So metroidvanias are my favorite genre, and I love Rabi-Ribi, but always saw Hollow Knight fans shitting on it. Now, I bought Hollow Knight during the summer sale, and I gotta say, I don't see it. I'm thinking the people saying it's better must not have played Rabi-Ribi.

Hollow Knight is good, but it's a lot more simple with barely any sense of progression. It focuses a lot more on atmosphere and mood but the game itself is almost boring, especially compared to Symphony of the Night/Rabi-Ribi or whatever.

It's decent and well-made but not amazing. I like the bug aesthetics tho.

I don't even have an anti-anime bias, and I think the game looks awful, not the sprites / dialogues, they look alright, but the ingame looks like shit.
The pixel art is terrible, the environments look like vomit, the ui is a cluttered mess with an awful color palette
I can't even bring myself to try it because of that

No the game has some issues, the level design is nothing spectacular (it's average) and i honestly didn't had any fun against the regular mobs. The mini bosses and bosses are what truly make this game stand out.

Still i liked it, i always wanted that kind of shmup metroidvania mix and it's good overall so i can't complain. Also easily some of the best boss fights in years, not like it's hard, especially when trash like soul games are used as reference for good bosses.

Have you tried something like a 0% run anon? The level design is brilliant with how many paths and routes through the game are perfectly viable.

You raise a good point with the normal enemies being a bother but especially in alternate runs they become legitimate and interesting obstacles to tackle, the only part I didn't really enjoy was the "real world" segments because enemies attacking and hitting you from off screen with poorly visible attacks is bullshit.

I geve this game a second chance after I dropped it midway through Chapter 1 and I beat the whole thing. Just so I can now confidently call the game complete garbage. Even aside from the cringe art and story, the actual gameplay is a mess with a map that restricts you, bullet hell bosses that don't respond to getting hit, LEVEL SCALING in a non RPG game and a bunch of other dumb design decisions. The music also sucks. I'm sorry but the game is a 3/10 AT BEST.

Opinion discarded, that game is like they tired to copy dark souls but had no idea what made dark souls good. The level design and enemies are just boring and uninspired, everything looks the same and without a map it makes navigating the worst thing ever.
But even worse are the bosses, outside of like the first one they are all really terribly designed and only difficult because they either do way too much damage, spam a bunch of attacks you can't avoid or because they are set on a tiny arena with attacks that knock you off the edge instantly killing you.
