4 is one of the worst games in the series. The DS/PC remake is the best version and it's merely passable.

The only reason anyone likes 4 is because it's the first or second one they played and it seems like a big step up if your first game was 1, as it was for most Western players. It pulls the story almost word for fucking word from 2 and has inferior gameplay to 3. Fuck 4. 4 belongs in the trash.

This. 4 is A-spamming madness. There is no way to customize your characters beyond plain equipment, and no way to vary your playstyle. If an encounter is difficult, there is no way to change up your strategy, because you're already locked in this narrow field of options the game forces you in.

If a boss' attack pattern involves spamming the same overpowered AoE move every turn that you can't do anything about, it's probably not the best possible design. You still have to be careful, but there is zero thought put into it.

5 is one of the best games of all time. 4 is one of the worst in the series.

On the topic of FF ports: are the HD remakes of X and X-2 (on vita if that matters) fine, or would I be better off playing the originals?

FF4 is the third to last FF I played and it's still my second favorite. There's a huge power gap between it and 5, though.
