They're just milking the popularity and brand recognition of the original xenoblade, since so few outside of dedicated gaming forums really know about xenogears or xenosaga.

I don't think he's popular, he's more like "slightly less niche" than he was before.

But aye, most of the interviews from around E3 paint a picture of a man that gets bored making the same kinda stuff, so maybe switching between 2 styles (and maybe a smaller budget handheld title) will keep him happy. If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure the next Xeno game is already in the works given XBC2 was in the early concept stages right before X released on March 2015

What farming is locked behind the online stuff? am I missing out by just starting to play now?

The endgame gear and augments are locked behind reward tickets for the most part, unless you enjoy farming 100x as much. Reward tickets are given to you by picking appendages from online only bosses that pop up every week or so, and they can only be beaten a finite number of times, meaning if you miss out on them you can't grind tickets, thus you can't farm augments, thus you can't become death incarnate and beat Mira's Angels.

Oh, also, you need to spend a separate currency in order to fight the online only bosses, and you get that currency by recruiting online players to your party and training them.

The online is absolutely integrated in to the endgame, and it needs to be fixed on a potential port.

That was only a thing because of a bunch of the Xeno games being owned by different companies. Monolith has no reason to not call all of these games under Nintendo Xenoblade.
