I actually cannot count how many playthroughs ive done of this game on SNES emulator.

Multiple years in multiple summers nights just grinding out the game whenever I was bored . Such an amazing game

Seiken Densetsu 3. Go play it RIGHT FUCKING NOW.

Seconding. The music is great. Lyse is top tier everything.

>>
>>381943432
Action RPGs are amazing if done right. What are you talking about?

No random encounters, instant transition from fight to exploration, getting exp for killing stuff on the screen etc... it's a lot more intuitive for an adventure than
>hurr screen fades to black
>dididididididid dododododododododo
>wait
>wait
>ATB gauge is full
>dididididid dodododododo
>X attacks
>3 minutes later...
>won
>exploration continues for 20 more seconds
>screen fades to black again
>>
Anyone got that picture of Chrono Trigger being played in an emulator with a chat line of some guy getting pissed that someone lost the power gauntlet? I never did understand what that was about.

It was one of the biggest fan translations of its time. There was literally hype around it. Lots of it. In fact, I would argue that one is pretty much the sole reason we had fan translations on the SNES and arguably one of the big reasons they became relatively commonplace. The sheer depth of how big it was wouldn't be topped until ToP or SO1 was translated.

Now pic related I could understand not knowing -- Hourai High School by the way -- but not SoM3.

So there, youngfag, you learned something today.

Dude honestly CT is one of those games that really is worthy of it's praise. I really think it belongs on the level of SMB3 and Doom. Also the game is quite short for a jrpg, only about 20-25 hours. If there is ONE jrpg you should play, it is CT. As I said it osn't my personal favorite but I think it really is probably the best.

Go with the ds version, definitely the best version of the game.

>>
>>381943779
What are some amazing action RPG's then? A lot of them have bad level design which is a very important thing for an action based game. Then they do various things wrong with the combat, they either make it way too simple which is silly for a game with RPG length, lock skills behind levels thus the combat has no chance in being entertaining until later, stiff combat, cumbersome to switch to any of your spells on the fly so you often just have one spell that you always have on the ready.
>hurr screen fades to black
One of the few biggest ARPG series does this with transitions from the map to the battle field.

I only just played BoFIV this year and it honestly maybe one of, if not my favorite game ever made. There are few games, let alone fucking rpgs, that I play immediately after beating but I did with BoFIV. I can't remember the last time I loved a game so much, other then being easy and some padding near the end I find it near perfect.
>>
>>381944875
The story is good and the characters are charming but the game play is really straightforward and there aren't really any mechanics involved. Just a really traditional turn based rpg.

im a big fan of RPGs but I just cant for the life of me get into turn based. It just feels like almost all the encounters are just "spam A and make everyone attack the first monster and theyll all wipe eventually" and very little thought involved. It makes basically everything in between towns or bosses boring for me. I had this problem really badly in Dragon Quest 8, FF1, and FF2. I haven't played many other JRPGs, which makes me really sad, because their artstyle and aesthetic really really appeal to me

You're an idiot who doesn't get RPGs. You can't spam "a" with black mages, white mages and other classes, or you're playing the game wrong.

The fun of a RPG is absorbing the world and learn as much as possible about it. Absorbing the story.

Which monsters give what amount of EXP?
Which monster drops what item and what can you steal?
Should you upgrade your weapon with 200G now or hope that you find one in a dungeon? What does the NPC mean he says that there is a ghost inside a cave?
What are the villains goals?
Should you buy 5 antidotes or not?

It's a lot more than simply spam "A" moron.

Hacked my 3ds so i'm blowing through a bunch of JRPG now, feels like fucking heaven.

Dragon quest 7 is so fucking good, holy shit, they just didn't do a lazy ass remake, they completely remade every single monster and region graphically, and touched up to look really stellar and charming. Monsters even have sleeping animations.

Not sure if i want to play the DQ8 remake though, i would only play for Morrie, but i still remember quite a lot of the game, and would feel a bit boring.

WA3 was a straight western, it was so classy. i have never played another rpg with such unique characters...

WA2 was full of such fucking weird ideas, from the vampire girl that was basically rachel from BB to the chick with the bionics, to the whole demonic undertone at the start of the game..

very cool series though imo.

Saving the spirits. I played the game back on ps1 days and due my cursed memory, i still remember quite a lot that happened, but it was still really refreshing to see the game being done in HD, and all the added accent charm

Too bad they removed party chat during battles. And now that i'm replaying, man, did they pad the game at very end. So much needless backtracking and revisiting, but i guess the party chat and the new dialogues from NPC make it worth it.

While not a fan of the accents I'm pretty okay with it in the 3ds version of VII, nowhere near as bad as IV on ds. Honestly the padding never bothered me too much, I admit it's there and I can see why someone would call it a flaw but I can't say it has ever bothered me too much. I quite like both versions, both have thier strengths and weaknesses. Things like party chat in battle is nice and the ps1 version has a charm to it but I would be lying if I said I don't appreciate how much easier it is dealing with the tablets and pillars.

I don't know if I'd consider the story an especially strong suit of the game, but who you pick first at the beginning determines what set of villains/end game dungeon you get and who's backstory you see more of. If you didn't like Hawk/Lise then you can try Duran/Angela or Kevin/Carlie to see if it's more to your liking.

>I would be lying if I said I don't appreciate how much easier it is dealing with the tablets and pillars.

I was pissed at beginning too, but it was really well done. And less grinding to get some of the jobs, because holy shit, i remember being an insane amount of grinding to get the summoner and hero classes. You would be so high leveled and so late game, it is like it wouldn't matter.

The game is poorly balanced, grindy, and repetitive. I used to play it a lot back in the day, because I wanted to like it desperately. It was so pretty, and sounded great, and the system was so promising. But ultimately, it was a huge let down, and never got good. A highly polished disappointment.

I want to enjoy CT, but anytime I think about it I'm reminded how the sequel fucked everything up and retconned it so all you did in CT was doom the world/reality, until a group of REAL HEROES could clean up your mess.

This is perhaps the only case in the history of gaming where an incredible cover was matched by an incredible game.

24 years later no other cover managed to make me interested in a game as this one did. It was the early 90s so often the cover was all you had to buy a game and this thing is a masterpiece.

I get how you feel, I felt the same way for awhile even, but you need to accept it. Chrono Trigger is it's own game, you can't evaluate it based on what happened after it. Also technically speaking the events of CC only happened due to the actions of the CT cast.

It's not fully known if Crono and Marle were killed, just that Guardia fell to Porre.
Some believe they may have lived and just lived out their lives as regular civilians living as different people here.

>>381951581
While the translation is technically more accurate, Frog's affected manner of speech in the SNES version gave the game a better flavor.

The screen resolution of the DS has 32 fewer vertical pixels than the SNES. Which is about the height of a character practically speaking. And you might think it doesn't matter, because you can put the battle menu on the bottom screen. But keep in mind that much of the game isn't in battle. And the battles themselves accounted for the menus. So by removing the menus from the scene, you're left with excess space. Not proper framing intended by an artist.

Also, the color palette has been skewed to more yellow for some odd reason. Doesn't even seem necessary, but they did it.

All the new content is shit.

The creator of the series kept messing up with the entries that came after Legend, a lot of the staff left after the Enix merger to make Brownie Brown, the games in general kept selling poorly, and the creator left SE after the many failures to make his own company, Grezzo.

There's a new producer on the series though who put out that one mobile/Vita game that I've been told was decent, the mobile/Vita remake of SD1, and the collection for Switch. He claimed years ago he wanted to make a SD5 on a home console after getting some re-releases out to bring the series into the public eye again. The creator of the series seems to have some groove back too, since Grezzo finally put out an original game and it's pretty good.

You know what? I'll give you two a list of other SNES fan translated games you may be interested in that I enjoyed to some degree. You too can start to loath Nintendo as a result of this.

>Hourai High I already mentioned.
>Take DQ's job system put it into a high school setting based on humor and there you go.

>Bahamut Lagoon
>FFT lite with FF6's graphics. SRPG based around dragoons. Has an overall plot similar to FF6 too.

>Live A Live
>Game in which you have a bunch of people throughout time going through stories that aren't related to each other until literally the very end. Episodic in nature.

>Treasure of the Rudras
>The big bad is pollution. Also the moon is involved. But the neatest thing about the game is the spell system. Instead of learning "Fire" you have to type the word for "Fire" -- I think it was Agi, akin to SMT but I'm not certain offhand. Then you can modify it with other words and such to have other effects. Worth playing for its spell system alone

>Terranigma
>You've probably seen this one already at some point, but its an adventure JRPG where you're a spirit who has to protect the world. Plays akin to Zelda LttP.

>Fire Emblem 4
>Its Fire Emblem with XBOX-hueg maps and split into two parts. In between Part 1 and 2 everyone in your party dies and then Part 2 comes around and you control their kids. Also nicknamed "Eugenics Simulator" for this.

>Sailor Moon: Another Story
>JRPG with Sailor Moon. Time Stop is OP as hell, but outside of that is fairly solid. Even has formation attacks.

>Der Langrisser
>SRPG where you can turn evil and help the BBEG rule the world. The ending has you die and no one cares. You can also side with another BBEG or side with the good guys. But anyways, leader units hire mercenaries so its always large scale battles. Pic related.

I made this list a long time ago but forgot to hit submit because I got distracted.

Its been widely discussed, I didn't think it was worth not spoiling. Bahamut Lagoon is pretty with a good OST. Also, I hit character limit with that post, else I could have included more, and Tactics Ogre was released in Burgerland in English.

Romancing SaGa 3 I actually don't recommend unless you're playing Mikhail. Its an unfinished mess that feels unfinished because it is unfinished. And I say this as someone who loves SaGa games, especially Unlimited. Mikhail's gimmick feels a little better, but still underwhelming.

If I wanted to list more, I'd list:

>Indigo: Way of the Ninja
>You're a ninja. Oda just killed your clan. Go kill him. Also its somewhat open-world.

>Dark Half
>Take Ravenloft. Now split the game between the hero and the villain. Also, Christ that OST is good. Also the villian can kill himself by cure. Pic related.

There's two more that I can't recall the name of, much less a lot of details about them, that I played over 10 years ago so I can't even mention them if I wanted to.

The only thing that chrono trigger lacks is good gameplay. I mean, it's ok, but you wont remember the game for his gameplay, you won't say "damn, im gonna play it again to try this different in the gameplay".
You'll remember it because of the music, the story (great story, easy to understand but really cool), his characters and moments.
Also, a lot of side content.
Really good game. I wish it had more RPG elements instead of just combo skills and magic. Maybe it didn't need them, but personally i love customization, so things like talent trees and learning magic are fun.

Kevin shits on everything Duran does aside Sabers. Better tank, Best damage in the game, better spells.

Duran only has Saber's going for him, and that 1 shield that actually works late game which negates him even getting sabers.. Hawkeye eventually outdamages him late game, and Riesz always stays pretty much the same if a bit less in terms of damage, but has way more utility and for some reason is tankier since she can take magic hits and isn't that far off physically.

>after all these years, people are still making porn of Riesz

Has she even been in other games?

It amazes me how much r34 there is for Riesz. Was SD3 that popular in Japan?

I love almost everything about Final Fantasy IX except the combat. I already don't really like ATB and ff9 makes it even worse, it's so fucking slow I want to kill myself
>>
>>381958902
Duran and Angela despite being canon pair, don't work well together.

Just go Riesz, there's literally no party combination where she doesn't fit in somehow. That and Dark Riesz just let Kevin shit out damage and Angela nuke pretty well.

>>381959045
Mobage shit mainly along with the SD3 crew, and she's in a fighting game with Hawkeye, which is based on a Mobage. Million Arthur Arcana blood I think its called.

She's also in Lord of Vermillion. Which will never release outside Japan.

im emulating this game and its the bees knees but it freezes at the first boss after you beat him very lame. looked for real copy but its made rare and spensive

it was the golden age of snes era jrpgs. but I think we got great jrpgs untill mid to late 00's

Never played it. Art style looked janky and generally seemed like a different game. Should probably give it a go round at some point though.

Still sold a Million over there. It was liked but not the biggest thing.

Riesz is simply the single biggest enigma on how and why she's so popular.

Thanks man. I'll give that a go.

Well yeah, I'd rather play FGO than replay Dark Dawn because I really hate how it turned out.

GS is a bundle of wasted potential and they'd need an actually competent jrpg team to help them out.

Trying to design a basic RPG that's in vein of DQ1. What I have so far is:

>no party members, but you can have a summoned familiar per battle
>battle transitions take almost no time, just like DQ1
>battles are straightforward and snappy
>only face 1-2 enemies at a time, rarely 3
>action commands?

What else should I add?

Thoughts on chrono cross /v/?
>>
Is chrono trigger/cross better than dragon warrior if I'm just looking for a jrpg with toriyama art?
>>
>>381966303
It needs better explanation of the events
less characters
and that's it.
>>
>>381966303

a billion useless characters that butchered literally my favorite childhood game

it's still pretty fun on its own merits though

>>381966428

Well if time is a matter then consider this. chrono trigger takes only about 20 hours to beat, should be very manageable. Early dragon quest titles are also quite short. Honestly unless you play dragon quest VII (which is about 100 hours) you should be fine. I recommend either dragon quest III (snes version) dragon quest V (either snes or ps2 version).

Also chrono cross had a different artist.

Aside from the card crafting and the voice acting, this game is top notch. I can't wait to finish and play the sequel, which is said to be even better.

The voice acting might be awful at times, but I love how cheesy it is.
