I didn't know about Roxas' past, I only knew about his attitude on justice and his friends from KH2 (I'd only played 1, 2 and CoM). From what I saw he was a much better character than Sora, in both agency and validity.

Probably because Roxas is a lot more relateable, as weird as that sounds. While Sora is a goofball with a shitload of luck on him, Roxas's personality is compartively really grounded, with his introduction basically amounting to "wasting the last days of summer vacation" until shit goes awry. He lives (or thinks he lives/wants to live) in a comparatively normal city, living a comparatively normal life to So"I live on a group of islands and me and my friends have a special island that we built a fucking mansion-sized treehouse on"ra.
To add on to this, Roxas's later motivation hits a lot harder. While Sora's motivation is "I gotta get my friends back", Roxas's motivation for most of KH2 is "I want to exist as my own person", which is a hell of a lot more relatable in a weird, abstract sort of way. It's a lack of independance taken to its most extreme level; Roxas was basically forced into being merged with someone else, and when he loses the fight for dominance it's not even really his fault since Sora wins with what's probably the cheapest shot in the whole series. He's one of the few characters in stuff like this that actually has a damn good reason to angst, and even then Roxas gets more frustrated than angsty which keeps him from being whiny. Like shit, he's the only character in the series to DOOL WIELD without a Drive From or something of that nature. He just does it because he's FUCKING PISSED in all three cases he does so.

Also, his clothes are a lot less ridiculous than Sora's. His feet are, like, actually normal-sized.
