>>
>>381933621
The controls aren't dogshit, they are amazing once you get used to them

Most people who say the controls are bad literally started the game, played for 1 minute and quit without even trying to get used to the controls

And it's hard because the combat is extremely punishing and you will get raped by everything at the beginning

Forget about using the mouse, it's all in the CTRL and arrow keys.
It's a great game after at least half a dozen hours.
>>
>>381931452
The devs were pretty big fans of Monkey Island and other similar point and clicks, and the writing/game design reflects that. Its basically what you would get if you applied the design philosophy of those games to a RPG. Really neat stuff and I think Khorinis is the best town ever designed in a RPG, period. You are literally retarded if you like RPGs and won't buy this for 2 dollary doos or whatever the fuck its selling for. Hell, even if you don't like RPGs, I'd say you should get it anyways, as some portions of the game are just a miracle of game design and should be experienced by anyone interested in vidya. Just apply the fan patch after download so it runs properly.

It really is as good as the people shilling say it is. I swear to fucking god. Just fucking play it. PLEASE.

Here's a breakdown for this shitty game to save your time.

pressing m1+q/e+m2+s being the only consistent strategy vs skilled humanoid movesets is shit design
the charm of the world and its characters get old after 10 minutes in the town
combat is horribly imbalanced and tedious you do like 5dmg per hit and then randomly do 100dmg because the chance to crit is based weapon skill % and the damage is based on both weapon+str and bypasses armor and all enemies have shit tons of armor/hp
you spend most of the game running away from mobs to break their tether and fight 1v1 because anymore than 1 mob and you will get raped unless you have good armor
you get 2-4 shot by everyone until you get the best armor in the game then you're literally invincible
orcs, one of the most common and dangerous endgame enemies, just charge at you 24/7 and can literally be controlled by moving your mouse or spamming Q/E
trolls, one of the biggest and seemingly most intimidating enemies, are the easiest enemies in the game and can be killed by anyone at lvl1
magic/bows are overpowered as fuck and trivialize everything

Gothic 2 NOTR is not a good or fun game.

>orcs, one of the most common and dangerous endgame enemies, just charge at you 24/7 and can literally be controlled by moving your mouse or spamming Q/E
Wrong, their attacks vary depending on your distance from them. Did you just watch someone else play the game on youtube?
>trolls, one of the biggest and seemingly most intimidating enemies, are the easiest enemies in the game and can be killed by anyone at lvl1
It's true that they are laughably easy, but you will be fighting them for half an hour if you try it at level 1
>magic/bows are overpowered as fuck and trivialize everything
magic is hardmode until way late game, nobody gives a fuck about bows
>>
I wanted to try a WRPG so I went with the Witcher. I dropped it near the end because I found it too boring. Is Gothic 2 better?
I prefer games focused on gameplay, where it's up to you to progress through the game instead of just reading text boxes. It doesn't matter if they're shooters, turn based RPGs or beat-em-ups.

Can any of the music in Gothic match the impact of moments like these? Having played both, I'd say that Gothic's OST is nicely atmospheric, but also doesn't connect with me as well as Ultima does.
>>
>not divine divinity
>>
>>381938073
>I wanted to try a WRPG so I went with the Witcher. I dropped it near the end because I found it too boring. Is Gothic 2 better?
I fucking hate Witcher and I love Gothic.
>I prefer games focused on gameplay
Combat is reasonably challenging, extremely challenging if you don't build your character right. Its pretty unique and different enemies require different strategies. The real appeal is unraveling and understanding an extremely detailed game world, though, which can be gameplay in and of itself.
>where it's up to you to progress
'Progress' in this game is kraut autism to an extreme. Whether you plan to or not, you're going to find yourself genociding every living thing out in the wild. Nothing respawns and progression is solely blocked by your character's ability to survive and deal damage. You will even kill herds of sheep behind a farmer's back for miniscule bumps to your experience. You will pick EVERYTHING up, inventory is limitless. Your inventory will be overflowing with shit by the end of the game.
>instead of just reading text boxes
Everything is voice acted and even the most unimportant characters are pretty interesting and as you talk to everyone you will slowly piece together what is going on in the world. It's a very immersive and captivating game. There is a lot of weird shit going on and you will really want to figure out what the hell is happening.

I'll try to convince you in another way than people have tried. You know how in most rpgs you choose your class at the beginning.
Here you choosing your class is a huge portion of the game.
Wanna be a firemage? Well you better join the fire temple and work your way up as a novice and learn all the arts before you get your first fire magic rune.
You wanna be a paladin? Well you better join the city's militia and never break the law, so that you can actually have a shot at it.
You wanna be a thief? Well it's more a sub class, but still you'll have to find their hideout yourself and convince them that you are no thread and are actually on their side.
The world just seems real to put it simple. Let's say you get into a dispute with someone, this might affect an entirely different quest later on, when it turns out you fucked with some one you need something of.

No, you will meet characters from 1, but there are dialogue options to say you have amnesia or simply don't remember them. Some nostalgia bait will go over your head, but it's not that big of a deal. Gothic 1 is really rough around the edges and not even close to Gothic 2 in terms of quality, so up to you.
>>
>>381942723
Just play it for like half an hour dude. If you have time to shitpost you have time to play video games.
>>
>>381942426
Not really, but you do get a lot of added fun if you had played it. Also in my humble opinion 1 is better in every aspect than 2 except controls and graphics.
>>
don't worry i just bought it and it can sit forever in my backlog
>>
>>381942426

Read this. >>381943193

But know, that a lot of the amnesia dialogue options lead to exposition. In the starting area there is a character that pretty much will summarize the plot of the first game if you ask him to.
>>
>>381934208
subhuman tier.

I mean maybe not that bad, it's kinda like Skyrim to Morrowind - it lost all its character
>>
Why Should I buy it on Steam, I've got the cd.
Night of the Raven included
>>
>Doesn't even have windowed mode
Dropped.
>>
>>381943952
But if you ask for amnesia expositions you can't ask the "So what's up?" "What is X doing nowadays?" "Have you seen Y?" dialog bits afterwards. It also completely ruins the joy of seeing these characters again.

But I might be biased, because I mostly agree with >>381943627.

To be fair, I played 2 first. So Diego and all this people were nobodies to me and I still had fun and understood the basic plot of Gothic 1. Goes to show, how much piranha bytes cared to make the ride enjoyable for everyone.

>>

Adulthood is realizing 3 is superior
>>
>>381945504
Yeah I played through it. In hindsight I maybe didn't enjoy it to its fullest bc I knew the story from what I gathered in 2. So I guess skipping 1 if you want to play 2, will make 1 less enjoyable if you decide to play it later.
Still the game was beautiful, even though I disliked the ore trading instead of simple gold. And the quests in 2 were better.
>>
>>381945624
Make room for it then??? You have literally no excuse. You either haven't played it, or have shit taste. Which one is it?

I really rarely get triggered but admn if you aren't trying hard
>>
>>381945739
hahahaha no

Gothic 3 is literally unplayable without a several GB big fan patch. Not even the steam version, bc they are not allowed to include the fan patch.
And even after the patch the game runs like crap. While framerates are okay, the game will hick up every 2 minutes and stop for half a second. There are millions of glitches. The game was just released waaay to early desu. Could have been good. But at least we have Risen 1.
>>
>>381945837
>I disliked the ore trading instead of simple gold

Well I actually don't even remember how the ore trading worked, I just remember I was annoyed by it.

I remember it being annoying to get the ore of vendors. You had to hold a button and it would be thrown into the trading grid. Then you had to match it's value with your own stuff.

In Gothic 2 things just have a price and you often get gold for tasks, so you aren't usually trying to get all the gold a vendor has. Instead you are wasting your gold on said vendors.

But I don't know I don't really remember much of the trading in G1. It's been to long. I only remember that I did not like it for whatever reason.
>>
>>381946718

The thing that sold me on Gothic 2 was its first quest.

Slight spoilers ahead, but this is the gist:

You arrive at a town, wearing basically old rags, so the guards won't let you in. You have several options to get in, none of them are directly pointed out to you.

>There is a farm nearby. The farmer offers to sell you proper clothes with money that you get by working on his farm for a bit. With the clothes, you can pretend like you are an apprentice of some of the masters in town.
>Alternatively, you can sneak into the farmer's house, figure out how to pick locks and steal the clothes from his chest. The farmer may or may not find out.
>A nearby guy tells you that the guards are not very smart, and you can pretend you work for the local alchemist if you picked up a lot of herbs and show them to the guards.
>A merchant standing at the side of the road offers you a deal to get you into town. He will give you a license, but you will owe him a favour. You however do not know what that favour is supposed to be.
>You can also find a sequence break to basically sneak into town. This will actually reward you with some extra EXP, but it is difficult to do for new players.

None of those are particularly deep or complex, it is supposed to be an introduction into the quest design in Gothic 2. And, like I said, none of this is pointed out to you, so you are left to figure it out on your own.
>>
>>381946768
Honestly that farm house of Lobart is the best vertical slize of a game I've ever seen. It teaches you everything you need to know about the game. It teaches you how to buy, sell things, that you can either work hard and succeed or that you can simply be a thief, which might get you killed.
>>
>>381947041
Maybe you're misunderstanding the word comfy.
>>
>>381947378
It's not a sequence break if it's intended. The sequence break is just climbing the walls of the city. Risen has a similar part to get out of the city,
>>
>>381947398

>After this brief introduction, Xardas would teleport the protagonist near the Old Camp, which would bring him to the first major novelty – at his destination the hero was to stumble upon Thora, a staff-wielding scout serving king Rhobar II.
>Player’s offensive capabilities would be expanded with the ability to wield a battle staff, courtesy of the aforementioned Thora. Her 3D model (as well as the staffs) also appeared in Gothic II… in the sex scene with Nadia in the Red Lantern brothel.

>introduce the first (and only) female main character of the series
>scrap her role and recycle the model for a brothel sex scene

>>
>>381948072
your point exactly?

Cause I like both games pretty much the same
>>
>>381947754
There is a community patch that makes it run perfectly fine on modern systems. I'd be surprised if it wasn't posted already in this thread.

>>381947701
Eh, I used "sequence break" for lack of a better word.

And yeah, the Harbour City in Risen was almost as good as Khorinis, but I didn't like that you were forced to stay in for quite some time. It made Risen as a whole feel much more sequenced than Gothic. In Khorinis, you were likely to stay a long time there aswell, but if you didn't want to you were free to leave at any time, and some quests even required you to leave town.

Anyway, a question I'd like to ask, which game from the two Piranha Byte trilogies do you guys think have the best magic system. I think Risen's try to ballance Gothic's magic system with the crystal magic was a noble attempt, but at the same time it cut out some of the exciting stuff like death waves or ice blocks, without ptoviding a smoother difficulty curve for mages. So it was the same grindy early game, without the brokingly awesome end game. I'm a bit torn on the subject.
>>
>>381948374
Probably he means to say that morrowind does not have real cities. It's just prebuilt portions copy and pasted.
>>
>>381948560
I never was too much of a magic fan, so I can't answer. I'm the hunter/bow type.
>>
>>381948560
>And yeah, the Harbour City in Risen was almost as good as Khorinis,

Are you feeling ok nigger? Harbor city in Risen was one of the most bland and boring cities ever.

It is nothing like Khorinis
>>
>>381948635
I don't know if that's what he meant, I thought this was about Morrowind's barebones NPCs. They just stand in one place or walk the same patrol route day and night forever, and fail to react to anything, even if it's the entire wildlife population of the island running amok right next to them.
>>
>>381933570
I'll never understand this spy meme with windows 10. You think they can't spy on you with any windows version? You think you can't be spied on even though you're connected to the internet? You'd have to be one of those paranoid tards with 10 proxies and 5 firewalls and other trash to think you're not being watched and the only reason to do any of that is to download kiddy porn like a sicko.
>>
>>381948635
Ok, that does make sense. But I'd go further - I think Gothic 1's all camps are better cities that anything in TES ever made.
>>
>>381948927
Yeah, you are right. I only watched the first video. The other 2 vids are about the NPCs that feel far more real than the ones in Morrowind.

In an alternate universe piranha bytes is an american studio. And Gothic games are still being made and loved by everyone instead of being a niche thing, mostly germans like.
>>
>>381948814
>harbor city doesn't want to allow you in
>ha ha I remember this part
>go down to the shore and walk into the water
>giant sea worm cutscene triggered because the game has no swimming

Well then.
>>
>>381948814
I am a different Nigger. I thought Harbour City in Risen was okay. Not Khorinis, but preddy gut nonetheless.
>>
>>381947378
Sequence breaking was patched to not give exp in NOTR I think, but you can swim, which is the hardest way by far, but it does give the most experience and special dialogue.
>>
>>381948754
I never played a ranged character in a PB game. Bows always seemed to lack a certain punch to me, so I usually ditched them early on. I might give them another try in my next playthrough in a year or so.

I am still kinda rustled that the fire bow and magic crossbow had so little ammunation that they weren't worth using, even if there is a simple glitch to get more of it. It is too grindy to be enjoyable to use in-game though.

>>381948814
Well, maybe "almost as good as Khorinis" was an overstatement, but I think it had similar quest philosophy and openness, and the characters felt pretty "real" to me, compared to many other RPGs. What do you dislike about it so much?

>>381949164
I think the Gothic games were popular in Eastern Europe aswell. Apparently, the guys from CD Project Red were big fans.

Also, PB was mostly fucked over by publishers more than anything. If they had a decent publisher, they would not need to be American.
>>
>>381949164
>>381948927

yeah but NPC's are all TES problem. Also polish reporting here - must say we had really really good dubbing compared to the english one I'm hearing in these >>381948072
videos. Maybe that's one more reason why the series is so loved in our country.

>>
>>381950375
It is a piece of dialogue from Gothic 2 where the main character tries to, unsuccesfully, provoke another character into attacking him. You should really play the game, it is great.
>>
>>381932054
We are just talking about it. Maybe you should stop using IGN as a comparison for "talking about X".
>>
>>381950565
Lol, what? I must have forgotten about that line. It's been years since last I played the game.

English dubbing is a thing of beauty. Just listen to this:

And English Yberion makes Swamp Camp sound like fucking Jonestown. Which is actually kind of cool, in a way.

>>
>>381951091
It wasn't that bad. A little bland and boring, but could be worse.
>>
>>381951091
The entire final area did not exactly play to the game's strengths. But it was fun for an overpowered wizard, I suppose.

>>381951080

>>381923193

>>
>>381951498
Gothic 3 is to Gothic 2 what Mass Effect Andromeda is to Gothic 2.
>>
>>381951492
Yeah the endings of both games suck and yet you can't but love the game. Not for their endings, but for everything that lead up to the end.
>>
>>381951498
mfw when I have a friend that actually believes that.

He wanted to borrow The Force Unleashed 2 and I told him I'd rather lend him The Force Unleashed 1 bc 2 is incredibly bad. He insisted on playing 2 and then gave the game back to me a week later and told me the game series sucks.
>>
>>381923193
>game where you go around killing dinosaurs in a medieval setting
wtf were they thinking?
>>
>>381932054
2002 pc exclusive.
>>
>>381951669
I think the ending of Gothic 1 was better, it is the fact that just before the end you kinda have to backtrack through half the game just to pick up some item. The final boss being somewhat of a puzzle fight seems much more fitting for Gothic though.

Atleast it wasn't the final boss of Risen. Fuck introducing new mechanics with on-screen prompts in the second you need to dodge them. It would have been fine if the previous dungeons had puzzles with disappearing flour or reflecting projectiles leading up to the boss fight, but the way it is, it just overshoots the goal of fixing the Gothic problem of having to fight a huge final boss with an unsuiting combat system.

>>381951904
They never felt out of place to me. Dragons exist in those games, so why not smaller dragons?
>>
>>381951669
Well, the "ending" of Gothic 2 was fucking great though:

They probably do not feel out of place, bc they don't act like dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, but rather like animals we are familiar with. They are not too different from the wolfs for an example and they mind their own business, unless you get too near.

dragons were a myth in the middle ages.
>>
>there is an official addon for Gothic 3 released years after the game's initial release, made by an indian developer
That is some weird trivia.

>>381952340
Gothic 1 has some strange controls (interacting with something is arrow up + Ctrl, for example), but it is absolutely worth it to play Gothic 1 before Gothic 2 because of the pay-off of meeting old characters again and getting to old locations and seeing how they changed (don't worry, G2's map is entirely a new map, but you will get some "nostalgic" moments.)

Also, I would recommend not starting your first Gothic 2 playthrough with the NotR addon. I think it makes the game too hard.

My recommended order is:
>play Gothic 1
>play Gothic 2 vanilla
>wait like half a year and play some other stuff to keep you busy
>replay Gothic 2, this time with Night of the Raven
>don't play Gothic 3
>give Risen 1 a shot if you got the itch

Personally haven't played the rest of the Risen series, 2 is supposed to be garbage while 3 is supposed to be decent.

>>
>>381953070
Because it doesn't just add new content, it reballances a bunch of stuff, and changes some quests a bit. NotR is integrated into the main story, and not some optional side content.

It's not that fucking hard jesus christ

I played Gothic 2 with NoTR for the first time last year without having played Gothic 1 first and I managed to finish it

basically you just have to remember to minmax and you're good
>>
>>381953061
I got this for free. Do I still need to ask Gabe to remove it? Is it that bad?
>>
>>381937947
It does. I am playing it right now on win 7. There are patches galore online if you have trouble running the default version which should have them included.
>>
>>381952340
Avoid the goblins. Don't think a stick is a weapon.
>>
>>381953331
Not all people have it in them to minmax, especially in an RPG that doesn't seem immediately minmax demanding. You'll be taking out regular starting enemies just fine with what you've got, it's after you actually get past the tutorial section when things will immediately switch from "Hey, those young wolves are not too bad" to "Holy fucking shit, these bandits are raping me, help."
>>
>>381941865
I did try it and its fucking awful, took me forever to get it to run and then I got to the first town and became a fucking member of the guard in not even 2 quests

gz maybe because you're skilled.
>>
>>381948985
You only need one firewall.
>>
>>381948985
There's a difference between having a backdoor and installing OS that refuses you even the basic user control such whether to have updates or not. Or refuses to let you uninstall them. And no, fuck off with your "But updates are mandatory, the security!" memes, most windows 10 updates introduced more bugs than they fixed and the security holes actually came with them which then required additional updates deployed to plug them. Windows defender is trash and if you're not using your own firewall/antivirus, no amount of goy updates will save you.
>>
>>381954314
>being this paranoid

I consciously choose not to give two shits about it. If ever 10 becomes unusable I even might switch to Linux, as for now it functions well, I really haven't any real problems with viruses for quite some time and if I did I'd just straight up format the shit out of my hdd which is really zero problem if you're not a massive hoarder.
>>
Gothic 1 would be a better game without the Sleeper.
>>
>>381955227
you mean as a narrative tool and a 'character' or as a final 'boss'?
>>
>>381955418
The former. The bossfight itself was fine, but the Sleeper becoming an actual character in the game instead of just something the brotherhood worships completely fucks up everything that originally made the game interesting.
>>
>>381923193
I've never played or looked at this game in any particular interest. Why is it praised so much ? Legitimate question, I'm not trying to bait.
>>
>>381954938
>I consciously choose not to give two shits about it.

You meant to say that you choose to be willfully ignorant and don't care about what your OS does.
>>
>>381955594
Never thought about it that way, I think I maybe get it. For a fantasy series Gothic is pretty low fantasy and realistic in a way so I'd have made sense for it to have some insane people worhipping some kinda of made up out of ass demon, but not really it becoming true, right?

>>
Post your ideas for a better boss and ending in Gothic 2 or Gothic 1
>>
>>381955934
But I kind of like handholding, anon. I'm not good at RPGs at all and get lost really easily so while I definitely don't like being taken for a retard, games which purposefully let you figure everything out for yourself often fall short of entertainment for me and just become frustrating.
>>
>>381956348
then go play Skyrim or The Witcher 3, don't bother with Gothic
>>
>>381955870
Well yeah, but the Sleeper existing is not my issue. The game has a great setting in the prison camp, and a great premise with the camp politics and conflicts. The whole divide on whether it's better to just live your life out in there instead of getting butchered in a shitty king's shitty war, the difference between being a nobody or someone on the top, the military clashes between the camps and the aggressive recruiting of workers, the restricted zones, these things were fantastic, and also pretty unique to boot.

And then suddenly all of this stops mattering because lol a giant archdemon bug is going to eat us all.
>>
>>381956823

>And then suddenly all of this stops mattering because lol a giant archdemon bug is going to eat us all.

And you're saying that is not the awesome part about the story? The intriguing backstory and then the weird fucking happening?
>>
>>381955934
>I recommend you watch this instead even tho its long
>spoils a ton of shit

No.
>>
>>381923193
Get it on GOG so it actually runs.
>>
>>381956823
So I didn't quite understand you, but I do now and you pretty much listed all the things that made 1 so special and in my opinion a better and more interesting game than 2 (maybe not mechanically wise). Gothic 2 was great for me as I'd been the fan of first one already, but the story was a lot more run of the mill
>>
for $2 more i can get all 3 games
are the others good as well or was 2 the shining gem in the turd pile
>>
>>381957369
I'm team 1. But both are great. The third one kinda doesn't exist in my world.
>>
>>381957008
Eh. I don't like that it forces the story to go in a very specific direction where the factions not only stop mattering but in a matter of hours stop existing, period.

The summoning itself was funny, but since you don't actually feel the effects of the Sleeper's awakening until you go and kill it, the moment is kind of wasted.

Personally I would have loved to blow up that ore mound. I can't forgive PB for denying me this one.
>>
>>381956258
The better question is, how should have Gothic 3's story gone?
>>
>>381923193
Gothic series is shit, I'd rather play morrowind.
