To be honest assuming you are going in without using a guide whatsoever you may never finish it, at least not 100%. Using a guide obviously make the game as fast to complete as you would expect but kinda ruin the whole point of it all. If you play it I think using a guide as you need it may help to reach a middle ground, it is better than outright giving up on it to never be touch again.

My first playthough was around 30+ hours.

20 hours was the mark where i started using guides. It barely helped at all because of game's extreme non-linearity.

I will admit the game, to me, feels like a project to which you have to dedicate time and see it completed.
But the room design has nothing to do with it, more with how non-linear it is that you don't know what to do next or what area you have/can explore now.

Its a matter of going back and giving yourself a tour around the ruins to check where you had left off

Cause in the same tablet it will tell you about things to look out for in a cryptic way.

Like if it says "Smash the heart of the crescent moon" and at some point you come across a room with vases in a crescent moon formation you look back at your notes to see if there's one that could help you out in that situation.

It might not be easy and at some point you might have to think really hard on what hint tells you what to do, but its not "bullshit"

The thing about this game is tablets tell you everything about that. If you fail to read and maybe even take notes from time to time, you will be fucked. For every screen, there's a puzzle, but for every puzzle, there's at least 1 tablet. I kept a list of tablets I read and couldn't immediately figure out, and put a check mark next to them when I was sure I figured out what puzzle it was related to and didn't need it anymore. Took me 80 hours to beat the game guideless though. To be fair, the temple is fuckin huge with 16+ sections to it, but still probably took me an above average amount of time.

Its been so long since I backed this on kickstarter. On one hand, I have frequent updates reminding me that the game is still alive and being made, on the other hand, it has been so long and we still have no solid idea of when it might be close to done. At least I have the hope that all this time he's taking means it'll be as expansive as the first. Heres the update from the backer forum:

I'm in a position of designing the overall structure, game balance or other important essences.
When I'm too much into these tasks, sometimes I forget to add small elements.
Which means, when I'm thinking about the connection of the maps or walkthroughs, the map tends to have less traps or lava.

Therefore, every time I realize these crucial oversights (which happens periodically), I do a thorough check of whole map and add the most important elements, "death traps" so that players can die a lot. This is how LA-MULANA is made.

Adding to above, I'm too used to making 2D games, so sometimes I change my mind to 3D mode to have more 3D assets like rotating objects.

They are also putting in a lot more visual detail than the original, pic related is apparently only a one-time character that gives a small hint

The only bosses that can really annoy me are Bahamut (fuck that fish and his fucking corridor fireballs), and Viy can be frustrating (but only if I get knocked back by a random thing and fall all the way to the bottom because of how you lose all control in a knockback) but is also pretty doable.

Thank god for the Axe though.

Only the Fifth Children were killed by Mother I think, they tried to imitate Mother by trying to create life themselves (the Sixth Children) and made Mom mad. Chamber of Extinction is the place where Mothers wrath took place, the corpses are the remains of the Fifth Children I think. Other Children either killed themselves (accidentally or out of shame of not being able to fulfill Mothers wishes) or just faced extinction as the next generation overtook their place.
The monsters in the ruins are not the actual Children but rather their distant descendants or completely other species that just happened to adapt to the environment and look the same as the Children

Chakrams actually deal almost the same amount of damage as the pistol and you have effectively unlimited ammo for it. The final whip upgrade is even more powerful. The only advantage to the pistol is that you can get it before either by grinding for money.

Actually surviving the caltrop quick-kill trick is a lot harder than just hitting Viy with strong projectiles. In the remake you get your health drained constantly when in contact with Viy, even while you have invincibility frames. The caltrop damage boost is just so you don't loose time to the hurt animation when on top of Viy.

I really want to like this game, and it's fucking great at parts, but every time I start I quit because of some stupid b/s.
Most memorably I was stuck for a while in the tower of the gods because the trusses look like background pieces and don't remotely look like the ladders literally one screen away.
Other than that I spent so long wandering because as far as I'm aware, there's no hint for the door to the tower of the gods appearing, or the sphinx in the temple of the sun getting destroyed.
Also using weights to go anywhere is shit because it costs money to explore, in a game about exploring.
Am I just shit and suck at this game? I'd really like to be shown what I'm doing wrong, but it always feels to me like there's enough design oversights to ruin the whole thing.
