffee thing was just basically a different camera angle of something that was already in the game, and said thing was accesible by only changing a single line of code in PC game files.

It's not really comparable to say, finding a secret scrapped character or stuff that takes years to find like the secret Rocksteady room in Arkham Asylum.

>I will never spent hours watching domino fall videos at 2:00 a.m. in the morning in the comfiness of my cousin's room while watching movies and our parents were asleep

Is not even that I feel old, I'm just sad I know that feeing can't be recreated anymore. Videos on Youtube back then felt more home made and looking stuff like "the weird side of youtube" took you to creepy meaningless videos that you had to wonder if they were made as a joke or where really some satanic shit. Now most stuff you can find is popular videos everyone has talked about.
>>
>>382030385
It didn't really stay a secret since every single clue that was found was immediately posted online until everyone knew every step of it.
>>
>>382030974
I know, but anon was asking for secrets that weren't discovered by datamining. Despite every patch being more heavily datamined than any other game, the WoW devs still managed to hide those two event chains. Once players found them they were all over the internet, but that wasn't the question.

Internet humor back then:
>animation with sprites from popular games
>voice track and "plot" directly ripped off from some snl, monty python, who's line etc. skits, and reenacted with the game sprites/models
>animated characters lip syncing some silly and popular song

Internet humor now:
>cynical, ironic, and mean
>cringe humor is the most popular type of humor
>internet talking heads making compilations of the viral cringe humor videos and then making commentary on them

I can't believe I miss all of this stupid shit. 2005, 2006, 2007... I was in junior high those years. Believe it or not, but I still dream about those days. Every now and then I see dreams of being 14 year old and hanging out with my two friends of that time. That was probably the only time in my life when I had some true friends. I have one of them on my steam friendlist, but he's never online because he's not really a computer person. His last login was about year ago and his only game is Skyrim.

I was always the nerd of the group, the one who got little too excited over the idea of wasting the entire weekend on computer games. We were all nerds, but you know, I was the computer and video game nerd. The rest of them were the kind of nerds who actually got good grades in school. Our paths were separated when I chose to go in vocational school instead of high school. Mostly because my grades weren't high enough, but mostly because I was scared of the idea of going to high school (I have learned from movies and TV shows that high school is a place of drama, jocks, and girlfriends, and I had no business in place like that).
The vocational school was in the same building as the high school, so we met a few times in the cafeteria, changed few words etc. but not like we used to. We haven't been in contact ever since. The graduation was in 2011 and I've been NEETing ever since, mostly because of my mental issues. Lately I've been getting my shit together and I even got enrolled in adult high school. I'm starting next fall.

I never regretted going to vocational school instead of high school, but I do regret not trying harder to keep my ties with my buddies. I'm afraid I'm too old for obtaining new "best friends" type of friends, but I'm glad I got to experience that as a kid. As I said earlier, every now and then I still dream of being in junior high, with my two best friends.

>SA was the ultimate "That kid" game.

This. Just like the myth of Sonic in Smash Bros Melee this came around at a perfect "that kid" time when kids had easy access to the internet but were completely naive that things could be shopped and faked.

Someone makes a video about seeing Bigfoot in SA and then a million people make videos about seeing Bigfoot in SA, and any of us who were kids at the time who played SA ate it up.

They didnt really kill it per say, just expanded on epsilion more in 5 to the point where it was just basically a scientology parody(well it always was even in SA) and all the crazy shit people dug up on epsilon in SA was pretty much moot. But a little of the crazy weird shit is still in there. (like the theory that the leader is really a god, and all the shit the epsilon cult talks about is really true)

The problem with today is that corporatism(?) is homogenifying everything, and as a result, mature and esoteric content is available to everyone.
Kids do not have childhoods anymore because they took them away with extreme connectivity. We happen to live in a society so free culturally that it's on the verge of either losing its rights or having too much to do.
Eventually, underground communities will, one day, be resurrected or stay safe. But the life and death cycle just gets faster as our lifespans get longer.

The sudden internet expose of 2007 is directly and indirectly responsible for

-Youtube how it is today
-Facebook becoming big and Myspace dying
-Steam gaining a monopoly position on PC
-Walking Sims and Puzzle games killing Adventure Games due to Portal existing around that time
-Every AAA dev copying CoD MW resulting into a decade of brown-gray american vs anyone shooters and non-shooter genre suddenly getting turned into shooters
-Social features getting pushed into games
-Phone/Casualization
-Nerds becoming ''trendy'' thanks to BBT (Actual nerds are still not cool)
-Centralization of the internet (Going from thousands and thousand different sites with different people and topics to a centralized hub where only a few sites stand out )
