The main artist was frustrated by the slow progress of the game, basically nothing was being accomplished. Likely because they were milking it for 27k a month. So he left. The head of the project foolishly brought the artist in without securing the rights to his work and all future art he'd produce, so the artist just left and like a dick he said they couldn't use the art anymore.

Basically killing it entirely. Then he opened a new project with the art assets from the other game. It was also implied, but not proven that this was probably something he planned months in advance, working on the new game on the side.

I think that's all the drama.

Is it possible to keep something like this from happening to the development of a game?

Can you put the artist under contract? Was it his idea to begin with?
