Also a more real answer (at least in my experience) was that my family couldn't pay $400 for a SNES and some faggy shit like final fantasy. But I could take $2 from my moms purse and play SF or KOF.

When you're young and poor, and you get to go to blockbuster to pick out a game, what are you going to pick? If you're an only child you're going to pick probably a long rpg you can sink your time into (this leads to Black Otakus). This is because you're probably only going to get one game each time, so why not make sure it's a long game, because to a child the length of a game can dictate it's quality.
If you're not an only child, odds are you need to get one game that everyone can play. So, fighting games are the natural choice. You play them with your siblings, you trash talk, and they last for a long time, since the only limitation is your desire to play.

Seems to be the reason, anyway. I've seen a number of black people explain it that way. Could be something far more simple, though.
