Here is how to never get burned:

>don't preorder
>don't even look at marketing for games
>ignore any interviews
>ignore all events
>don't read reviews or even go to game based websites (Except /v/ and just ignore threads about new games)

If a game does somehow take your fancy then wait at least a year before considering buying it. If it's a multiplayer focused game, it is likely dead otherwise if it got decent updates and such you can put it on your buy it soon (soon in valve time). When the game is in a humble bundle, steam sale or any other massive discount sale you can consider buying it although best to wait for the second or third sale (Which may include all the DLC).

Indie is meant to be short for independant which means it is developed and published by the same company. But in reality, that's not what the word actually means. Blizzard is independant, but no one would call Overwatch or WoW indie games (even tough they technically are). Then, there are "indie" games that ARE published by another company, and they even call themselves "indie publishers", which is retarded because the moment they publish them those games are no longer independant.
So what people really mean by "indie" is low-budget, low-effort shitty games, and those devs label themselves themselves as to say "Please forgive the low quality of my product for I am just a poor lone man. Please do not compare my game to other products for I am merely an indie dev".
There is nothing wrong with "independant" games, even those made by a single person or very small team, as long as the quality exists. But the label of indie is associated with low quality. Small devs may not be able to have the best graphics, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't have decent ones. They may not be able to compete with larger devs on production value, but they can compete in ideas and novelty. Making a shitty clone of a 90s game- that's worse than the actual game you're copying- is not making a good game.
Any aspiring independant dev should avoid labeling themselves as indie. If you are making an RPG, don't call it an indie RPG. Call it an RPG.

I know I pretty much described every Ubisoft game for the last 5 years, why do devs think that all consumers want repetitive, watered down garbage that babies players doesn't let them think for themselves?

I've been playing Farcry 3 lately and a few small mods that clean up the UI and withhold information from the player make the game so much more fun.

Pretty much this. Never pay attention to marketing of any kind unless you want to be manipulated and lied to. Why anyone watches game shows, award shows and trailers is beyond me. Also not caring about these things means I can play more games instead of getting "hyped up" for the next ubijew release.

"Competitive" multiplayer is a huge red flag for me though, there is no faster way for me to completely lose interest in a game than that.
Also any and all moba-style gameplay and randomized drop systems that conveniently can also be paid for like lootboxes are huge turnoffs.
Crafting focus and survival elements too, but not quite as heavily.

I've always like the concept of crafting and survival elements, but the games that feature them often have pretty bland core gameplay.

Also they tend to be multiplayer focused which for me is a deal breaker since I'd prefer those kind of mechanics in an immersive single player game. I think Subnautica is the only "crafting and survival" game to get it right, but even then that game's still and early access work in progress.

Here you have an entire entertainment form defined entirely by interactivity, and nearly every story told with it is just a bad movie with gameplay sections thrown in between the scenes. Imagine if every movie ever made was just a man sitting in a dark room alone reading you a book. But it was never anything better than the garbage you find on the bargain shelf in your average Chapters. People wouldn't consider movies to be a very good storytelling medium.
