Mech guy, I fucking love mechs, specifically customizing them. Any recent or upcoming games where I can customize mechs? last one I played was Front Mission Evolved but I didn't really enjoy it, kept forcing you to use specific parts and do those shitty on foot sections plus all the bosses I fought were not fun at all

Jap mech. If you're prepared to except the handwaves / technobabble that allows something like a gundam to exist then it's an obvious pick over a tank.

Western mecha a la battletech on the other hand have nothing over an equivalent tank.

but why can't tanks use these handwaves / technobabble in Gundam?
>>
>>381926759
Because the main handwave in Gundam specifically requires limbs

Tanks in Gundam do use the magical reactors and particle beams, but they don't have 'muh AMBAC'
>>
>>381923901
More of a tank guy, I also like mechs, but not the Gundam style.

Also, WHO WHERE Z O I D S
>>
tbqh I actually like tanks more, but mech games/series ALWAYS have a superior tone/setting

Hardly anyone gets creative with tanks. Where are the fantasy magitech tanks? Where are the hot-blooded tank superheroes? Where's the Ace Combat of tanks?
>>
>>381926759

I'm going off of hazy memories here but the two handwaves in UC gundam that allow mobile suits to exist are A) The minovsky reactor that allows them the power they need and B) a special computer system that allows the suit a human range of motion without the need for ridiculously complex controls. The tanks could in theory gain the benefit of the first but not the latter. Not that it matters that much in Gundam in particular because there are units that blur the lines, eg. Guntank and Hildolfr.

>>381928714

True. And they all have the advantage of being virtual representations in a video game that aren't beholden to the limitations of real physics or economics.

Besides, in MWO at least you can mount anti-missile defense systems that shoot down incoming missiles with machine guns. Laser versions incoming with next months patch.

Don't forget that the Minovsky Reactor, used in both mobile suits and in battleships, disperses a fuckton of electromagnetic radiation. This radiation completely shuts down civilian-based electrical equipment, makes communication require a tonne of short range checkpoints and disables the ability for anything to track targets such as homing missiles. This is the reason the Gundam universe essentially reverted back to dogfighting and close range ship-to-ship warfare with boarding parties.

Tanks do everything mecha do, better.
You (do not) see pic related from a mile away, then it blows a hole through you. You shoot at it and your ammo bounces off of the obscene armor on that particular paneling pointed right at you like it was popcorn. Congratz, the mecha has no relevant armor and is a massive target.

>Faster to start up from cold standby
There is no way a fucking giant mecha is going to spin up any faster than a well drilled ground crew spinning up a pre-fueled attack chopper
>Remain on active standby without wasting so much fuel
A chopper can land basically anywhere a mech could operate.
>Larger assortment of weaponry, failing that it can rely on brute strength alone
I think I chopper has a mech outclassed. It stocks guided and unguided missiles and a head tracking autocannon capable of punching through basically any armor
>Higher durability
One hit to a mech's leg and it's going down. A chopper can still operate with only half it's rotors
>Higher psychological impact on the enemy
If I saw a giant mech I'd more more inclined to pull an ESB and trip it up. Small arms fire is basically ineffective against an attack chopper. You need specially guided munitions that are FAR harder to get ahold of. I'd be far more scared of a fleet of choppers than a squad of battle mechs.

>Congratz, the mecha has no relevant armor and is a massive target

The thickness of armor plating on a mech is going to be significantly more than that of a tank. We're talking about a machine that at a minimum would have dozens upon dozens of nano-carbon plating, the only currently known material that would survive that sort of mass shifting. The stuff they originally planned to use in the space elevator before finding out it had only 66% of the strength required for a structure that massive.
>>
>>381933648
Mechs are a stupid concept when you look at it from functionality standpoint.

There isn't any reason for making giant robots unless you want them to look like that. Mechs are strictly a fucking fantasy for tech nerds. People would look at Gundam and say "Hey, look at that fucking robot fighting the other robot with fucking beam swords like fucking star wars."

That's how I sell it to my anime fans who never saw it and they always buy it, and love it.
>>
>>381933790
I hate mecha but you're an absolute dipshit. I'll give you the first point but even if a chopper could land anywhere, it fucking WON'T, because command would obliterate you for landing a chopper anywhere outside of the FOB unless your engines were flaming out. I'll give you the missiles too but the cannon on choppers is at best to be used against light or unarmored targets like infantry or trucks. Even a proper IFV or APC can shrug that ammo off. A chopper is also fragile as all hell, bullshit half its rotors. If a single one of those blades falls off, the rotor becomes unbalanced and tears itself to pieces. Psychological impact is a meme on all sides.

Fuck no. When the mech can have that plating, the tank can have it too. It's just a plate, after all. The DESIGN of the mecha, all other things being equal in tech level, will make it inferior against the tank every time because there is no point to making the thing stand up tall when it can hide miles away behind a hill crest and nuke you with APFSDS uranium darts while being completely untouchable.

World of tanks is turning into a pay to win shitfest and there is no real competition anymore so WG does not have to change.

As one of the few that have done the work and research to get a whole nation added to the game, it really sucks to see 3 years of work go to waste.

No, it in fact can't have more armor than the tank about its entire frame without weighing about a thousand tons. Modern tanks have brought that to an absolute peak of science. It will always have weakspots from the front. The tank turret has none.

What your CO says you can do and what actually happens in a theater of war are 2 entirely different things. You would read TALES HELICOPTER PILOT. During a mission the dude had most of a blade shredded. He landed the chopper in a field, removed the broken blade and the one across from it and flew back to base, albit with far less power. No military attack chopper is going to going to shake itself apart with just a single blade down. They are built for war, you know. And are you going to sit there and tell me that there is a single tank in existence right now that could take 10 rounds of 30mm APDU directly to the top?

It doesn't make any fucking sense in space either unless you totally forget that f=m*a. In space, relativisitc kill vehicles make armor irrelevant, and since space is so empty, visual recon of your vheicle is enough to geot obliterated. Space warfare is such an utter clusterfuck that not even Minovsky particles can stop me from rolling my eyes at how little it makes sense.

>>381935963
As you can see, the entire vehicle is out of cover and the crew foolishly thinks that strapping a few trees as concealment to the thing is enough to save it. Tanks have thermal sights and see right through the foliage, to see the giant vehicle underneath. Especially easy to see are the legs, since they contain a lot of movement-relevant motors and actuators that love warming up as they are in use and therefore practically glow on the thermal vision. They then shoot the completely visible leg. GG.

Mech could have long-range missiles or some form of artillery and hit the tank from above. Also why does everyone assume the mechs are standing still and their legs are made of paper? I think it's safe to assume the mech would have armor and be able to take several shots, and a mech on the run would be pretty hard to hit square in the legs.

The actual reason mechs are impractical is less their form factor and more the fact that the form factor is incredibly expensive to produce. This might change with 3D printer like technologies because complicated shapes will have less to do with the production time and more the amount of material deposited.

For now, the intricate work required means you have to hire prohibitively expensive workers and use prohibitively expensive manufacturing processes.

Of course, mechs will always be completely stupid in truly open terrain and certain sizes of mechs will always be stupid. But in urban combat scenarios, where cover is abundant mechs could certainly outperform tanks.

A mech is even easier to kill then a tank would be. Whatever armor a mech is going to use a tank could use, but a mech can go down simply by doing enough damage to one leg and it is out of the fight. A tank can still fight if you detrack it.
>>
>>381938908
Look man. If a mech can have magic plot armor and defences, so can a chopper. Sure a modern day attack chopper would have trouble with a Gundam. But Gundam tech would be far more useful in a fast VTOL attack craft instead of a giant walking death trap.

>>381939181
>If a mech can have magic plot armor and defences, so can a chopper
A mech's size requires it be using the strongest materials known to man at the time of its construction. These materials are likely going to be incredibly heavy, beyond the maximum capacity of a helicopter which typically lines the cockpit with kevlar and not much else to protect from stray groundfire. Helicopters do not engage in close range combat, they're long distance.
>>
>>381939542
You're thinking about Vietnam era choppers.

>The Apache is heavily armored on all sides. Some areas are also surrounded by Kevlar soft armor for extra protection. The cockpit is protected by layers of reinforced armor and bulletproof glass. According to Boeing, every part of the helicopter can survive 12.7-mm rounds, and vital engine and rotor components can withstand 23-mm fire.

Mechs are cool as hell, but given similar tech, a tank can carry thicker armor, a larger armament and reach higher top speeds.
You can put a turret with a long ass barrel (something that directly affect a weapon's performance if we're talking about conventional firearms and railguns) on a tank without affecting its performance, but it'd seriously hamper a mech's mobility.
I imagine mechs would be an abolute menace in urban combat and especially in a support role coupled with infantry, but they'd get absolutely BTFO by tanks. Also they'd probably have a better survivability against ground attack craft due to their mobility.

tl;dr mechs are the Bradley of armor
>>
>>381939181
You'd need something as large as a Chinook to mount an early-UC Minovsky fusion reactor.
And those aren't powerful enough to generate protective I-fields (which only block beam weapons anyway, so one guy with a rocket launcher = You, dead) for any length of time.

>>381939938
Then you get to late UC where Minovsky fusion reactors become smaller and efficient to the point where MSs become smaller and vulnerable to 60mm guns.
>>
>>381939542
>And a bipedal mech can't?
Well maybe if it is a gundam style mech with arms. Most mechs that are being talked about dont have arms to correct themselves after they fall. Likely a mech will see one leg collapse under them and they fall down with their weapon systems being fixed completely unable to move even the slightest at best, face down or up highly likely.

>A mech's size requires it be using the strongest materials known to man at the time of its construction.
I know you are debating mech vs heli but this is still applies to things. Any advance armor that is given to a mech needs to be given to tanks also as logically the tank in said universe would ALSO be upgraded with the strongest material known to man, and potentially more of it.

Which brings me back to "unstoppable mech" when a tank would be far harder to kill and at the end of they day, you can only kill a helicopter with a specialized AA piece while a mech you can take out with a dumb fired rocket, or if someone is insane, run up and throw a sticky bomb in its leg joints.
>>
>>381940152

It's an argument in favor of how silly making giant walking robots is. A giant anything is generally a bad idea in war. It just becomes a target if it can even get around.

You wanna know the real reason the Nazis never built their massive supertank? It would not have been capable of driving on basically any terrain. It would shred roadways and just sink into grass and dirt.

A mech that weighs several thousand tons, with feet that small, would just sink right into whatever it was walking on. Walking on normal dirt and grass would be equivalent to a human trying to walk through quicksand.

There is a lot of truth to this statement. There is a reason why all MBTs trace their design to medium tanks and not Heavy tanks of WW2. Medium tanks had numbers and could actually make it to the front line.

Heavy tanks either broke down, failed to cross the terrain (pontoon bridges would break) or be taht much easier to kill by air. And it is much easier to build a better gun then enough armor to stop the better gun
>>
>>381940356
Okay nice but how does that answer te question in the OP, or my question, if we're at it?
If mechs and tanks exist in the same universe, then everything you can put on a mech you can put on a tank too, only you're less constrained by shit like carry weight or center of mass so you can build them tougher.
And who says a game with an AI-equipped tank would be more boring than a game with an AI-equipped mech?
>>
>>381942194

This argument always get brought up and it never accounts for newer, lighter materials being invented. You wouldn't have expected metal aircraft before the invention of Aluminium, but it was invented anyway.

I've always liked the idea of Starship Troopers style power armor. Each soldier is essentially a highly mobile tank, capable of jumping several km at a time while carrying an entire army's worth of musicians. The suites were small and light enough to walk around comfortably indoors but heavy enough to hold up to the rigours of space.
>>
>>381943040
Aluminium wasn't invented as it is a fucking metal, but you are right on the advancement of metallurgy which allowed to create lighter yet stronger alloys.

>>381943040
Yeah well it's all gradual.
Suppose you invent a lighter armor type or a more efficient form of propulsion. You could either make a new, retard huge weapon class that would've been inviable perviously, or you can keep an existing weapon class and make it faster / tougher.
Which approach proves better is up to circumstance.

Considering how much protection we can slap onto a tank and subsequently lighter AFVs, armor and survivability has almost caught up with firepower. MBTs are all the more threatening despite the proliferation of cheap yet advanced anti-armor weapons like the Kornet. I'd imagine an M1A2/3/SEP3, T-14, newer Leopard, etc will still be hard nuts to crack with +120mm guns, or at least provide enough protection to let the crew bail out despite the vehicle being hard killed or something.

That is until muthafucking railguns.

at a sufficient velocity kinetic BECOMES energy weapon.

accelerating even a tiny slug of dense metal to even a small portion of c imparts relativistic effects of energy decay upon the FUCKING AIR it travels through, causing fiery beamy death, which on impact, the energy loss of the the slug decelerating, imparts so much energy to the target you may as well have nuked the fucking with a fusion bomb.

Tanks.

Harder to kill. If successfully disabled, can still conribute to the battle. Easier to hide. Easier to defend with (hull down a tank as opposed to digging a foxhole for a mech.)

The only thing the mech has is longer range due to being slightly taller (making you easier to hit) and plausibly it may have more guns (though the tank probably has more ammo)

Not to mention that you could probably make more tanks for every 1 mech due to the complicated nature of mechs. And tanks would definitely be easier to repair

Gundam Breaker 3, yeah.
They released a "Break Edition" with all the DLC included a couple months back for the same price as the base game (and dropped the base game to a cheaper "welcome price" edition). Personally, I don't see the point in buying the normal release anymore; the DLC is more than worth the extra cost for anyone interested in the customization aspect of the game.

the beauty of the physics of it is you don't NEED a big heavy projectile, that's why the us is testing 3 mm, instead of 20 or more. they're not after ''bring back the bb's'' they want a weapon that they can swap out a modern ships small cal turret for.

and it takes surprisingly little energy compared to the EFFECT, to cause a TINY bit of metal shot out of a coil gun to CAUSE THE AIR IT PASSES THROUGH to DETONATE as it bleeds energy and Cause the target to FISSILE destroy itself shedding the transferred energy at the point of impact.

I hold on to the fact that it's depending on the tech. And also on what you define as a tank.

If missiles become the newest thing and cannons become obsolete then some people will say that tanks are BTFO, because in their minds a tank has a turret with a gun. That's two missiles at best, one from the gunbarrel and another missile launcher as an attachment. Whereas a mech can have many missile launchers attached to it. It won't really matter though because the real winners in such a scenario would be artillery, helicopters, jets and ironically Anti Air.

I get that you have a fantasy and all, but if you fire that in the earths atmosphere it would slow down immensely within the first couple hundred meters, even if it's that small. a railgun IS a coilgun.

you just get some really freaking cool wierd science effects out of making your little metal bullet GO FASTER.

it's due to the atoms and molecules of the slug having so much energy that even momentary collisons with the molecules and atoms of the various gases in AIR is enough to make THOSE go EXOTHERMIC as the slug travels, and then when the slug finally hits the target, transfer so much energy that both the 'weak nuclear force' (actually fairly fucking strong) and the 'strong electromagnetic force' (actually kinda weak) are overcome so stupendously that the photons et al comprising those molecules and atoms fly apart exactly like a fission / fusion bomb's reaction.

The only step up from chemical energy is nuclear. Electricity is just a very specific form of chemical energy (electrons transferring between nuclei). There is literally nothing wrong with that, look at how fucking big it is. I dont actually know what thats from or what a 'gun launcher' is but if its something that doesn't eject cases 600rpm is a fine number. Even with cases you can cite sci-fi material science to achieve that number.

Considering it's large size I can accept the rapid automation of a tank crew, but how the hell is it going to stay where it was shooting these heavy rounds so quickly, by the time it gets to battle it's back at base because the opposite reaction of the recoil on something with no ground to steady itself will push it back a lot.

>Gives the titan advance technology while claiming the tank gets nothing.

Dont be retarded man. Give the two sides the same level of technology otherwise the entire discussion is not even worth looking at.

Any advance technology that goes on one should be put on the other. In this situation the tank will likely win due to stated here being able to have more armor (the natural design of a mech limits armor amount where a tank wont have as much issue) and slopped armor to give it an extra edge.

Tanks are easier to hide and make cover for giving them the advantage in laying an ambush.

A disabling shot on the leg will defeat a Mech. A disabling shot on a tank that is anywhere but the gun just prevents it from moving, but that still fight 100% effectively.

Any advance technology on a mech like shields would logically go on the tank also

Gee Bill, TWO Autocannons? What's the point of having them rotate with the main turret if they aren't even coaxial? It doesn't look like they can traverse in their mounting so they're almost as terrible as the Bow Machineguns on the M3 Lee

>>381971278
Even with an autoloading mechanism, the turret looks incredibly cramped and like there isn't enough room for both the mechanism and the gun recoil. Unless the breech is using unknown space magic I still can't figure out what the fuck I'm looking at.

It's kinda hard since tanks are very rarely seen, if ever at all, in the Titanfall universe. Even then, a Titan would still win for several reason;

- Titans are still extremely durable and can perform immediate hull repairs, so in the case of a joint shot, they are not disabled, although that is a very real possibility to happen.

- Titans don't just drop and die, they take heavy abuse, in the campaign your Titan could function with just a shredded chassis and arm, and also functioned with one arm completely ripped off and heavy damage from a previous fight.

- Titans can run pretty quickly, can dash, and are very nimble, a Stryder chassis can probably run up on the tank and soak up the hits with the shield, then proceed to mulch it like I said before. They were originally built for construction so they're also very strong, and picking up a tank and cracking it open like some crab legs is not a problem.

- Titans can spot things very easily because they're robots, but even then, there's also Threat Vision; things are filled in red when detected, which I'd imagine the tank would come up on even with the camo, and Sonar pulse, which would outline the tank or at least the crew inside. They can perform large range scans even at low power, so unless you were 100% off the grid, you'd probably be picked up on that as well.

-Factoring in Titans kits, Scorch is heavily armored and can just flame out your tank from it's position, Ronin can phase in and out of dimensions and send out waves of disabling electricity, Tone can put up one way particle walls, Northstar can fly over the tank, and pierce it with the Railgun, Ion can catch the tank shells in a vortex and send them right back, etc.

- The pilot can get out and disable the tank itself, which would be pretty easy considering the training pilots go through in lore. The Titan can still send information or act autonomously to assist as well.

>>
>>381971674
Again, keep the technology the same for both sides. This means
>1
Tanks are also extremely durable and perform hull repairs. Except, due to tank design, it would be even more durable because it can fit more armor AND make it slopped. And if you blow of the leg, something far more likely to happen then out right destroying it, it will collapse because it cant move on one leg and will be unable to fight correctly. Though better then normal mechs, still not as well as a tank.

>2
Blow of a leg it collapses. Its called phsyics.

>3
Ya it is more mobile then a tank but not so mobile you cant hit it.

>4
Which isnt active 24/7 it needs to be activated. The low profile of the tank allows it to ambush the Titan that doesnt know it is there.

>5 Oh yes there are some great kits. But a tank can engage several of them at farther range. The Tone would have trouble penetrating a tank with its gun (ONLY a 40mm), All the special abilites like the phase in and shields have a limited life. Only the Northstar would be effective and the flying of the Northstar isnt all that effective. In fact I love it when NS fly, easier to hit and kill.

>6
Ya a Pilot can disable a tank, but it is far easier for him to disable a titan.

Titans are excellent mechs but at the end of the day, a tank is more survivable, harder to hit (small size, Titans are piss easy to hit), better at laying ambushes, and a stronger main gun compared to a more maneuverable mech.

Not to mention tanks would like be easier to produce and a hell of a lot more reliable.

>>381972621
>try hitting something that can run towards you zig-zaging at this speed
Have you ever heard a computer controlled fire system? You know tank can shoot down helicopters if their flying low enough right? Lets also ignore that the mech should not be able to stop without falling over when running that fast. Clearly this universe has more lax laws of physics which also works just as well for the tank.
>See >>381963787
What? I seriously still don't understand your point.
>Also, given the fact that anything with legs has more agility when changing directions than a tank
By what metric? Why can't this future sci-fi tank with future sci-fi super materials change directions fast? Why cant you put rocket boosters on the tank?

>Durability
Nothing is going to survive a Titan ripping it open whether it be another Titan, a tank, a building, etc. Shields are basically trophy systems, and won't work on physical attacks like a hit (I believe a Titan punch instantly removes shields but I'm not sure) and you can execute Titans through shields.

>Resilience
Like you said, tanks are already resilient.

>Speed
Depends on the Titan, but a Street or Altas (light and medium) can run pretty fast, I'd estimate 30mph? There are no moving ground vehicles in the game so I can't say how fast they'd be, although I imagine a tank would be at 30mph still. Titans are much more variable than tanks, considering they can climb, get up, and stuff, while you won't find a tank that can scale a mountain or flip back over.

- Detection
Moot point, I only brought this up because the tank is camoflagued. You'd probably hear the Titan coming in any case.

- Specialties
Titans are purpose built, Scorch can dispense tons of thermite from it's hands and arms and has a Thermite launcher that's probably larger than a tank. It can also launch canisters of Thermite that are the size of a Smart Car or whatever those pussy things are, which I don't think a tank can accomodate easily.

Phasing large objects seems to be hard because Ronin's phase doesn't last long, but the thing with it is he's in a different dimension, so he can run where past where you would've been and literally teleports behind you. A tank can probably be equipped with that, but the problem is it's not moving anywhere and you seemingly can't stay in Phase forever. You also can't interact with things in the Upside Down, so you can't time Ronin and mulch him by switching.

Like I said, the Titans coming to rip you open, especially if you're heavily armored, so the wall won't do you much good, but it will protect the Titans joints if it needs to pause.

Get a flying tank that can aim 360°, good luck.

Vortex shield, Titan attacks physically.

A tank with whatever reactor a titan uses and super materials should be able to hit triple digits easy peasy

Why cant the tank mount thermite launchers.
>that's probably larger than a tank
I assume the theoretical tank is the same weight class as the mech.

>Get a flying tank that can aim 360°, good luck.
Why does it need to aim below itself, what tactical advantage is gained from flying above the head high of the mech. If you really wanted to you could mount a rack of missile on the bottom.

>Like I said, the Titans coming to rip you open
Why doesn't the tank shoot it while backing away or just ram it. If you really wanted to you could mount some form of melee weapon on the tank.

No, we're considering a future where both tanks and mechs can exist, and mechs have stabilizing systems that prevent them from falling over because overlooking an issue this big when designing one is retarded in the first place, much like yourself.

Flying mechs. Flying mechs that can go above the maximum vertical lift of a tanks turret and bomb it to hell from above. It has both air superiority and ground/territory control capabilities.
>Why cant you put rocket boosters on the tank?
Because then you might as well get a helicopter, which sure as hell beats a tank. Also good luck stabilizing a shit with computer controlled firing system on a big-ass block of metal floating in the air.

Its literally a universe with functioning battlefield level artificial intelligence.
>Video games aren't real life kid. Those are AA armored vehicles, not MBTs.
Its technically possible irl and a supersonic shell guided by an AI system could do it easy.
>physics
Based on that webm the mech would be able to stop almost instantly but it would have to slowly decelerate.
>Because then you might as well get a helicopter, which sure as hell beats a tank. Also good luck stabilizing a shit with computer controlled firing system on a big-ass block of metal floating in the air.
Why isnt this a problem the mech has, what makes the humanoid form such a good flying vehicle.
