In Dark Souls 1, he's implied to have been Manus, although after having already died once and then been resurrected by Oolacilians.

In Dark Souls 3, there's a big collection of them for some reason. And somehow their versions of the Dark Souls are somehow different from ordinary ones. For reasons. Also they have somehow survived potentially hundreds of thousands of years despite the undead curse dispelling numerous times.

The furtive pygmy was the first human, the guy who found the Dark Soul. He died as humans do but he'd split the Dark Soul amongst all the pygmies the gods left behind after finding the Lord Souls and fucking off with their own cliques. His or her identity is completely unknown and lost to time, but being the progenitor of humanity lead to their veneration. The pygmy lords in the Ringed City are his descendants who hold larger fragments of the Dark Soul, and it was them who fought alongside the gods against the dragons. Because Gwyn feared the Abyss, he gave them the Ringed City as a gift but really used it to trap them, and with them out of the picture he was free to rewrite history including covering up mankind's true heritage and involvement in killing the archdragons and just saying the gods made them. He might have also erased all record of the furtive pygmy's identity as well, hence why he is so furtive in the first place.
