Fallout 1 gives you different starting items depending on what skills you pick, so you can pick something that is actually useful outside of combat like Science or Lockpicking.

You really don't need more than one combat skill anyway, Fallout 2 is just asinine at the start for no reason.

It's not hard to make a character who is proficient in more than two fields in these games either I'm just giving an example of what to do at the very start to not fuck yourself over. But even if you ignore all that you can still get past the temple of trials if you know what you're doing which a guy like Spoony who claims to be huge fans of the first two Fallout games damn well should. Fuck you can just run past all the enemies in the temple if you got a low melee skill and there's ways to cheese past the fight at the end if you can't talk your way out of it. Fallout 2's start is a pain if it's your first time ever going through it but someone who has played it should know damn well not to try and punch your way through everything if you have a melee skill at like 30%.

Disengaging from a fight that's going badly is pretty standard for RPGs, even in modern games you're not usually locked into a fight. You can just walk away and try again, if the health reset on the enemy you still have a second chance, he's not doom to smack it until he dies. It's stubborn angry play on his part.

In all my times playing F2 I never even thought of doing that. I just always killed everything, and did everything in the temple despite hating it.

But you can and by the time you reach Frank you should have enough built up for others skills or good enough gear to deal with him how you see fit anyway. You have to almost go out of your way to reach an impossibly hard scenario in Fallout 2 because just about every situation has multiple solutions. If all else fails just load up on stat buffing drugs.
